The 2025 Draft Thread

What's the impact on our cap? All 21.7M?

We need to move Jon Allen now
 
We have functionally infinite money. Allen will be moved and that'll put us close to 100M in space. Our draft picks will cost us basically nothing. And if we're not adding Garrett, and not breaking the bank for a WR, where are we gonna spend the 81Mish we'll still have left after moving Allen and adding Deebo?

Sure we gotta resign our guys but none of these dudes is a 20M a year guy. Wagner, Chinn, Ertz, Mariota, and Fowler prolly the costliest guys, and even then I imagine AP is gonna set a reasonable price point for em and if they don't want it, let em walk.

And even if things got tight, no biggie, just rework a couple contracts. Plus any major new signings are gonna be backloaded in terms of cap costs, like if we sign Osa to, say, a 4 year 40M deal it's probably got 2 void years on the back end and costs us like 2M in cap this year. (I have no idea what Osa's market will look like, I'm spitballing).
 
Not a huge fan of the deal but a 5th for Deebo and he is in the last year of his deal and will probably be in great shape this upcoming season playing his guts out for a new deal. It will be interesting to see how AP deals with him if he extends Deebo and for how much and hopefully no more than 2 years.

Well, for Commanders fans through the Rivera years, I think we are leery of dudes bringing in guys they "knew" from past stays. AP bringing in Deebo is like that. However, this is new regime; that means, let's look at how Fowler and DQ worked out (dudes bringing in guys they "knew") or Dorance Armstrong coming in, or Ertz who knew Kingsbury.

So basically, this new regime knows how to bring in good guys who can make serious contributions, period. Deebo for a 5th, and the Commanders absorbing his salary which they can afford without greatly impacting them - this is a good move. I don't think there should be too much debate. The scale isn't all that close. I am not saying it is risk-free, but if you think a 5th round pick is risk-free, you are probably insane - because you should be a GM and your team should be winning the Super Bowl every year. When you reasonably compare the risk, the Deebo trade makes sense to me. The biggest advantage to keeping the 5th is reduced injury risk compared to Deebo, a legitimate concern, but when you talk about Deebo's true ability compared to that, and his fit into a Kingsbury/JD offense? I don't see a strong argument for this being bad.

SNO, did I say it was a bad deal? No, I didn't. It's more of a positive than a negative.

I quoted you but it was more of a post in the flow of the thread - which your post was kind of in. I wasn't as much directly responding to most of what you said, maybe just the first couple of words about not being a "huge fan" of the deal. Personally I do feel a slight worry about AP having some Deebo blinders on, but I hope that the way he has handled the other players I discussed follows here. There's a degree of luck in everything too; injury could completely dictate whether this works or not.

I wonder if AP keeps him on a "prove it" 1-year rental given age / injury history / cap space for this team.

That was a ? that I posted too in my response. Personally, I think that AP lets Deebo prove himself on a 1 year deal and he absorbs Jon Allen's cap space this year.

The way I see the board here kinda irritates me, so I don't hang like I use to on ES. I also just haven't been around the computer much lately. I definitely miss the ol' ES Draft crew conversations though. Steve and Sip ever pop up around anywhere?

Drafting a WR high is absolutely still on the table and a huge need. Offensive weapons in general is a huge need. Terry had a great year, for sure, but Debo is a slot at best. He's obviously our #2, but that's not a positive. We have an unstoppable QB that can hit guys in stride half way down the field. He needs weapons like he had at LSU.
 
Watching some O lineman.

Donovan Jackson looks solid. Wondering what his arm length is? if its decent length don't see why he can't play LT in the NFL.

Trapilo ditto at RT and played with someone of a mean streak. Mirrors really well.

The one who hit me though at guard was Rutledge. He's a people mover and stout in pass protect.
 
This fits someone like Henderson among others but also even Skattebo -- who can play in space and is violent in his cuts.

I 100% agree with this. Two factors I struggle with though are prioritization and… I’m not quite sure what to call it, but maybe causation?
Prioritization as in - do we put DL and OL upgrades, as well as corner (we could use a starter and we have to improve our depth) over weapons? In other words, does improving our run game/pass pro/defense help Daniels more than improving our weapons?

“Causation” - did Daniels scramble so much because our receivers weren’t winning quickly or more so because of a middling OL? Did our ground game struggle because defenses didn’t need to respect our weapons (sans Terry) and could load the box? Was it more a product of deficiencies on the OL, or sub par running backs? Did our run D suck because we had to manufacture a pass rush, while protecting our secondary, leaving us more susceptible to the run?

And of course, that’s leaving off schematic stuff (and lots of other nuance). Point being, I have a lot of questions. On the bright side, our FO and coaches probably know the answers to those questions, and the bottom line solution is to just try to get better everywhere we can. It’s a breath of fresh air having faith in this group to be able to do just that (or at least make significant strides in that direction).
