The 2025 Free Agency Thread

I think the whole “guys lining up to play here” narrative is blown out of proportion anyways.

#1 will always be money in some capacity.
Especially on day one of free agency. Those guys are just chasing the biggest bag. Hopefully moving forward as teams cash piles dry up and offers are down to earth and more competitive we see where playing for a contender has a bigger impact.

Fair enough to trust the front office. So lets let a vast improvement now to be expected by our offense, as the non primitive measuring stick on such a huge move like adding an elite LT. I personally don't like to count them chickens before they hatch and temper expectations, but to each his own. Again I like the move and hope we don't have to win games on the final play as much next year but I will say this, I suspect getting 13 wins (to top last year) may not be as easy as you think.

Counterpoint, I think you’re not quite grasping how much JD5 makes our offense hum no matter who is at LT. Sure Kliff will call a few more plays that demand the pocket be clean (less screens) but in the end, JD5 makes it work.

It’s not about predicting the future or setting arbitrary markers for improvement. It’s about following good processes.

Paying a reasonable trade price to pair an elite young QB with an elite pass protecting LT is about as “good process” as you can get, it’s like the holy grail of building a strong offensive foundation.

It’s not about what weaknesses Daniels can cover up—those flaws always break through against elite playoff competition even if you neutralize them schematically throughout the regular season. This raises Daniels floor AND ceiling on his rookie contract (and hopefully beyond) which is the most effective force multiplier you can apply in this league.

You’ve always been an “against conventional wisdom” dude and I respect it. You’ve been right before (for instance, they did actually rotate the LT’s last season to ease Coleman in and you advocated for that against conventional wisdom, if I remember correctly).

But there’s a massive difference between developing a serviceable 3rd round LT that Daniels can compensate for with his super powers, and actually giving him the best chance to succeed with a stone wall at his blind side. Imagine what he can do with his arm, legs, and processing power when he’s not expending mental and physical bandwidth mid-play to compensate for mediocre tackle play?

Continuing the force multiplier thing, this cascades across the entire OL as the LT doesn’t need help. That help can go elsewhere and Coleman and his potential (which you rightfully value) can move elsewhere and increase the talent and productivity of the entire line. It’s ideal.

Daniels just had a historically good rookie season and looks like an elite QB. Imagine if he had an extra half second on some of those plays. He and McLaurin are going to eat off of this trade, man. Kliff has never had elite LT play, we haven’t even seen what he can cook up when he’s not scheming around OT play.

I am glad the team did not bring Dyami Brown back. We waited 3 plus years for this guy to do ANYTHING to justify his existence and if a team with questionable management like Jacksonville wants to give him $12M based on 5 or 6 games that's up to them.

I’m sure Liam Coen had something to do with this - he saw Dyami light his team up in the playoffs and is probably excited by what he can do with him

If Quinn goes back to the big run stuffing DE concept he had in Seattle. It makes it more likely we still are in the market for Trey Hendrickson (or use pick #29 for Ezeiruaku or someone). You need a horse with a green light on the other side to attack how they want, then someone is nearby to fill holes created by them cheating. That someone would be shifted more towards the center usually but with a large run stuffing DE on the opposite side you can be more assured that containment will happen.

I always liked that concept. You've got a defense that's schemed up to accentuate specific personnel.
Good post. The more I thought about Kinlaw last night the more I thought about him simply coming here to set an edge so Wagner and Luvu can actually fill. The way Fowler would get blown 5 yards downfield on every rush play really hurt the LB's. By the way. I wouldnt hate Fowler back on the cheap as a situational pass rusher at all.

Justin Reid is great against the run. Well rounded safety. I don't know if they have interest in him. But he would be an upgrade over Chinn.
Who would be the SS then? Butler? Forrest (is he still on the roster?) Those would be tough pills to swallow--assuming we don't draft anyone. I hate the idea of HAVING to sign someone, but it feels that was with Reid.

Kelly and Allen are past their primes. I think the Vikings after the 2024 debacle of winning 13 games but losing in the wildcard round are under pressure to show they can keep the pace in the division with the Packers, Lions and Bears.

IMO it's a losing battle for them. These other teams have quarterbacks in place and Caleb Williams is likely to be much better in Year 2.

Forest is not on the roster

Hurts and Daniels are light years better than Aaron Rodgers at this point of their careers.

NY made a big mistake by not taking a quarterback last year when several were available on rookie deals to take advantage of.

I think Michael Penix is going to blow up in Atlanta and the Bucs are going to have their hands full next year in that division.
Totally agree that Rodgers would be the 4th ranked QB in the Division I just meant with the horses they have (specially on the Defensive side) that even a aging QB in Rodgers (who actually had a really good year w/the Jets) makes them a lot better then what we saw in 24’…. I could easily see them being well over .500 if they just got a legit QB

I wouldn't freak out.

I know Ron Rivera couldn't assemble a room of safeties in 4 years that could play well together for any length of time.

But most teams in the NFL can find at least competent safety play with veteran mid-tier free agents and draft picks.

I don't think Peters is hampered by the past here. In San Francisco the front office never used a #1 pick or $80M free agent slot at safety and ended up with a couple of pro bowl performers.

The fact the team didn't match or exceed a 2 year $16M deal for Jeremy Chinn I think shows that Peters and Co. don't put a premium price tag on safeties.

Tomlinson is for real who IMO some of those who love Payne among the fan base and local media think he is which is a dude who is good at playing 0-1 and stopping the run with occasional pass rush flashes.

I recall years back looking at this team's run game and rewatched with coaches tapes the games against the Giants -- I was blown away as to how Tomlinson could hold his ground against the run. though looking at PFF grades he's improved as a pass rusher but not who he once was against the run.

Dalvin Tomlinson, DT, Browns (31)

Tomlinson joined the Browns on a four-year, $57 million contract in 2023 to address their run defense woes, but his salary proved too large with Cleveland paying Deshaun Watson and Myles Garrett massive deals. He will be released after the start of the new league year on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET so the Browns can use a post-June 1 designation and push part of his cap hit into 2026. Tomlinson turned 31 last week and will be seeking his fourth team in his ninth NFL season, but he’s still a load against the run, and he’s a far better pass rusher than his 6-foot-3, 325-pound body type would suggest. Despite never topping 3.5 sacks in a season, he posted career highs with 18 QB hits and an 11.9 percent pressure rate in 2024 while playing 56.5 percent of the snaps. He should certainly have suitors.

I wonder if Bosa would be willing to come here as a situational pass rusher? Not sure he is willing to accept being a part time player yet though.

To be fair to the team, Zaccheus, Noah I. and some of these guys were street free agents or late adds to the team last offseason to fill the last few gaps on the 53.

I would think the team will bring Noah Brown back in 2025 to compete for that #3 receiver spot.

Personally, I would bring Marcus Mariota back as he really showed last year that he can play in this offense under Kliff if Daniels misses any time and helped to win both the Carolina and second Dallas games for the team.

Without Mariota, we win 10 games instead of 12 and perhaps lose in Philly in Round 1 of the wildcard or miss the playoffs as the Seahawks did.

Again, the others are replacement level players where there are options available around the league.

We desperately need to bring someone in at corner and or safety. I know it’s beating a dead horse at this point but I’m truly curious what is going on at that position. I love the fact that we took the O line and upgraded it but what I’m confused about is O line certainly wasn’t our biggest need and I would think that secondary was a bigger need overall so instead of upgrading a weakness we just double down and made a good unit great Which is awesome but what’s gonna happen when we’re on defense? Especially when our division rivals have grade A receiving threats. It seems this staff was so beat down by the lack of not being able to stop the rush that they’re throwing all their chips on the table to stop that all the while weakening the pass D

Draft is where that is coming from imo. Pretty deep at Safety in the top of the draft. And Mikey proved he play outside of necessary. I would prefer him in the slot though.

I don't see us bringing in DeMarcus Lawrence at age 33 with his injury history unless it is a one year deal for less than he is probably looking for.

The one selling point is Washington is a winning team in the same division as Dallas but I don't know another team like Detroit won't be after a specialist like this.
