However, in the ruthless world of NFL scouting, none of that matters if the stopwatch tells the wrong story. Unfortunately, “Arizona State standout running back Cam Skattebo officially ran a 4.65 40-yard dash at his Pro Day today.” That Pro Day line was exactly what could make front offices hesitate. Not slow, but “S” in Skattebo is not for speed.

This is exactly what you see on tape.

 
The OT group is a bit better than I thought. I overlooked about half a dozen who could be Day 3 values.

Kaleb Johnson was up there for a period with Hampton when the process started as to who is RB #2. then Judkins who like Johnson is a big dude killed it at the combine and then Kaleb had a meh combine and the combination seemed to hurt him with the draft media.

I did the same thing. He started as a guy i was really high on and then stopped after the combine. Actually in a weird way a bit like me with Jayden last draft season. I was super high on Jayden early. lol, then I got aggravated with some Drake Maye hate on a thread and they kept pitting one againist the other so I wasn't as high on Jayden. Then I rewatched Jayden, and got smitten again.

Yeah last weekened rewatching Kaleb, I got the bug again for him. It's hard to put into words but when you watch Barkley with the Eagles. He's a different guy than he was with the Giants. I've watched a lot of Barkley over the years because I have some family who likes them. Barkley is a freak of course and the Eagles O line is stellar. that's most of it. But some of it is he seems more determined to take it to the house. When they pan to him on the sideline he has a different look in his eye.

That's how Kaleb comes off watching him. When he breaks free, he seems determined to go to the house. His vision in open field looks superb. Ditto contact balance. Scouts, judging by McGinn's reports, remain high on him. He's their #4 back.

Skattebo beyond what I've already said. He accounted for 40% or so of Arizona's offense which is insane. About 340 touches between the passing and running game. When they played Texas or whomever, the game plan was to stop him, and he did well anyway.
 
Cam is a power back in the mode of Kyren Williams who also ran a 4.65 and jumped a 32.5. Cam jumped a 39.5 so he has arguably more athleticism. Explosion numbers matter sometimes more than pure speed.

But yeah especially in the playoffs, in the cold, and you want to go old school, good power backs can make a difference. Sans his fumble, Kyren was a handful for the Eagles in the playoffs, better than 5 yards a carry, 100 plus yards. Brian did nothing against the Eagles all season.

If you want a dude who can consistently get singles and sometimes doubles and break tackles regardless of how "on" the O line is that day and is one of the best pass catchers in this group with the best pass catching numbers in this group and who sets a tone, Cam's for you.

If its a breakway fast dude or bust, Cam is definitiely not for you. For me, if they take ANY power back, I'd want to double down with a speed one. If Brian is our power back even in rotation, to me its "meh".

There really is something to playing games that matter. I don't think the player eve necessarily feels the difference or that there's a difference in their effort level. I suspect if we asked the players in Rivera's last year they would all report that they were giving it their all and yet balls getting dropped, tackles were being broken, and concentration just was lacking. Likewise, with Washington last year, we all remarked how this team overachieved and how it was such a try-hard team. So many players exceeded their statistical averages. They showed their best selves.

Maybe that was coaching. Maybe it was Jayden's magic. Maybe it was that these players felt something special happening around them and wanted to maximize it. If you ask me, it was all of the above. Likewise, Barkley was a very good player for the Giants and a great one for the Eagles. Who knows if Barkley sits out with an injury with the Giants that he gutted through last year. He was part of something and was determined to max out. No play exemplified it more than that crazy ninja highlight that got played on a loop.
 
4.65 ain't great but we knew guy wasn't a speedster. Doesn't really move the needle negatively for me. As long as he didn't run like 4.8 or more (like Restrepo) he's okay. He is who we thought he was.

4.65 may be the best he can do under the most ideal conditions. Pro day results are often geared to tilt in favor of the player. At a different site, his time is probably closer to 4.8 or even 5 than 4.65. There's a reason players try to control where and how they run.

Same here. And a 39.5 vertical isn't something to sneeze it. You aren't a stiff athlete when you can jump that high -- and higher than if I recall then about 95% of this class including explosive runners like Henderson.

I am in the camp of wanting home run hitting RBs, too. My only difference with some in that group, is i am a little flexible on it. So if they go with a power runner they love, I get it. As I've said too many times, Robinson's issues IMO isn't style. Plenty of power running backs are very good and are a handful for teams to deal with especially when the weather gets cold. His issue IMO is he's a jag power runner.

In case anyone is like me and had to go look up who Kaleb Johnson is:



Guy looks like an incredible athlete. Would he still be around in the second round or later? Where do the draftniks have him going?

Mock draft types have him somewhere from the mid 2nd to mid third.

2/3 most likely. His pass pro is lacking badly at this point. So that kind of kills his 3rd down value.
 
Man I wish PFF had like, a $40 offseason package that was just one time fee and gave you access to everything for the NFL FA and Draft from like day after the Superbowl until like June 1.

Instead it's either 24/mo or 119 annual and neither of those are good options when I only hyperfixate for 3 months of the year.

Speaking of PFF fro whatever reason they aren't high on Henderson's pass pro. They think he's so so on that front and they are clearly outliers on that and I know not everyone within PFF agrees.

For pass pro. They give really low scores to Jayden Blue and Tuten and Yarns.

Bad scores but not as bad as the above group to: Kaleb, Martinez, B. Smith, J. James. M. Johnson,

Then you got a bunch with basically average scores

The good ones according to them are: Hampton, Skattebo, Judkins, Neal, Mullings, Brooks, Jackson.

The only elite score they gave for it is to Monangai

I like this prospect. He's got nice pop with his hands - Green is the best in this group by a country mile in that regard for me but Antwaun is good too.

Just by watching the highlights you can see the emphasis on ball security that Monangai displays, add in the fact that he is great at pass protection, I like him alot.

I know his pro day left a lot of questions but glad to see we seem to be doing our due diligence with him. Could definitely be a great slot for us after some development. Although how similar is he to McCafrey as a prospect?
 
My favorite slot guys for us are Chimera Dike Florida & Jerjuan Newton Toledo (Johnny's bro) but like Restrepo as well.
