The 2025 Draft Thread

Finshed watching the last Eagles-Commanders game.

Some takeaways based on my opinion

A. Chinn was awful in that game, I wonder if that was part of the reason why they didn't want to pay him

B. Allegretti was awful in that game. Am glad he's likely going to be a backup.

C. The O line overall was OK, not great but passable. It certainly wasn't the disaster KC's O line was in the SB against them. Coleman was mostly good, but gave up a sack and some pressures but not bad. Trent Scott up and down, he got a lot of help though. Wylie looked pretty good. Biadaz was bad, not awful but bad. But with all of that, i think the O line mostly held up.

D. Jalen Carter was mostly handled. Often by double teams.

E. The Eagles seemed to win that game thanks to turnovers of course and great coverage. The Eagles young corners were shut down. They were helped though by them playing cover 2. Eagles game plan seem to be to take away the big play in the passing game, especially outside the numbers.

F. A good running team IMO could have thwarted the Eagles game plan. Eagles bet against Washington's running game and played to stop 2nd level-3rd level passes outside the numbers

G. The way to beat their coverage was with YAC on the first level especially outside the numbers and in the intermediate in between the two safeties -- up the middle from the TE. It worked for Ertz, he exploited it. But no one else really stepped up on that front. In the first game against them if you recall, Ekeler had a big game as to short passes and gave the Eagles issues. No one really stepped up the same way in this game -- Not Ekeler, Not Zaccheus, Not Crowder, Not McCaffrey. All meh.

H. The whole offense was really Jayden and Ertz. I wasn't always paying attention to Wylie but he seemed to be the standout on that unit when I focused on it.

I. Defense was OK getting pressure on Hurts. Nothing great but made him uncomfortable more times that I remember watching the game initially. Carl Davis, #91, was surprisingly decent. Jonathan Allen and Johnny Newton had moments. Luvu had some good reps. i was surprised to see that the alternated Newton from playing 0 and 3. Hurts seemed unrattled when there is pressure except when you flush him out of the pocket, he looked erratic throwing on the move moving away from pressure in that game.

J. I posted this clip below as an example of Barkley's 3rd TD. I showed clips of the other 2. I think it was Logan and someone else who said part ot the defenses problem stopping the run is that they all aren't following their assignments and if they did it likely would look different. I sort of get that after freeze framing the Eagles running game and watching it clip by clip. So many Washington defenders seemed to get bunched up in one place, leaving big gaps. It's sort of like in a fire drill back in school, where we are instructed to stay in a neat line so we don't trip all over each other. These guys are the opposite, they pile on top of each other leaving big gaps for runners to exploit.

Somehow this point gets wrapped around the players, and no one blames Whitt. i am not saying i know who to blame. But if a defense gets gashed because players aren't in the right gaps over and over again, how is coaching not involved at all? Going back to the first clip i posed yesterday and my commentary. That Barkley run for a TD, looked poorly schemed up. They walked into the exact formation that i kept hearing Barkley likes to exploit which is when the LBs creep closer to the line of scrimmage, and once Barkley breaks free there is hardly anyone there to stop the long run. Add to that this defense tendency to crash on each other with these plays -- felt like a perfect storm. To their credit, they did adjust and have the LBs play back more after that run.

K. Lattimore when I watched him seemed to do good when it was the stem of the route, he was neck and beck with the WR, mostly AJ Brown, but would lose after the stem when the receiver would break. In other words, it looked like he kept guessing wrong as to where the route was going. Sainstrill looked decent including against the run. Quan Martin had some moments, too.

From my amateur point of view here are my takeaways for next season.

A. Clean up the D line as to stopping the run, some of it does look to me scheme related. The one player specific criticism I have to them setting the edge is those guys aren't good at shedding blocks and can get washed out of the play. The good news is Newton was one of the better ones at shedding blocks and hopefully the new D lineman are good at it, too.

B. Having Deebo and Lane to deal with the Eagles feels perfect after watching that game. IMHO, you got to kill the Eagles underneath and or with the running game. The Eagles rely on the front 4 for pressure and to stop the run. i think they are better at bringing pressure than stopping the run. But Braun makes up for it when the D line lets a runner get through.

C. Playing off of point B. The Eagles look very organized and assignment sound on defense. Much more so than our defense. Some in the local mediaI I'd guess would brush off this point and say dude they just got better players. Yeah they do have better players. But there can be two rights to the same point, it doesn't have to be one and not the other. But the point I am making is running QBs, WRs and RBs with wiggle can weave their way through traffic and exploit this. Jayden showed this more than anyone from watching that game. He didn't run much but when he did, he was dangerous and found cutback lanes.

D. Eagles secondary is really good. Having an extra half a second would help. Give Terry and company some time to beat those corners and safeties. Plus even if he doesn't, the more time he has to stretch the field the more it opens up things underneath.

E. As wacky as it sounds, Croskey-Merrit might be the key to beating that team. I know it feels like am piling on Robinson but its easy to see why he has bad games against that defense. IMO the Eagles are very gap sound and disciplined as to their defense. And Brian is so predictable as a runner and doesn't improvise much. That's easy to clamp down on for an organized assignment sound defense. Especially when they play zone, get them off their spots and create bedlam.

F. Sheehan pointed this out if I recall and rewatching that game, I agree. I hate to put Jayden out there like that but wow was he dangerous on the move and his style of running pose problems for that defense. He ran for 8 yards a carry but didn't run much. The Eagles clearly bet on Jayden staying in the pocket and not running much and they bet right. But with everything on the line, if there is a rematch, I'd unleash Jayden as a runner as much as possible.

G. Playing off of point F. You need to get that running game to force the Eagles out of cover 2 and bring a safety in. Kryen Williams was a handful for the Eagles in the playoffs and rewatching this Commanders-Eagles playoff game, I get why the Rams gave the Eagles the biggest fight, they ran the ball down their throat and that takes the Eagles off their game. In short, I know from watching other games the heart of that defense is about winning with the front 4, and playing 7 in coverage. Many preach about doing the same but the Eagles actually do it successfully. So get them out of their comfort zone by running the ball successfully.

Enjoyed the write up SIP. I heard someone else say that Chinn was bad in that game, as you said maybe there is a reason he wasn't resigned. Bit surprised to hear Biadisz looked bad, I really didn't focus on him, did it appear physical or more of a mental not working together as a unit type of thing? I've mentioned before how I think center might be an issue especially if Biadisz goes down like he did last year.

Yes very good read SIP, thanks for that!

It reads like our Edge/Ends were ho-hum. Their stats reads like ho-hum part timers who were dominated by their OL.

Our interior OL was too weak versus Phillys DT's, that's far from a shocker. If Coleman is on the inside, that should improve that issue along with out new OT's and a fully healthy Biadasz.

The OL improvements will also heavily improve our run game and buy more time for JD passing.

True but our D needs to be able to pressure the other team's OL causing more turnovers and 4 and outs.

Edge rushers were OK. Armstrong had some moments. As a full unit the D line was manhandled by the Eagles O line with the run game and it came off that they were out schemed. The Eagles O line coach is supposed to be the best.

Besides the turnovers, the issue in that game IMO were the offensive playmakers aside from Ertz. O line interior was bad but I dont think thats what did them in.

Judging by that game alone Deebo and Lane potentially could swing things against that team. The opposing defense cant do everything. They left themselves vulnerable to the running game and Wrs making plays on the first level. Hopefully, Deebo, Lane, Croskey-Merritt answer that call.

Also considering to my eyes Coleman and Wylie were the best O lineman in that game. That bodes perhaps to them playing guard in the rematch.

Yes to all of this. I do wish we had a speedier do it all TE that could threaten the seam. A Colston Loveland could really open things up for Daniels.

Also, Cosmi was out in that game. Hopefully, if we see the Eagles in the playoffs, Cosmi is back and full strength.

I agree that Deebo could really be a huge addition.

Also, I would think that with better OT play, we won’t have to chip/double out there, and we would have the freedom to keep a RB in to block, if we need. You can’t help everywhere.

Watching that game very slowly pausing most plays and rewatching them twice. It's a great way to dissect a game IMO.

Eagles basically play us to shut down the deep-intermediate passing game. And dare us to win via the short passing game-running game.

And Robinson, Ekeler, Crowder, Zaccheus didn't rise to that occasion. If your running game against mostly a cover 2 based defense and a light box, can't take advantge of that, you got problems. And that's what happened. the Eagles clearly don't feel threatened by Robinson or by our receivers as to YAC. And they played their defensive accordingly.

And even with all of that, if we just protected the ball, we could have won rewatching that.

Sheehan was saying the other day, we just got marginally better versus the Eagles compared to last year. He likes our off season so he wasn't negative but that was his conclusion as to the gap with the Eagles.

Rewatching that game, I disagee. I think we closed the gap much more than marginally.

The O line wasn't a train wreck like the Chiefs were in the SB, but Jayden was hurried a bit too much. The Eagles have a good secondary but that's enhanced when the QB doesn't have that much time to throw. And if you can't run the ball against the Eagles or beat them WCO style with WRs who can do YAC -- they are difficult to beat.

Being able to protect Jayden for longer, hopefully run the ball, and have WRS who are dangerous with the ball in their hands on the first level should make a big difference in the rematch.

Also, I'd assume this coaching staff would have learned their lesson after last year that while they preach "ball is life", the Eagles actually live that credo and take the ball away. Protect the ball. There is no way I believe rewatching that game that this coaching staff stressed hard for this team to protect the ball. it comes off more that they thought the previous game where the Eagles took the ball 5 times away was a fluke. Now that they took the ball 9 times away in 2 games, I'd gather there will be more emphasis on protecting the ball.

Transforming our O line from barely passable to a strength (in theory) should make a major difference. Ditto having playmakers who can threaten a defense with YAC. And as far as the defense goes -- replacing Forbes-St. Juste with Amos and Jones should be a big improvement. Also while i don't love this D line they should be at least better against the run.

To combat the run woes, Washington got bigger inside. They added nose tackle Eddie Goldman (332 pounds) and Javon Kinlaw (330 pounds), who will, in part, replace Jonathan Allen, who they released March. Whether or not these two provide more help will be revealed during the season, but they will have more size. Allen said in 2024 that he played between 280-290 pounds, wanting to increase his quickness. Deatrich Wise Jr., too, is a sturdy defensive end at 280 pounds.

"Big run stopper," Atlanta Falcons coach Raheem Morris said of Goldman, who played for Morris last season. "You can't move him. He's got some strong hands. He's one of my favorites."

“This is following the blueprint of how to fix an offensive line,” an exec said. “Throw all of your resources at the problem. I’m shocked they didn’t take another one, frankly.”

...“There is no development when you do that,” another exec said. “‘We have the young quarterback (Jayden Daniels). Let’s solidify the left side. Then they draft a guy in Conerly who has a ton of upside, can play guard if need be, can slide into that battle at right tackle. He is a high-end athlete, he is young in this class. All that stuff is really, really positive for them.”

And even with all of that, if we just protected the ball, we could have won rewatching that

Loved you recap, and this was my biggest impression from the game. Seemed like we had guys who felt like they were outgunned and needed to play above themselves to make up for it, when really they should have just stayed within themselves and let Jayden run the offense like usual.

To your point about closing the gap and what we improved, this team continually moved the ball at all times last season, if the trench play is as upgraded as it seems, they should be able to do precisely whatever they want, whenever they want.

Yeah the biggest takeaway for me rewatching it was I didn't recall how well the O line was or wasn't in that game. Seems like the narrative over time was from some in the media that we had a variation of what happened to the Chiefs albiet not as bad as to the game being about their D line destroying our O line. I think the Chiefs game sort of collapsed into this game some as to the recap with some. Heck I wasn't sure about that either with my memory playing tricks on me, too a little.

But yeah rewatching it, the O line was "meh". Not terrible. Allegretti really struggled. Biadaz wasn't hot. Scott was exposed at times when he was 1 on 1 but was mostly fine because they double blocked Carter and did so successfully for the most part. M. Williams was the issue along with Jordan Davis from time to time not Carter. Wylie seemed to contain the right side well. Coleman was mostly good to my eyes but lost a couple of times -- Sweat though didn't wreck the game the way he did versus KC.

The defensive line looked disorganzied against the run but was OK, not great, not bad, at bringing pressure. Lattimore had a bad game. Chinn had a really bad game. Armstrong flashed some. The others on defense looked fine to me. Quan Martin and Sainstrill and Luvu and Wagner especially to my eyes at a minimum played with a lot of energy.

To me my main takeaway was Robinson was a big problem and the receivers. lol, as to Robinson i don't hate the dude. But I get annoyed that the local media seems so protective of him. He gets let off the hook and the O line gets the blame for every meh performance coupled with this false narrative that he was Walter Payton earlier in the season but the poor sucker get banged up or lost some confidence and wasn't the same afterward.

When a team plays cover 2 almost all game, let alone a team that does it with good cornerbacks, they are daring you to run. I gather that's how they played the Rams in the playoffs and Kryen Williams had a big day and made them pay. Robinson did nothing in that game against the light boxes. And then the kicker was almost none of the short passing game was working. Ekeler, Zaccheus, Crowder, Dyami has yawn games.

But even with all of that, they still had a shot of beating them. The turnovers were the kicker. Jayden quietly had one of his better games. He was making lemonade out of lemons. He got so little help from his offense that day. it was he and Ertz against the world.

The defense wasn't hot but it was Ok enough if the offense was on that day. I know the score doesn't indicate that but as we know the Eagles piled on the points at the end of the game to make the score look lopsided.

I feel mostly good after rewatching it. My 2 concerns after watching it doubles down on my two pet peeves about this team.

A. I don't get this odd loyalty to Brian Robinson from this staff. Benching Rodriguez for the playoffs? I know he's become a bit of a polarzing debate with some fans digging him and some say he's a JAG. Look the dude granted in a limited sample was #7 in PFF as to RBs last year. He averaged almost 1 yard more a carry than Robinson. If people want to say Rodriguez is a jag anyway. Fine. But give me the argument for why Robinson doesn't deserve to have his job challenged by dudes who played better in their limited stints.

People can say Rodriguez is a jag but they can't say he played worse or even the same as Robinson when he played. It's a fact that Rodriguez played better. It's not debatable. But look I don't give a rats behind who plays. I am a fan of Croskey-Merritt. But in short, Robinson hasn't earned the status of he is the unquestionable starter.

B. As I mentioned, I've heard from some who watched the games closely, if I recall Logan was one of them on a podcast, that the issue with stopping the run is somewhat about players not following their assignments well. Watching these runs slowly clip by clip, it makes more sense to me now. These guys get bunched up together in one place where it looks like they are almost stepping on each other and they leave big gaps open. And its a variety of them. A gap. D gap. On and on.

i come off as a bit of a Joe Whitt critic. And to make myself clear, I don't feel like a critic of him. I am agnostic on him. I just don't get why its off limits to think maybe he's the answer, maybe he's not. As I've mentioned in other posts, the thing I dislike the most about this defense is they play their worst typically in the 4th quarter and with the game on the line. And while they preach ball is life. They don't live that credo. They had less picks this year than the wretched season that Del Rio had with that unit the season before. The defensive line seems disjointed on some run plays. That feels at least possible on coaching?

I feel uncertain about Whitt. i am not even leaning negative. I can go either way on it. And I certainly think a new coach learns a lot in year 1, first time coordinator. So i am plenty open minded about it. But the fact that he's a nice guy and classy and kills his press conferences with fun tough talk doesn't move me anymore. I want to see some improvements. I realize he doesn't have a ton of talent. But for me I see some red flags with coaching. And I might be wrong about those red flags but they are in my mind and I want to see those red flags disproven.

Robinson definitely looked worn down as the season went on, and they obviously like him, as they kept feeding him the ball despite how ineffective he was down the stretch. The question for me is how we prevent that next season. Do we use Robinson early in games to soften the D and then bring in a more explosive back (hopefully Bill) later in games/drives to punish arm tackles, or do we just rotate the backs more to keep them fresh. Just staying with Robinson whilst he's out of juice for whatever reason, seemed a bit of a poor decision last season.

RB's will say that they get more effective as the game goes on, and defenses tire, but it makes sense that the RB's tire and get dinged up as the games and the seasons go on too. That is what it felt like to me with Robinson last year, so with decent backup's, I wonder if they look to rotate more, either throughout the game or use quicker backs later in games to improve the effectiveness of our running game throughout the season (and prolong RB careers too maybe).

Robinson had some awful games earlier in the season. Week 1. Week 3. Week 5.

He's an up and down RB. Doesn't matter what part of the season. heck even in the playoffs -- bad game versus Tampa, good game versus the Lions, bad game versus Philly

He's sort of our Forrest Gump style box, he's a box of choclates, you never know what version you get of him week to week. The only thing you can count on is the wild inconsistency.

Yeah am sure as the season progresses like any NFL player especially backs wear down. He misses games every season. 3 games this season. Not sure that's respite for him, though.

I don't think a fresher Robinson makes much of a difference. But I do agree with those who say he'd play better with an improved offensive line. For reasons I previously stated, Robinson IMO is more at the mercy of the offensive line play than some backs considering his style. So for him specfically to play better, i do think if this O line is on fire, he likely will play well enough but we can do better IMO.

He can't seem to manufacture his own yardage through physicality, anticipation, acceleration or vision. He is primarily only as good as the holes his OL creates when he finds and gets through them to the second level.

SIP, good reason not to overpay for Chinn. That would have definitely been a Rivera move.

I'm excited about the safety change. Not that Chinn was always bad, but it felt like he was always a beat behind or a step slow reacting to his guy leaking laterally in coverage. He'd spend half a second staring into the backfield, not moving, while his guy gets open shallow for a 5 yard gain that he then tackles.

So it's good he's athletic enough to recover and tackle, but he's not forcing tough catches on those.

I'm of the opinion SS is a more interchangeable and less valuable position than RB...unless you get a great one. But there aren't many great ones that are really scheme diverse. So never overpay, don't overdraft. Look for positive traits and draft to develop.

"Coach, if you need one yard, I'll get you three yards. If you need five yards, I'll get you three yards."

Ron Rivera as GM with Snyder as owner is the reason the quip "It's always darkest just before the dawn" was invented.

“Ekeler, Zaccheus, Crowder, Dyami has yawn games”

God. That’s also just a yawn list of players. We had that plus McLaurin? It’s a miracle we did as well as we did against the NFC with that skill group, OL, CB room, etc. It’s a testament to Jayden and the coaching staff.

I honestly am fine with our skill position group, but still don’t love them. Team by team, where would you rate our WR’s, TE’s, RB’s, as a whole, against the NFL? I’d say average. Maybe. That’s probably fine with our OL and a top 5 QB.

Still, I think you’re right. Deebo is exactly the right kind of piece to counter the Eagles. I think our team success is really going to be affected of how much Deebo has left. We aren’t going to get 1400 receiving yards Deebo, but if he is an impact YAC player and can come up big in big games, we might have someone that can impact games for us more than they would for other teams, like Ertz, last year.

Regarding Robinson, I agree 100%. I think he’s ok. Up and down. Average. He’s not a, “weapon”. I still think getting an actual weapon at RB and TE could take us to a different level.

I don’t think Croskey-Merritt is a bell cow, but, if he can be a real impact player for us, that would be an enormous boost. Lane also could be a help as a WR4 type. And I think there is some overlap in how Deebo has been used and Lane. Hand offs. Reverses. Etc. if Lane can have some impact as a speed/YAC guy underneath, that could also help us against the Eagles.

This team feels like it’s an offseason away from having a roster that is 85% of the Eagles/Lions last year. On both sides of the ball. But a roster that’s 85% of the 2024 Eagles, with a non-rookie Jayden Daniels…

Regarding Whitt, I don’t want to agree, but my gut agrees . I’m not sure about him. Maybe it’s a different era, but it felt like a guy like Gregg Williams could get average production out of any defensive roster and could get top 10 production out of a slightly more talented roster. Whit didn’t have much talent last year, but the defense didn’t play above their talent level the way the offense did. Our CB room looks so much better than the beginning of last year. Our run defense should be better. I want to see if he can scheme up a solid defense without having dogs at edge.

Also…

Conerly seems a little bit like a Jayden Daniels at OT. I think he has a chance to be really, really good, between the talent, and the reported work ethic.

Our run defense should be better. I want to see if he can scheme up a solid defense without having dogs at edge.

Also…

Conerly seems a little bit like a Jayden Daniels at OT. I think he has a chance to be really, really good, between the talent, and the reported work ethic.

Yeah as to those passing weapons, it seemed like one of them would at least have a good game in the home stretch. But that didn't happen in that game, they all were "meh"

As I mentioned, the dude who was a handful was Jayden. Ditto as a runner, 8 YPC. He was basically a one man show with Ertz in that game. If the Eagles play us like that again, we need either the running game to step up or the short passing game but preferable both.

He hit like a MF though and we don't have that guy on our roster now. Unless Tyler Owens crazy ass wakes up anyway.

A defense will never scare anyone without an enforcer and we didn't replace that.
