Wow. RT @davidcanter: What're odds I go 2 bar in Ft Lauderdale & 1st person I see is Haynesworth. Suspension must bother him. Not!

Oh, I am sure I would be quietly enjoying myself, but I also would consider trying to project an illusion of dedication and hard work, so there would be a next team for me.

I heard Schlereth talking about Haynesworth this morning on Mike and Mike, and he was going OFF on Haynesworth. While he said that the Redskins should have known better than to sign a guy who takes 4 out of every 7 plays off to such a huge contract, Albert is 100% to blame for this situation. (Not a point I personally agree with) Obviously, Schlereth played for Shanahan for years and that will probably cloud his opinion, but he did make one interesting point.

He said that even in a 3-4, when you go into a nickel package you are basically running a 4-3 and that Haynesworth would have had 20-25 snaps a game to do what he liked to do if he had just gotten on board, and that he was either too stupid or too selfish to realize it.

I don't know about the specifics of various schemes to know how accurate that is, but I did find it interesting in light of the arguments presented in some of the threads here in Albert's defense. Perhaps those with playing experience (Ryman) could comment?

In the games he *DID* play in, he got around 25-29 snaps a game, so it seems like Schlereth is correct.

The Skins also run a 4-man front quite often, including (as a few of us have mentioned) when the Skins absolutely needed a stop, and 76 year-old Brett Favre ran for a first down on us. Oh, and all-universe Albert "the greatest" Haynesworth was in the game. :)

the fact is that almost every team runs a 4 man front against multiple receiver packages this is true (and overlooked by people who say the 3-4 is better against the pass) but Schlereth is an Olineman who obviously doesnt get it. most 3-4 teams run their base formations on first and second down, then on soem second and most thirds they move to a nickel or dime (depending on their dbs). the thing Schlereth doesnt get is actually pretty simple...

A Nt gets so worn down during the first and second downs on runs and fighting doubles on pass plays that very few of them even play on passing downs, Hampton gets pulled a lot on passing downs, so does wilfork, the only nose tackle who doesnt that I am aware of is Ngata, and he plays a lot of DE as well as Nose. the reason 3-4 nosetackles are rarely a pass rush threat is that in addition to being massive men (they need to be mainly to do their job) they expend massive amounts of energy on every single play, for instance, a 3tech expends less energy shooting the gap and attacking upfield for 7 seconds than a nose would pushing two Olinemen on a double team for the same amount of time. so those 25 snaps of playing 3 tech in the nickel suddenly become 5-6 snaps a game or he is too worn out to do anything.

When nose gets sacks they are almost always because a QB is forced up in the pocket by the outside rush.

3 techs get doubled as well but more often its the Guard and Fullback which anyone could tell you is a hell of a lot easier than a Center/guard (unless its rabach) lol

Its disturbing to me when professional football players dont understand the basics of football, I can understand when a fan doesnt get a nuance, but when someone gets paid, they should get it. what I would ask Schlereth is how well he thinks he would have played left tackle, even though his era was the first era when Olinemen started to understand the different roles were not interchangable.

now the question about redskins greats has come up as I knew it would, and heres the issue,

Dexter Manley- selfish, not very smart drug addled most of the time, yet Gibbs managed to find a way to get production from him.

Haynesworth- selfish, not very smart, Shannahan has effectively wasted him.

Apparently, he could get caught torturing and killing dogs, and still have a next team.

I just hope we can get a 7th rounder for him. Anything better would be like hitting the lotto.

as soon as Albert is available he will have other teams trying to grab him, but I doubt anyone will pony up picks unless they understand that its almost a given that he ends up back in tenn or with the lions with schwartz.

absolutely correct,

about the favre run, I love when people bring that up, now quick without google, tell us who the other 3 linemen were in the front four and who was on the field at linebacker?

also where did he run to?

Ryman,

Manley had a high motor. Haynesworth, not so much.

For the record, I am 95% ticked off at the Redskins and about 5% at Haynesworth. But most of my anger towards the Redskins is due to the fact that he was brought here in the first place.

I also heard the possibility exists that the only reason Haynesworth wasn't simply cut or traded earlier is because the Redskins were trying to figure out a way to get some bonus money back. If that's true, THAT is far worse than any schematic mistakes our new coach may have made. Placing the almighty dollar ahead of the team ... if we passed on a mid-round pick because of that ... just thinking about it makes smoke come out of my ears. I really really hope that's not true.

I hate you so much right now, with a deep and unabiding hatred that is normally reserved for cowpies fans and people who dont turn their cell phone off during movies lmao.
You love me.

All people love me.

Animals wish they could talk so they could have a conversation with me.

Laughter, is a necessary nutrient.

Do the other 3 linemen matter? We had Albert "Greatest 4-3 DT ever in the history of football and sport itself" Haynesworth on the field!

Henry,
I normally agree with a lot of what you say because you rarely say stiff without thinking about it and it shows, but on haynesworth you are wrong about his motor.

is he selfish in the extreme? yes. did he refuse to play a position that he was told to? yes. would he sometimes take a knee because he was out of breath ? yes.

now look at his style at 6-5 and at times over 340 pounds, he still made piles of tackles and pursuit plays. his problem was not that he wasnt going full tilt it was that often after chasing a play for 30 yards (something that few Dt's do) he would often be worn out for a play or two. if you go back and watch film , you will see that even when he wasnt making tackles he was often right near the ball when the tackle was made. now whether he did that because he was stats conscious or because he was trying to win doesnt matter, the fact is he was a high motor player who was making tacking plays all over the place. I was laughing this year against the bears early on when one of the announcers made a comment about Albert being overrated about 2 plays before he used the guard to tackle the QB.

I think there are valid criticisms of AH , that he is brutal at PR, he is selfish and immature, he took a long time to get his cardio where it needed to be, and he tends to gamble too much, he is mercurial. BUT I have never seen a problem with his effort on important downs, his play against the run when allowed to play to his strength or his pass rush ability. Too many people buy in to this crap about how he layed down against the eagles, look at him ffs he even looks like hes cramping up he wasnt just laying down. or how he takes 4 out of 7 plays off? cmon man, you dont play more snaps than any other dt in the keague by taking plays off.

I think the skins are at fault because not only did they bring him here? but then they didnt do what was needed to get him happy and on board, some people think he would have been crabby no matter what, but we will never know.

So you don't go for the "it's-the-principle-of-the-thing" argument? I'm asking to be clear, your post was a little ambivalent.

I have to agree with you completely on this one. There is the retributive feel to getting your money back that feels like we're getting some measure of revenge on the spoiled rich athlete. It kinda feels good for a second until you process through it, then it should sink in how dumb that is.

I too hope that was not the case.

Ryman, I think you are personalizing this argument a bit too much because you played this position. Nobody is attacking all DTs for not playing like nimble little slot WRs or anything. Haynesworth has a specific reputation for taking plays off. I didn't invent that. And Manley never had that reputation. I didn't invent that either.

As much as I respect your opinion as a former player, I also have to respect the opinions of other former and current players and coaches who have observed this guy over the years. And as someone who has never played the game at that level, I can only base my opinion on that and my observations as a fan.

It's not that I haven't thought this or that through. It's that my perspective is different than yours. And as much as I've appreciated your take in this thread, it is possible that your opinion is as clouded as those with whom you disagree, though perhaps for different reasons.

I remember hearing a few weeks back that we were offered a 4th rounder for Haynesworth and thinking we should have taken that and run. Especially considering that Moss went for a 3rd. At the time I thought we turned it down because we thought we could milk it for a better offer. But now, if we turned down a chance to get something and didn't because 'of the principle of the thing' I will be furious. If we were truly concerned about principles we would have made him inactive for the entire season.

Hasn't this been the danny's attitude towards the fans for eleven years now?
