Maryland Men’s Basketball

I agree that big time college football and basketball have been dirty for multiple decades. But those suitcases full of money for talented players have always come from boosters who hold an affinity for the school, have a desire to be close to the programs, and to satisfy their jock-sniffing inclinations. The only difference now is that it’s legal. Athletes no longer need to have a summer ‘job’ with a local car dealer. I would be hard pressed to believe that top schools/programs have any need to directly add to that money pile. They just lean on their ‘supporters’ to be more charitable when the need arises.
There is a call to the NCAA, that looks as though they are heeding, to cap NIL money for all D1 schools across the country. What DGF and I are alluding to is the probability that those jocks sniffing donors will find ways to supplement those monies against NCAA rules.

Agreed. Of course they will. The idea I am pushing back on is that the big schools are supplementing the NIL coffers from their general funds. Not so say that they wouldn’t, just that they simply don’t need to.

Yeah, and I believe that was one of the points that ticked Willard off…he didn’t think Evans was doing enough to bring money into the program.

I was under the impression it was more about the split between football and basketball from their limited NIL resources. I've been convinced the new structure will be a benefit, although I still don't believe for a second that it's out of the quesiton that rich schools will find a way to cheat the system by contributing from their enormous income a few bucks to land top recruits.

It looks like the Buzz Williams deal is being finalized.

Looks like the new coach is Buzz Williams. Sounds like the perfect name for a coach in either the 1950's or an 80's Revenge of the Nerds type film.

Huh? My refresh didn't indicate any new posts. I thought you guys would be ahead of me.

My cousin texted me and that’s how I found out. I wanted to confirm it was true and not just the rumors. So when I saw it, I figured I would post it.

Also, I agree with your comment above. He sounds like a coach from a 50s and 60s Disney movie.

I heard the news early last evening. I visit 3 Terps basketball boards and nobody has posted an opinion of the hire. I have no idea who this guy is and if this was a good hire. Not saying posters are always right but they do present arguments to help me form an opinion.

I just read a partial article about him. Seems like a professional coach who's travelled around a bit. He's taken three times to the NCAA tournament, in 11 trips he reached the Sweet 16 four times and once made it to the Elite 8. Just on the basis of those numbers he seems like an upgrade. I don't know why he hasn't found a long term home. In the social media sphere some are calling the move from Texas A&M to Maryland a lateral move.

Thanks for this. My first impression is this is another safe pick, a guy who can get you to the tournament but has a ceiling. I was also concerned that he is a vagabond and we can't expect a real long term committment. But his record, especially at Marquette, is making me feel better.

Buzz Williams is a good coach. I’m surprised he left A&M where he graduated from (an adjunct campus). He did well at Va Tech, basically rebuilding that program. He’s not a big needle mover, but a solid basketball coach. Wondering what he will be able to do on the recruiting front in the DMV…hopefully he’ll hire a local guy with ties to the area schools.

I think this is about as good a hire as they could have hoped for, given the timing. I expect Williams to have this program competitive within 2-3 years.

I think I agree. He was even twice named SEC coach of the year. So he is good. Still, he's going to have quite a mountain to climb in the short term. Unless he can change his mind, it looks like Willard's bridge burning caused the entire roster to flee to the transfer portal.

Not too surprising, such is the way of college basketball these days. They were losing Queen, Reese, Miguel, Geronimo, regardless. Williams may have a chance of talking some of the others to stay, but he has work to do in the portal, to keep them relevant next season, and in recruiting and transfers for the following seasons. Hopefully the administration is agreeing to give him the $6M they supposedly promised Willard in their last ditch effort to get him to stay. He could get some solid talent in with $6M.

For that kind of money, I'd be willing to join the Terps. Think they're interested in someone old, slow, out of shape, and who can't shoot?

Sure, but I’ll be getting the bulk of it. I’m old, slow, out of shape, but I can still bang down the 3.

The thing with college basketball now, it’s less about recruiting and more about the transfer. Sure, if you can land Derek Queen, you set yourself up for success. But look at all the good (notice I didn’t say great) recruits MD had the last few years. They all left after a year or two. Queen is good enough to go pro, but other guys just leave for more playing time or more money. There is rarely development of players, which makes recruiting freshman much more difficult. You are better off raiding a mid major’s top scorer than bringing in a freshman who hasn’t done it at this level yet. I know MD is always in contention for the likes of a Derek Queen, but the portal is where you build a full team these days. Especially if you want to rebuild quickly. That’s where it will be interesting to see what Buzz can do.

It’s a bit of a juggling act. Transfers have become huge in building a consistent winner, but you’ve got to be bringing in quality freshman as well to keep the program moving forward. Look at Duke. They’ve made the final four with five be freshman playing big minutes.

My thought is that you recruit 3-4 big freshman each year, and use the transfer to fill in, or bring in studs in weak positions. With AAU and high level private HS programs, many of the freshman coming in are ready to go at the NCAA level.

Well, yeah, if you can recruit 4 guys that are 1st round draft picks, you can bring in that many freshman. But that’s not the norm these days. The other three teams in the final 4, Auburn has mostly seniors with one freshman. Houston and Florida have some sophomores mixed in with junior and seniors. Duke is still winning the pre-portal way, but that’s rare and will apply only to an handful of schools. It’s not working for UNC who is Duke’s arch rival and right down the street. Calipari was run out of Kentucky because he couldn’t win any longer going the freshman route. So the freshman route is going to work for less and less programs as the transfer portal gets bigger and bigger. I don’t envy any coach trying to navigate this NIL and Portal climate, but this is what Buzz Williams and these other coaches signed up for.

I think the best way for this to work is for NIL contracts to be structured in such a way to provide a two year commitment
