The 2025 Draft Thread

Yeah I did not want anything to do with Haskins and I really liked Sweat, Brian Burns, Dexter Lawrence and Darnell Savage. I felt the Sweat trade was very worthy and always liked him, although I know there are many that didn't like the trade.

The OL and CB rooms are significantly upgraded from 2024, those were to me clear weak spots on this team in recent seasons.

On the DL the killer weakness was not rushing the passer but stopping the run.

The players we acquired from Wise to Goldman to Kinlaw Peters believes are players that solidify the rush defense so Barkley is not a candidate to get to 175-200 yards on us in 2025.

We also improved at WR where last year we had waiver wire pickups being asked to get on the field before they learned the playbook.

I have my doubts about McCaffrey but think the additions of Samuel and Lane will expand what we can do on that side of the ball.

Still interested in seeing what Magee and Medrano bring to the LB corps.

Agree, O line and CB look stronger. I think WR, too.

D line, Edge, Safety, RB ?????

I don't know about the D line changes. I lean towards trusting Peters on it. But at the same time, I get the counter argument on it even as to stopping the run. It's definitely a bit of a Peters against PFF drill on some of these moves. And you can argue versus some in the league, too.

Kinlaw and Goldman have atrocious PFF scores as to stopping the run. Wise is below average PFF score against the run. Wise and Goldman were had for a ham sandwich. Meaning there wasn't a big demand for either player. And the Kinlaw signing was perhaps more lampooned than any other FA signing this off seasons. And don't get me wrong, i am not betting against Peters. I'll trust him. It's simply that I am aware that on some metrics and narratives Peters didn't fix the run stopping ability of this D line. Keim sort of sums it well when talking about Wise, saying depending on who he talks to some around the league think Wise is good at setting the age, and some think he doesn't do well at it.

Not saying PFF is the be all and end all. But its tough for me to just dismiss both PFF scores AND said players being had on the cheap as nonfactors. I am still betting on Peters regardless, but in the back of my mind it wouldn't strike me wild if this D line was still not hot including against the run. Will see.

As to safety, I think they need to add some depth. Losing both Chinn and Forrest to me weakens the group. I like Croskey-Merritt but wonder how much value they are going to give a 7th rounder to usurp the starter.

I explain why I gave him an A in my previous post. As far as I am concerned getting an elite QB is worth three drafts of players even more. So am not judging him like the meaningless Ron, Jay, Scot, Bruce, Vinny, Shanny drafts where the defacto quest was how can we build the next 9-7, or 10-6 team. Peters has already made the point with a 12 win season. Lets say he missed on Jayden and the every other pick was perfect -- those successful picks wouldn't matter. Without an elite QB, you got almost no chance at a SB.

He won the lottery. I don't care about the other lotto tickets that failed in the process of winning the lottery.

But playing along with your point, I am not judging guys after season 1 and grading them. To me its all incomplete. Except for Jayden was showed elite ability immediately.

C plus? What draft do you think we've had in the last three decades that had more impact than this last one?
I dont disagree that he hit it big with the qb pick beyond our wildest imagination (and even his) but JD was an easy consensus pick that every other GM would have made on a QB needy team. (even a moron like Rivera) It was luck of the draw for Peters to come in to a bad team with a high pick, in a year that looks to be a historically great QB draft with a huge need at QB.
I am talking about the draft from a player evaluation standpoint beyond the softball pitch easy picks.
I also dont agree that you cant judge a player (drafted in the top 3 rds) after one season.. that BS is propagated by poor GMs. Good players find a way to get on the field year one (Terry as a 3rd pick was borderline great from the get go) If it takes a player 3-4 years to start contributing at a significant level he is basically a poor pick for the team that drafted him, because the whole point of the draft is to have a significant contributer/ level raiser on a cheap rookie contract. After year 4 you either lose him to another team or have to pay top of market money to retain him.. not such a deal anymore.

I have to give Lurrie credit for patience. Roseman has been hot in recent years. Red hot. It's helped Roseman to have all the learning pains over the years including some bad drafts that every GM experiences. I've watched several Roseman interviews this off season and he comes off somewhat humble about what he's learned and how he's evolved.

Next week, Howie Roseman will oversee his 14th draft as Eagles general manager, and the first 13 have ranged from brilliant to disastrous.

11) 2019: Miles Sanders salvages this draft. He wasn’t a superstar, but he had four productive years here and even made a Pro Bowl in 2022. But the rest of this draft was a disaster. Dillard started just nine games as an Eagle, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside caught just 16 passes as a 2nd-round pick, Shareef Miller played two career snaps and Clayton Thorson played none. Yikes.

1st round: Andre Dillard
2nd round: Miles Sanders, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside
4th round: Shareef Miller
5th round: Clayton Thorson

12) 2017: What lifts this draft over 2014 and out of the dreaded bottom spot? Barnett at least had 6 ½ functional seasons in an Eagles uniform, and he did Tom Brady fumble in the Super Bowl. If Barnett and Jordan Matthews are a push, Rasul Douglas nudges 2017 ahead of 2014. He didn’t really figure it all out until 2021 with the Packers, but he did have five interceptions in three seasons in Philly, started 18 games and earned a ring in 2017. Sidney Jones really drops this draft down though. It was a risky pick that didn’t pan out. Mack Hollins and Donnel Pumphrey in the fourth round doesn't help either.

1st round: Derek Barnett
2nd round: Sidney Jones
3rd round: Rasul Douglas
4th round: Mack Hollins, Donnel Pumphrey
5th round: Shelton Gibson, Nate Gerry
6th round: Elijah Qualls

13) 2014: Jordan Matthews had a few solid seasons before going to the Bills in the trade that brought the Eagles Ronald Darby, a starting corner on the Super Bowl team. He came back a couple times and even caught a touchdown in the playoff loss to the Saints in 2018. Other than that? Only Watkins and Allen were even still here in 2017 and both were deep backups. Smith only played about 400 snaps in three seasons. The entire draft class started only 88 games in an Eagles uniform.

1st round: Marcus Smith
2nd round: Jordan Matthews
3rd round: Josh Huff
4th round: Jaylen Watkins
5th round: Taylor Hart, Ed Reynolds
7th round: Beau Allen

Well, to be fair before bringing Roseman back for a second (and better) stint, Lurie did engage in the very Snyder-like behavior of giving entire organizational control to a gimmicky college coach in Chip Kelly.

So Lurie had some lessons to learn as well.

What was the borderline criminal behavior?
Wasn't he sexually harassing someone or something like that? I don't remember. I know he did something sketchy.

And yeah, Howie basically got locked in a closet at the far end of the building. Treated him like Milton Waddams for a couple years

I tend to lean towards not giving Peter's a crown for drafting Daniels, because even if we missed that and drafted Maye, it looks like it's still a big win pick.

No real GM botches picking between 2 blue chip franchise QBs.

However, Ron did draft Chase Young over jusin Hubert.

Specific to McCaffrey and Sinnott. And this is coming from me who did a long post this weekend about my concerns about both of them.

I am not out on either one. Not optimistic. Not pessimistic. McCaffrey only played WR for two years. He has a tremendous work ethic from what I've heard. And had some flashes last year. 1 year I think is premature to judge that pick. As to Sinnott. Aside from QB, TEs are famous for being one of the most slow burn positions. It's a complicated spot that takes plenty of TEs time. Sinnott was a very good blocker in season 1. He was burried on the depth charts by Ertz who had a great season. He's 22 going on 23. I am giving them season 2.

As far anyone could have picked Jayden Daniels. Heck I'd guess about 90% of ES wanted Maye over Daniels. PFF among others preferred Maye. But regardless for me as to QBs and Daniels, two points.

A. There is no such thing as a sure thing at QB. So I give credit for any GM who lands an elite QB. They could have taken Maye. They could have traded down. There was no guarantee that Maye was a superstar.

Trying to think of the guarantee can't miss QBs that got that billing over the years. The ones that hit me with that billing was Andrew Luck, Trevor Lawrence and Caleb Williams. Luck mostly lived up to his billing. Lawrence hasn't come close to living up to his billing. And Caleb is off to a bad start. Daniels wasn't billed as a QB with that type of can't miss billing. Heck the Bears were so convinced Caleb was the guy, they didn't even bother to scout Daniels.

B. It's not like our other GMs over the years didn't have opportunities to nail down franchise QBs. Gibbs was smittened by Jason Campbell but alas not Aaron Rodgers. Russell Wilson was there for the taking in the 2012 draft. We could have drafted Herbert. We could have drafted Hurts. We could have drafted Lamar. I's not as if franchise QBs were never available when we picked.

He absolutely sucked. Bad drafts, FO drama and borderline criminal behavior.

We had good QBs and a freaking insanely talented coaching staff. How many of the coaches on that team are now HCs or close to it? A lot.
Um. I don't know if somebody has commented on this or not, but GMSM came in during the 2015 season. He was here for the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Jay was the head coach. McVay was still here (left after 2016). All the rest of the wunderkins went with Kyle to Atlanta.

The offensive coaching staff in 2015 was:

Quarterbacks – Matt Cavanaugh
Running backs – Randy Jordan
Wide receivers – Ike Hilliard
Tight ends – Wes Phillips
Offensive line – Bill Callahan
Assistant offensive line – Shane Day
Offensive quality control – Dave Ragone

It was the 2013 team which had all of the offensive assistants which went on to become HCs:
Offensive coordinator – Kyle Shanahan (SF Head Coach)
Quarterbacks – Matt LaFleur (GB Head Coach)
Wide receivers – Mike McDaniel (Dolphins HC)
Tight ends – Sean McVay (Ram's HC)
Offensive line – Chris Foerster
Assistant offensive line – Chris Morgan
Offensive assistant – Aubrey Pleasant
Offensive quality control – Richmond Flowers III
Honorable mention (not offensive coach) Raheem Morris was also on that staff on defense and is now the HC in Atlanta.)

GMSM also inherited Kirk, Pierre Garcon and D. Jackson which really was the reason the team won 9 games. (Jay and Joe Barry why the team didn't win 10+ games.)

Whether it was Dan, Bruce or Jay, all the good offenseive coaches except McVay left after the 2013 season. Most ended up with Kyle in Atlanta in 2015. Kyle went to Cleveland for a year, then resigned and went to Atlanta.

I don't necessarily disagree about GMSM. I think he was better at picking players than Dan and Bruce. Probably better than Jay. Maybe better than Mike Shanahan. But the bar is pretty low in all of those instances.

(And you and skinsinparadise should give me a lot of credit for not going on a Jay rant which was set up like an 80 mph fastball down the middle of the plate by your post. I'm learning. First PFF and now this. Man.)

The rumor was he was keeping Diana Rossini as a "side piece" and it destroyed his marriage or something like that. But that has never been confirmed, I don't believe.

Coming from me a dude who loved both Maye and Daniels, and there weren't too many people like that at ES.

I had one major concern about Maye. That is, how he played in big moments late in the game and in big games late in the season. He has a bit of a frenetic style about him in those moments. And if you watch his interviews he has some nervous energy about him that reminds me some of Kirk. And I like Kirk and i like Maye. But that red flag hasn't been assuaged in season 1.

In the pros so far Maye has been pedestrian in the 4th quarter. They didn't really have any important games though to test his ability in the clutch.

Part of the reason why I am sold that Jayden can take us to the SB is not just because his elite play but because of his quiet cool demeanor where he's amazing in the clutch.

With Maye, I think he's looking like he will be a good one. But it might be more in the Justin Herbert variety where there is something missing about playing big in the big moments-big gamesbut is a lot of fun otherwise.

And look i am not writing Maye off on that front. But there is no way I'd trade Jayden for Maye. Jayden has that "it" factor which can take us to the big dance. That Joe Montana clutch gene. I at a minimum have concerns that Maye might be lacking that gene.

So it wouldn't surprise me if Maye takes that team to the playoffs like Dak does with Dallas but continually falls short. Conversely, I like our chances with Jayden as to winning big games in the post season.

Yeah that was it.

But as a dude, Scot I've heard to death is a super nice guy. I recall an NFL insider being quoted for one story about it at the time, saying Bruce Allen brushes his teeth with Coors Light. And that Scot was in an environment where drinking was rampant and that was a bad fit for him.

I think it was Compton's podcast if I recall, maybe it was someone elses where they referenced one time the team having movie night -- Bruce and Dan show up to it and were as drunk as skunks and just giggling throughout the whole movie.

But while Dan and Bruce had reputations for being douches. Scot was a dude from what I heard who couldn't handle his liquor and needed help on that front but as a person was and is very nice. And I believe he kicked his drinking issue.

First, that video was awesome.

I think we got the best choice and pretty much every team in the 1rst round hit, except maybe Chicago and JJ is still out, but the other 4 are starters.

They could have done what Chicago did and just said we're only checking this one player out for our pick, but that's just dumb.

Getting a great QB with #2 overall when 6 go top 12 doesn't make you great, although we did probably get the best one.

I am not completely out on either of them as well... but thats probably wishful thinking.
When you see players like Mconkey, Coleman, Coker all drafted past the 1st rd producing from the get go.. its hard to imagine Mcafrey all of a sudden seeing the light... and this was with Washington's terrible wr room (aside from Terry)
Same with Sinnott.... you're overrating his blocking.. if his blocking was so great, no way the team would have resigned Bates to a top of the market for a blocking TE money.

As far as other GMs here not drafting talented QBs in later rounds.. not really the same thing. Getting Willson in the 3rd is pure luck.. just like getting Purdy in the 7th.. or even Kirk in the 4th. Doesn't matter who a bunch of arm chair ES GMs wanted ( i wanted Maye for the record) ... it came out after the draft that pretty much every teams GM ranked JD over Maye.

Bates is considered by many to be the very best blocking TE in the league and is a hack we have in the passing and running game. Given the emphasis they put on protecting Jayden, no surprise they resigned Bates

81 pass blocking grading for Sinnott via PFF. His blocking has been highlighted multiple times during games. Bringing back Bates who as Logan Paulsen likes to say is the best blocking TE in the NFL isn't damning for Sinnott. It's simply that this team clearly values blocking in a big way this off season. Their biggest trade was for a LT, #1 draft pick for a tackle. Protecting Jayden and I gather improving run blocking is a big priority. This team plays their share of 12, 13 personnel. You need 3 TEs, probably 4 make the roster.

I think the better argument against Sinnott isn't to question his blocking. But instead its for a 2nd round pick, you want pass catching prowess. TEs who major in blocking tend to go later in the draft, not in the 2nd round. Sinnott was a good blocker in college by the way, too. But again, he's behind the depth chart with Ertz and Bates. I'd give him another season. And yeah TE isn't always a hit the ground running spot.

McConkey was my favorite WR coming into that last draft in that 2nd tier. I highlighted him a ton on ES. He went early 2nd round. Coleman, also early 2nd round is a physical beast. Some thought he would go in the first round. They were much better college WRs than McCaffrey and naturally went earlier. Coker I agree came more out of nowhere. Not a great season from him but decent start.

I don't agree that getting these QBs are pure luck. I read about how Seattle was fixated on Wilson, knew they can get him later. Ditto I digested a long article about how in depth the Eagles went into Hurts and took him a little earlier than draft projections because of their fear of losing him. Great article by the way if I recall it was from the Athletic about it. But it showed how deep that team dives into prospects. Ditto the Chiefs with Mahomes. They fixed on Mahomes for years before that draft. On and on. If you are good drafting team -- consensus or lack of is irrelevant. You beat to your own drum. Sometimes you fit consensus, sometimes you don't.

I know we are used to the superficial attempts at playing the draft over the years and might assume other teams follow. But yeah its interesting to see how other teams do it. Hearing Rivera explain on Sheehan once why he wasn't into Herbert by referencing basically your point on the subject of consensus -- which was there wasn't enough consensus around Herbert came off to me pathetic and I talked about it at the time. Eagles don't give a rats behind that other teams didn't love Hurts the same way they did. If your scouting is good, you take it to another level. I think probably the best case of that here was when Joe Gibbs fell in love with Jason Campbell. He was wrong about him. But he clearly thought (based on the reports at the time) that he was a dude they didn't want to lose out on. And traded up in the first to get him. Sadly he didn't fall in love with Aaron Rodgers in that same draft.

If it's just random luck we should have been lucky years ago considering we've been fishing with many high draft picks for decades. I recall most of the scuttlebutt over the years about these QBs. I recall for example multiple leaks about GMs saying RG3 was "can't miss". Caleb is supposed can't miss. Will see. Trevor Lawrence is a transcedent prospect, best QB prospect since Andrew Luck. How's that going?

I am not lowering credit on a GM for taking a QB because it fits consensus thought. Ron Rivera lived off of going against consensus thought with first rounders here. We trash him for his mishaps on that front. If Rivera lets say went with consensus and took C. Gonzalez over Forbes and Gonzalez lived up to his billing -- it would be mega weird to say hey that one didn't count for Ron considering that was the consensus pick.

I am sure you read post draft grades including ones done years later with retrospect grades -- ever read one that said, great player, great pick, but look so many GMs would have taken the same player so we are not counting the success of that pick, lets find their non-consensus takes amd judge their drafting accordingly.

If you want an outlier take from Peters on the QB, how about him grading him above Caleb Williams. That's not consensus. Keim has even said he's not sure if Peters would have taken Caleb #2 if the Bears shocked everyone and took Daniels.

PFF ranked Jay as one of the top HCs in the last two decades.

Chris Russell will be talking about that today on his radio show.

I’m getting confused…are PFF grades to be widely accepted or are they argument dependent? 😉 (That is not in the least directed at anyone in particular, especially not at the above post.) They just seem to be either convenient or inconvenient depending on the situation.

It seems to me that neither Sinnott nor McCaffrey were bad picks per se (at least not yet) but they do seem to me to have been premature picks.
