The 2025 Draft Thread

I definitely don't see going RB in the first. They seriously need pass rush and there should be somebody worthy of the pick. If not and it's a RB then that is pretty surprising.
I am usually against RB in the 1st, but I think Henderson would be a huge boost. Elite receiving skills and good at pass pro, he could take out offense into another tier. I've had my focus on Donovan E from BC, and I'd be ok with EE from Ohio St, but the idea of adding Henderson is exciting. And then we offer our 2nd for Hendrickson and I'll be salivating for opening day.

Remember great coaching and a strong front office helps. Look at the guys Gibbs had. He managed a few problem players

Reminds me, I need to look at Que Robinson - he's in that group of OLB/Edge prospects that gives me a headache.
He doesn't have stand out stats but you must wonder, how might he have matured if he wasn't stuck behind so many studs early. He is a guy I'd make certain to study and interview. Interested to hear your take on him.

It's not that hard to believe he was a S when you watch the he can move and flex but damn he'd be a monster in the backfield lol.

Another LB/Edge type guy that caught me eye but haven't really read much on is David Walker. He shows up very high on the pass rush win chart SIP posted yesterday. He is a too short (6 1), too short armed (just under 32), small school dude who plays at a high level.

Some of his accolades -
three consecutive First-Team All-American selections, three straight conference Defensive Player of the Year awards, and the prestigious Buck Buchanan Award as the nation's top FCS defender in 2024. The numbers tell the story of a defensive force: 31 sacks and 63 tackles for loss over three seasons, with his final campaign featuring 23 TFLs, 10.5 sacks, and 55 total pressures. Before becoming the Bears' wrecking ball...

I stopped it there because it can't get better than being called a wrecking ball. 55 pressures!

He like Que could be a good later Edge option if they don't get one early or if they wanted to double dip.

Love David Walker.

I think I may have come across another Day 3 Edge sleeper type. Draft Tec, BNB Football & Draft Scout are my go to site's as far as generating a pool of prospects to screen. Draft Tec is IMO the best at finding hidden gems.

Anyway, that player is Danny Striggow Minnesota Golden Golphers #92 - really like this guy as a Commanders fit on Day 3. Ditto for Brendan Mott Kansas State #38.

I am still a big Dylan Sampson fan!! VERY QUICK and VERY FAST!! And he has terrific vision!! Could be a bit more patient at times. And has fumbled a few times (not any more than Skattebo though, per attempt . . . lol) but he played against damn good competition and found away to be a beast even without a top o-line in front of him.

The McGinn series has come out where personnel guys from different teams tell Mcginn what they think of these prospects. And their takes historically are more predictive of where these player go compared to mocks. They have Sampson as the 11th rated back, behind Tuten which I found interesting. One of them wondered if Sampson slides to the 5th. I doubt it but at a minimum feels slam dank he's there to be had in the third.

Look I like Sampson but i am not really married to any of these RBs, I'd be happy with a whole bunch of them. Judging by the scout's takes, a number of good running backs could be had in the third, Skattebo included. But i also really dig Hampton, Giddens, Kaleb Johnson. Tuten, Blue, Harvey, intrigue me.

Sampson is interesting. He was the first guy i think I landed on here after Henderson. But the deeper I dove into him, I found him to be a big enigma including for a dude that's fast, he doesn't have many 15 plus yard runs. One of the lowest in this group. One of the scouts goes "decent burst through the line of scrimmage but struggles with long speed." That comment bears out. Compare to Henderson for example. Henderson has much better hands as to pass catching (Sampson has a number of drops) and fumbles. Henderson is more explosive. More big runs. Henderson burns light boxes, Sampson not so much.

But Sampson for a small guy is feisty and can get you first downs. Tough runner. He's good closer to the red zone which is something you wouldn't expect for a smaller back. And has potential to be a better back IMO in the pros.

As far as fumbles go, ESPN has Skattebo at zero, some have him at 1. A couple of dudes on twitter said he had a ton. Warren Sharp who did a statistical profile on the running backs including highlighting fumbles -- didn't say a word about Skattebo having an issue with it but did mention Sampson. But I don't know one way or another with the mixed info on the subject.

As far as Sampson doing it with a non top notch O line. Not sure about that. At a minimum, he faced some light boxes and they kept him clean where he had some runway before getting hit more so than any other RB in this group. To quote Sharp "Sampson faced 6.3 defenders in the box per rush, the 2nd lowest in this class." Playing in Tennessee's open offense, he ran against a light box (6 or few defenders) on 60.9% of his runs but only produced a first down or touchdown on 22.9% of his runs against light fronts (third lowest).

"Tennesse elevated some of his counting stats. He was hit at or behind the line of scrimmage on only 26% of his runs, the lowest rate in the class."

Am I the only one that wants Judkins over Hendrerson?

Maybe. I think both are going to be available in the 2nd.

I like Judkins, I'd take Kaleb Johnson over him though as far as the big backs. Hampton, too. I'd take Henderson though over Judkins because of the fit to this offense. I love the idea of an explosive guy who runs up the middle in a RPO heavy offense,

Here is some of the comments from scouts from the McGinn stuff on these guys, I'll focus on the guys we all talk about most. I'll try to focus on the positives because the negatives are usually over the top.

Hampton (2)
“I’m going to sound crazy saying this but I like him over Boise (Jeanty),” said one scout. “Athletic, strong mover with burst. Stays low on contact. Runs with vision. Average twitch, but he’ll run through some tackles. Hands are fine. Makes plays in space. Pass pro is good.” Tested well with a 38-inch vertical jump and a 10-10 broad jump. “He is a punishing runner but he also has exceptional contact balance to stay on his feet through those collisions,” said a second scout.

Henderson (3)
“Ran pretty fast. He’s really, really well-liked. He’s undersized. Does he run good? Yeah, but people value other positions more than running backs. I don’t think he’s going in the first.” Missed games in 2022-’23 with a variety of injuries. “The durability is the big question for him,” said a second scout. “He has to stay healthy. He went through injury problems a year ago, which really hurt the team. He’s got good feet. I don’t know if he has elite vision like some other guys. I wouldn’t put him in the first but because his hands are good enough and he’s a big-play threat I could see him going in the second. He’s a great guy. He’ll be great in the locker room no matter where he goes. I never saw him as having great vision to be a consistent inside runner.”

K. Johnson (4)
Lot of explosive runs of 25-plus yards,” one scout said. “Had a few that were 50-plus. Has a burst to run stretch and get downhill. Is able to exploit inside run lanes. Shows good patience for (following) blockers. Capable of running behind his pads and showing leg drive and contact balance. Limited targets out of the backfield but showed reliable hands. Can still improve in pass protection. Kind of a one-year full-time starter.” Led the Big Ten in 2024 with 1,537 yards and 21 TDs. “He’s smooth-moving with really good vision,” a second scout said.

Judkins (5)
“More of a slasher,” a second scout said. “Not really a natural runner. Not much wiggle. Just kind of a one-cut, run-as-hard-as-you-can into something. Brings some energy. Maybe second round.” Ran a much faster 40 than more than one personnel man anticipated. “Frickin’ tough guy,” a third scout said. “He’s a short-yardage back. I’d go with Judkins over Henderson because I’d much rather have a guy who can grind out first downs. It is close.”

Skattebo (9)
“I’ve never seen anything like this guy,” one scout said. “It’s a train wreck every run. I don’t know how long he’s gonna last. He can play, though. He’s got great vision and balance. He can find little creases in there. He’s got some niftiness. But after that, when it’s contact time, every run is bang-bang-bang! He’s fighting and somebody else hits him in the back, and then he lines up again. It’s incredible. Never seen a back like this. One guy compared him to Mike Alstott, but he was 250 pounds. If you can get him through a couple years without him getting hurt, you’d love to have that kid’s energy on the team.”

Tuten (10)
“He ran that 4.2 and you see that on the field,” one scout said. “He is the most explosive of all these guys. Runs hard, too. You get him in a crease or the open field and it’s over with. He’s the closest one to (Jahmyr) Gibbs as far as, if there’s a crease, it’s over. He’s in the mix as my No. 2 running back (in the draft).” Tuten’s vertical jump of 40 ½ also led the position. His broad jump was 10-10. “I’m a big fan,” another scout said before the combine.

Sampson (11)
“He’s fairly similar to Etienne,” said one scout. “Slippery between the tackles. Good foot quicks. Like his vision and timing. Has pass-down value. He may slide to the fifth. Etienne’s a willing blocker. This guy, they don’t even seem to use him as a blocker. He doesn’t do special teams. You like the runner. He was productive this year in the Southeastern Conference. That counts for a lot. But the lack of versatility … it’s hard for me to say this guy is a true starter.

James (13)
Said one scout: “He’s OK. Everybody’s going to bump him up because of the (Oregon) kid last year (Bucky Irving, fourth round) who stirred everybody up in Tampa. He had a good rookie year so I think it will spook everybody to give him a (long) look. Third day.”

Harvey (16)
Said one scout: “Kind of a poor man’s Bucky Irving. Kind of built the same way. Really like his demeanor. Compact guy. He’s shown he can catch the ball out of the backfield. He’ll be a solid, efficient, productive No. 2 back that can ascend into a heavier role with more experience.”

I sort of eluded in one post as to the explosiveness of Tuten over a more touted RB like Sampson. I recall me and Hail Raiser going back and forth touting Tuten. Tuten is a legit homerun hitter. The knock against him is he needs to clean up fumbles. He also is more of in that run around contact variety of backs, working the edges versus inside. Henderson and Sampson can kill you inside. But fast dudes like Tuten were more likely going to make you pay in college. And to some extent I can say the same about Blue and Harvey. They are more explosive than Sampson.

I am not saying this to pick on Sampson. I'd like it if they drafted him too for reasons I stated. But the odd thing about Sampson is he wasn't mr big explosive play in college.

This is such a great draft for RBs. I like a few of the big guys on day two. Skattebo is so interesting. Tuten on day 3 is a homerun pick I think. I could also see him not being an NFL RB of any kind.

There is a RB for every flavor. It sucks we don't have our mid third round pick anymore because it feels like a good sweet spot. It makes trading down if possible or using that late 2nd rounder more in play for me for this spot.

Skattebo I keep going back to because he screams what they tout as far as being a physical team and defenses having to deal with both Deebo and Cam would feel painful. It would create a clear identity with this team. Bates-Skattebo-Deebo-Noah Brown. the physicality would rival the SF offense back in the day of Kittle, Juan Jennings, Aiyuk, Deebo. Damien Martinez is of this kind, not as physical but more dynamic. Monangai who has zero hype with mock drafters, also really physical, and a really good pass protector.

If they are going with speed-explosion. Henderson, Tuten, Blue, Harvey, Giddens. Sampson has potential on this front.

The bigger backs Judkins and Kalen Johnson are intriguing. Judkins is who I gather Ron wanted Robinson to be, a consistent singles hitter. I like Kaleb more because he's an even bigger dude and he's a consistent doubles hitter but I wonder about scheme fit -- he's a lot of outside zone.

Then you got the guys in the middle: Not power, not explosive. But brings some speed: Etienne, J. Hunter

Then you got the guys who are more consistent grinders like: Jordan James, D. Neal.

Then you got a bunch of guys that am still trying to figure out how to place.

Watched a lot of Tuten at VA Tech. Im with you on not being sure if his skill set translates to the NFL. At times it seemed he did not have the pound the rock style to his game, though he did have some big runs that went through the center of the line where he did not have to break contact and he then was able to break away due to his speed. I think he is definitely worth a flyer mid to late rounds but I dont see him fitting the every down back mold.

Im a little surprised (pleasantly) that DQ addressed these questions head on, these are the types of questions coaches, especially this early in the year, dance around. Can change obviously but its refreshing to hear what they are thinking.

A lot of these RBs are more role players. Arguably even Henderson who the fan base seems to love the most. The thing about Tuten, he can be physical and can break tackles. So he's not a pure scat back. I just looked it up, he had the biggest number for bench presses in this group.

I value the draft grading of McGinn's scouts. They tend to out perform, the mock drafters as to what actually happens on draft day. It looks like the NFL is higher on Tuten than the mock draft media.

Athletically he's clearly a freak. We are talking about Thornton being a freak but not having the production to match at WR. Tuten does have the production. He's up there in many stats among this group.

Outside of Ek and BRob, the rest of our backs are on PS contracts, right?

Good draft to overhaul that room.

I do agree with Dwinzit about WR>RB, not that we have to make that distinction.

and BRob is still on his rookie deal so he should be cheap, too.
