HT used to be the hands-down best place to buy beef. It was always, always excellent quality. If it said CHOICE, it looked like PRIME and tasted like PRIME. I never bought a steak there in ten plus years that disappointed. It was my go to. Way better than Safeway. Way better than Giant. Not even comparable.

But then they got bought out by Kroger a couple years ago, and the quality dropped off quite a bit. I mean the marbling. The beef is closer to the other stores now. You really have to pay attention and study the slice before you buy it. And if you're my age, you better have your glasses on! It can still be good, but it's not automatically awesome like it used to be.

Our Shoppers left quite a few years ago, and with them went the Shoppers ads. No more Shoppers ads in the paper. They don't send us fliers either. And if that's not bad enough, if I scrounge a coupon up somewhere and try to use it here locally, they say no. What??? What do you mean, no? I'd been doing it for years. But they won't take it because there's no Shoppers in our area anymore.

Maybe I should drive out to the airport and shop there.

Agreed. That's why I usually buy beef only after I look it over and have it cut.

The only time we shop there is when there is a good sale that we can combine with the aforementioned Shoppers coupon. Yesterday we picked up some 16/20 count peeled & deveined Argentine red shrimp, in a 2lb bag for $25.99.
The Kroger's near my Mom's, in Va Beach is a beautiful store. Most of them in that area are.

I try to buy meat at butcher shops, whenever possible. The Amish market in Annapolis has a decent butcher. Wagner Meats in Mt Airy is pretty good too.

Ok, so I've been "dating". It's weird to me, but it's a guy I've known for decades. He's been divorced for a long time, and I'm a widow, so there's that. It's a long story about how we know each other. He's "key grip" on movies, TV shows, commercials & such...did the first 5 seasons of "The Walking Dead".
HE TOOK ME OUT FOR SUSHI YESTERDAY AT LUNCH. I loved it.
I told him y'all had been coaxing me to try it.

Exactly. We used to shop at HT exclusively. And they had a reputation for being high end. And they were. But they went down hill in a hurry. And the produce! It's in shambles, man. We had to switch our weekly shopping to Giant. I still go to HT for quick shopping. I like the Veteran's parking

But I'm noticing Kroger has also got some good stuff. HT is now stocking things, good things, they didn't used to carry. I'm hoping Kroger can bring them back.

I gotta warn you, that sticker is hard to get off. It won't scrub off. You need some kinda goo-be-gone to get it off clean.

I have,(had), a cast iron press, but they're a pain in the ass to clean. Sometimes I'll use a small cast iron skillet with parchment paper on the bottom, but that sucks too. SS is just what the doctor ordered.

Yes, they're really nice - especially the older ones like this one. The new ones have this industrial finish which is just ugly.

These are also super easy to store because they're basically flat and nest into each other.

And the round ones are super rare.

Made a fried oyster po' boy for lunch. Takes about ten mins. These are really really really delicious. And easy.

Toast a club roll or something similar. I highly recommend Amoroso. Amoroso takes eight mins at 350 in a toaster oven. They sell 'em at Aldi.

Heat some veg oil in a fry daddy to 375. Takes less than ten mins.

Mix up half a cup of coarse corn meal and a quarter cup of corn starch in a bowl. Add a healthy shake or two of cayenne pepper. Mix it up.

Dredge an oyster in the mix.

Place oyster in fry daddy rack. Repeat until you have half a dozen oysters in there.

Lower rack into heated oil for one minute. Lift it out.

Let them cool while you open your toasted roll and add some remoulade sauce to each side of the toasted bun. You could also use tartar sauce in a pinch.

Place fried oysters in bun. Add some salt to taste. Add a little lettuce to make your cardiologist happy. Place bun on top. Press down a bit.

Enjoy.

I love oysters in any form and that sounds off the hook.

I am going the comfort food route today. Growing up, my Kentucky-born mom would do a big pot of what she called 'soup beans'. Down here in NC they call them 'pintos'. She would basically cook them all day in a big pot with a ham hock or a chunk of country ham. I usually add some minced garlic, a couple bay leaves, and some chicken stock, serve with some cornbread. My dad would always add a big spoonful of sweet pickle relish to his, and that's the way I eat them as well. I know it sounds weird but the relish gives a nice contrast between the salty beans and broth, and the sweet tartness of the relish.

So I looked at an air fryer yesterday. Surprised to see they are much smaller than I had anticipated and will probably fit on the shelf I had targeted. So what should I be using this for? Can't say I make a lot of fries, I usually do fresh veggies and frozen meals in the microwave. Why would I put a frozen dinner in this instead of the microwave?
