I like Chinn as the box safety better than Martin--I think we can upgrade from Martin...
 
Maybe, but like a number of our youngsters, I'm hoping we're just seeing the beginning of Martin's potential. This was his first year starting (I don't think any of us should count Rivera's final year or hold it against a player.)

Hopefully, he takes that next step.

The Washington Commanders have given veteran defensive tackle Jonathan Allen permission to seek a trade, a team source said Tuesday.

Allen, 30, has spent his entire career with Washington, which selected him with the 17th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Washington’s decision to allow Allen to seek a trade likely means the franchise is moving on from the two-time Pro Bowler. The Commanders are coming off an appearance in the NFC Championship Game in their first season under head coach Dan Quinn and had a Rookie of the Year at quarterback in Jayden Daniels.
 
Hard to imagine there being many suitors for Allen... I think most teams would just wait for us to cut him....
 
Allen is done here.. It'll be interesting to see if there is a market for him... I wouldnt be surprised if we can get some trade comp for him. Above average DTs are still tough to find, especially for teams with a lot of holes on D.
 
JP Finlay just on thinking Allen more likely to be released than traded. that's my guess too.

They don't really have anything cooking at DT. No pass rush or run stopping ability right now. So there is a need for both.

At least judging by PFF scores, he's not a disaster against the run.

Easier to find run stopping DTs than 3 technique penetrator types. You can likely sign Olu and then add a run stopper too like BJ Hill on the cheap.

It seems clear though that Dallas doesn't want to lose Olu so wonder if he even hits the market



 
its not about just DTs for stopping the run. You need DEs that can set/ hold the edge (we dont have those) and you need a quick LB to fill holes when they appear (we only have one of those). We need an upgrade in both spots.. i like Wagner but he is slow, hope they can upgrade in off season
 
All indications seem to be Wagner will be back. He's still great against the run but doesn't have sideline to sideline speed. They can use a will type LB with range.

DT's weren't hot againt the run last year but agree edge was way worse. I think they can fill both masters.

Though having a DT who can collapse the pocket is often a game changer. Allen and Payne alas weren't hot at stopping the run or collapsing the pocket.

If Olu is anywhere as good as his numbers indicate at collapsing the pocket, I am on board. Durable -- doesn't miss games. I believe good locker room guy. Will see if he hits the market though.

 
If Osa does hit the open market, i would think one major benefit is that Quinn would have "dibs" since he coached him recently

I question PFF's run defense metric--it also said Jalen Carter and Jordyn Davis were poor run defenders too

Agreed, PFF grades are interesting but should be taken with a grain of salt. But as far as Osa, it seems everything I read touts his ability to be disruptive on passing downs. I included another article that seems to capture how he is viewed, at least by the talking heads:

Of Odighizuwa, Bowen wrote that he is "A disruptive defender who can bring energy and impact-play ability to the defensive front, Odighizuwa had 4.5 sacks this season. His 30 pressures were tied with the Jets' Quinnen Williams for the second most among defensive tackles. Odighizuwa fits best as a 3-technique and can be a pass-rushing threat in nickel fronts."

He would be a great addition to the DL rotation, but is he too similar to J Newton? Both are primarily 3-techs right? Spotrac has his market value at $21 mil per year. Is a DT who doesn't help us improve our rush defense and who seems very similar to a young prospect we already have, the best approach as far as asset management?

With Allen leaving and Payne on borrowed time, DT needs to be addressed, I just don't know if the $21ish mil price tag for Osa (Spotrac's proejction) is the best way for us to approach it. Seems like he would have a similar role to J Newton. FWIW, Osa's PFF run grade in 2024 was 50.8. Much worse.

BJ Hill is intriguing. I read he played a lot of 3 tech in Cincy, but could also handle inside guard.

Poona Ford is also intriguing. More of a traditional NT. "From a statistical standpoint, last year was arguably Ford's first or second-best season of his career. He received an 85.3 2024 season PFF defensive grade in addition to a 78.8 run defense grade. Ford had 23 pressures, 21 run stops, three sacks, and a career-high seven QB hits last season." Spotrac has his market value at 1 yr, 6.6 mil.

If we signed Osa at 20ish AAV (hopefully less than that), but balanced the position out with Ford's affordable deal and Newton's rookie contract, along with the anticipated shedding of Payne's contract after 2025, I'd be OK with that. As with anything else we do, if AP signs off on it, I'm good with it.
 
20M+ for an average DT from the team you used to coach sounds too much like Ron Rivera to me.

Good thing we have AP making the decisions.

I get the tapping into your previous team sounds like Ron -- but Ron in FA would mostly sign JAGs including from his old team. Going top market for players who are among the best at their position -- IMO is very UnRon.

To do this like Ron would be signing someone lik Jonathan Ballard for a couple of million and say problem solved -- not the dude that most say is the best FA available at the spot.

Not sure where the average DT is coming from?

Had a better year under Quinn. But for all those here who don't want him -- good news on that front, I keep reading that Dallas is trying hard to keep him.
