I heard Schlereth talking about Haynesworth this morning on Mike and Mike, and he was going OFF on Haynesworth. While he said that the Redskins should have known better than to sign a guy who takes 4 out of every 7 plays off to such a huge contract, Albert is 100% to blame for this situation. (Not a point I personally agree with) Obviously, Schlereth played for Shanahan for years and that will probably cloud his opinion, but he did make one interesting point.
He said that even in a 3-4, when you go into a nickel package you are basically running a 4-3 and that Haynesworth would have had 20-25 snaps a game to do what he liked to do if he had just gotten on board, and that he was either too stupid or too selfish to realize it.
I don't know about the specifics of various schemes to know how accurate that is, but I did find it interesting in light of the arguments presented in some of the threads here in Albert's defense. Perhaps those with playing experience (Ryman) could comment?
the fact is that almost every team runs a 4 man front against multiple receiver packages this is true (and overlooked by people who say the 3-4 is better against the pass) but Schlereth is an Olineman who obviously doesnt get it. most 3-4 teams run their base formations on first and second down, then on soem second and most thirds they move to a nickel or dime (depending on their dbs). the thing Schlereth doesnt get is actually pretty simple...
A Nt gets so worn down during the first and second downs on runs and fighting doubles on pass plays that very few of them even play on passing downs, Hampton gets pulled a lot on passing downs, so does wilfork, the only nose tackle who doesnt that I am aware of is Ngata, and he plays a lot of DE as well as Nose. the reason 3-4 nosetackles are rarely a pass rush threat is that in addition to being massive men (they need to be mainly to do their job) they expend massive amounts of energy on every single play, for instance, a 3tech expends less energy shooting the gap and attacking upfield for 7 seconds than a nose would pushing two Olinemen on a double team for the same amount of time. so those 25 snaps of playing 3 tech in the nickel suddenly become 5-6 snaps a game or he is too worn out to do anything.
When nose gets sacks they are almost always because a QB is forced up in the pocket by the outside rush.
3 techs get doubled as well but more often its the Guard and Fullback which anyone could tell you is a hell of a lot easier than a Center/guard (unless its rabach) lol
Its disturbing to me when professional football players dont understand the basics of football, I can understand when a fan doesnt get a nuance, but when someone gets paid, they should get it. what I would ask Schlereth is how well he thinks he would have played left tackle, even though his era was the first era when Olinemen started to understand the different roles were not interchangable.
now the question about redskins greats has come up as I knew it would, and heres the issue,
Dexter Manley- selfish, not very smart drug addled most of the time, yet Gibbs managed to find a way to get production from him.
Haynesworth- selfish, not very smart, Shannahan has effectively wasted him.
