The 2025 Free Agency Thread

Another facet I’d like is someone with good spatial awareness that’s used to playing with mobile qbs - ie a guy that’s good at getting open after a play breaks down.

I just want to +1 this section of your post.... it's actually a skill that some players excel at that doesn't always jump out unless you are looking for it!

PFF considers Payne elite ffs. They are a clownshow.
Oh no--Payne was atrocious this year, per PFF.

For as much hate as PFF gets (and rightfully so) they have become pretty accurate.

Yeah, PFF is certainly not the end-all-be-all but they're pretty good. There's a reason that NFL teams pay them a ton of money for analytics and reports.

From what’s remaining at edge, Dayo from the Colts at 25 yo is looking like a real good get.

Unless, of course, a Hendrickson trade is in the works……

I stand corrected on Payne and PFF. The reason I even stopped looking at that site was because of the way they graded him a couple of seasons ago. Maybe they have improved some and I should give them another shot. But i still stand by my grade on Sweat. He would immediately become the most impactful player on our DL. And I am not alone in that thought. Your beloved PFF agrees with me.

Absolutely. It’s funny, but I’ve become more aware how difficult this skill is after watching my son play HS soccer. The number of kids calling for the ball having no idea a defender is right at their back… it’s both amusing and frustrating, lol.

I hope we sign Ty Johnson, he is very underrated, we can get him on the cheap, at worst he is a good number 2 RB who can fill in as a number 1. I'm fine with drafting a RB also.

I'm a UVa guy but man, he's going into like his 12th or 13th season. He struggled staying on the field his first go round here. I can't imagine there's much gas left in the tank?
Not looking at him as a starter but a solid back up at a good price. Did a good job against Watts last year

That's fine and we can just agree to disagree. I think Sweat is overrated and is nothing special at all. His number are insanely pedestrian, including pass rush win rate, total pressures, QB hits, etc. He also benefitted from being next to much better players on the Eagles DL. He'd be fine as a rotational piece of the puzzle, but he's very far from a guy who teams have to game plan for.

If we got him under $20 AAV that would be an absolute steal--but the way money is being thrown around, I doubt any of the top DL get less than that.

Ha! I coach soccer, and you are spot on - very hard skill to teach.... it can be done, but most kids that have it came to it naturally.

Even in his career year, they just gave him a 64 grade. PFf is so down on Payne's career, than on a 980 radio show a talk show host (I think Sheehan but don't recall) centered part of the conversation around why aren't they high on Payne.
