I'm kind of curious about this guy because the Tush Push is very reminiscent to a maul or scrum in rugby, and this guy was a pro rugby player.

Don’t be. He played full back in rugby (kind of like a free safety) - he was nowhere close to a scrum.

Ohhh...didn't know he was a fullback. Most he would have been in is a maul then. I was a wing and a backup fullback

I think the Eagles tush push is more like a rolling maul off a line out than a scrum anyway.

I think the tush push gets banned based on what I heard on NFL network today. A lot of defensive stars voicing opposition to it to owners.

Well, for many years in the NFL it was deemed an illegal play. Pushing or pulling a teammate with the ball was always a penalty, until the league changed the rules about 20 years ago.

This debate always reminds me of an article in the Washington Post I read when I was a kid, probably 50-55 years ago that proposed using a giant man, like Andre the Giant, to take a dwarf man who has the ball, and throw him over the line of scrimmage. The author (can’t recall if it was Shirley Povich, or someone else) surmised that the play would be unstoppable for at least a 3-5 yard gain every play. The only drawback being if the opponent had their own Giant and dwarf defensive combo, then the midair collisions could be horrid. Author argued that as the rule was written, the player would be propelled by throwing, not “pushing or pulling,” as was written in the NFL rule book.

An all-time article, IMO, obviously because it has stayed with me for half a century plus.

So this make all of those fairly common situations where the RB is still churning his feet but at a virtual halt by defenses and OL get behind him and push forward for additional yardage illegal as well?

I think by definition it would, (which I believe was illegal back in my day as well.) so you bring up an interesting point and how many plays get called back due to that being a judgement call, and all of that ticky-tack crap to follow. For that reason alone, I'm almost tempted to hope the NFL continues to allow it and lets the coaches find a way to stop it.

A few points about this.

If they ban it, they should call it the Jalen Hurts rule, so it immortalizes the player who is able to make it work.

If they don't ban it, the Eagles should run only the tush push against the Packers for an entire game and just put those whiney clowns in the dirt,

The NFL doesn't care about player safety at all. If they did, they'd all be required to wear those stupid looking mushroom caps.

Nobody has gotten hurt from the play, so that's a lie.

In the 2000's teams whined about the Patriots success and it led to the pussification of the league. Stop playing down to losers.

Having plays that mimic other sports, which the NFL obviously does with kicking and punting, will help with the international push.

RBs are constantly pushed by the pile. So are TEs and WRs and QBs when they run.

3 seasons ago, Eagles go to the SB, there's a push to ban the play.

I actually think the play sucks. And it also seems unfair. The defense is expressly prohibited from getting behind a player and pushing them. If the defense isn’t allowed to do it, why should the offense be? Also, I prefer football that looks like football. I can’t think of a less exciting play. The TV product would be better without it. Also, screw the eagles.

By definition, the tush push makes it intentionally not mano e mano.

Football hasn't looked like NFL football, since they started changing rules to protect Brady. Same with the WRs. It looks like arena football now, compared to the 80's.

Honestly, i don't like either because of what was stated above. The Defense isn't allowed to push someone, so why should the offense. Let the D push their own teammates as well.

I now need an AI version of The Mountain throwing Tyrian Lannister over a group of knights lined up in a goal line formation playing a fantasy version of American Football.

However, I'm not sure how the play should end:

1. Tyrian survives and lands with a flourish
2. He gets eaten by a dragon mid-air
3. The Hound throws Arya at the same time, and Arya punctures the ball with Needle and Tyrian with the Catspaw Dagger

EDIT to add, the football should be a dragon egg. Maybe if you get the egg over the goal line, the dragon has a greater chance of hatching? Or maybe not.

That's not why I don't like it.

If you come up with something nobody can stop, that's fine.

But I'm not entirely sure their formation is legal, and I'm not sure the pushing of the QB by a RB/FB is legal either. I've heard coaches and media say it both ways. I think it might come down to interpretation of a rule, I'm not sure.

One way or the other, I think it should be clarified: is the formation legal? Are you allowed to push a player at the LOS? If both are ok, then fine. But then the defense has to be afforded the same allowance, and I want a DT lined up behind a DT and I want pushing from the defense also.

And THAT I think would start to become not exactly safe.

So maybe just go back to the regular old QB sneak. Literally everything about the current play could remain exactly the same EXCEPT Hurts couldn't be pushed from behind. It's probably still a 90% conversion situation.
