The 2025 Draft Thread

Another OT that's growing on me is Ozzy Trapilo Boston College. He may be more of a OG type though.

Since we are picking low (in the first round) we are not likely to get any of the super elite blue chip prospects so it's okay that the draft doesn't have them. What we do need are really solid trench players on both sides of the ball. I'm assuming that's what they mean by M&P. The unsexy positions, guards, defensive tackles, run stoppers, etc. that's what we need most.

On that note, I am a little leery about reaching for a left tackle in a left tackle poor draft. I don't mind a developmental one that we can groom into a starter, but I don't know that I want a first rounder that we will feel compelled to plug in (unless Peters is like... Damn! We got our guy!) Then again, just to disagree with myself, there are more than thirty good players in even a poor draft, so you should be able to find starter worthy player at 29.

The interesting thing about the left tackles is the ones that are rated the highest (Campbell and Banks) are the guys at real risk of ending up as guards while the true left tackles (Simmons and Conerly) are seen as being behind them
 
That is interesting.
 
Which probably means that all of them are somewhat questionable.
 

If you’re looking for Eagles copycats, look no further than the strength this year’s class carries in its edge rushers and defensive tackles. Philly, of course, was so loaded on its defensive front this year that it could withstand the retirement of Fletcher Cox, absorb big-ticket free agent Bryce Huff not working out, and still have the position group dominate Super Bowl Sunday with six sacks on Mahomes.

The good news for everyone else? This year’s class, both with its edge rushers...

“If you really go study the organizations that have had success, when they have their quarterback, they spend like drunken sailors in the draft with draft capital on defensive front guys,” McShay says. “The Chiefs, the [Baltimore] Ravens, the Eagles, the [Buffalo] Bills—there’s a reason that these organizations stay at the top. You got one guy that can make up for a lot on offense, so you better have a great defense to match that quarterback, and that’s the recipe.

“There’s opportunity for the [New England] Patriots, the [Denver] Broncos, the [Atlanta] Falcons. This would be the year, if I’ve got three or four picks in the first three rounds, I’m using two or three of them on defensive linemen, because I don’t know if I’m going to have another opportunity to get difference-makers in rounds two and three in future years like I did this year.”

The edge-rusher group starts with the aforementioned Carter and Walker, but goes well beyond those two hybrids. Carter’s Georgia teammate Mykel Williams and Texas A&M’s Shemar Stewart look like they were built in pass-rusher labs, with all the requisite size and length, if not quite the polish. Tennessee’s James Pearce Jr. isn’t quite as big as them, but may be better on tape. Marshall’s Mike Green, Ohio State’s Jack Sawyer and J.T. Tuimoloau, A&M’s Nic Scourton, LSU’s Bradyn Swinson, Boston College’s Donovan Ezeiruaku …

All merited mention for the first round and close to it from McShay, and he was afraid he was forgetting some—“I’ve got 20 guys I think are worth drafting in the first three rounds, and a few guys after that, on the edge. It’s absurd."


And the defensive tackle class, led by Michigan’s Mason Graham, might be even better.

“How I do it, the grading scale, is ‘potential starters’—I’m not saying slam-dunk starter, but these guys have the chance to be potential starting D-tackles,” Jeremiah says. “Last year, I had 12 in the draft. This year, I had 20. It’s literally twice as many guys. You got different fits. But I don’t remember a year where this many guys were over 300 pounds. It’s not like we’re talking, Oh we got some penetrators here. There are a boat load of 300+ pounders."

...After that, Graham’s Michigan teammate, Kenneth Grant, Oregon’s Derrick Harmon, and Ole Miss’s Walter Nolen are good bets for the first round, and Toledo’s Darius Alexander, Florida State’s Joshua Farmer, South Carolina’s TJ Sanders, Texas’s Alfred Collins and Ohio State’s Tyleik Williams were mentioned by Jeremiah and McShay as being in the top-50 mix.

“Going into the third round, I got 16 guys,” McShay says.

So, again, hopeful copycats should be pumped.

Medicals at the combine will be crucial for every prospect but most important for several key players, such as East Carolina cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. and Notre Dame cornerback Benjamin Morrison, who are coming off injuries.

But Simmons might have the most on the line. He was making a strong case to be OT1 over the first month of the season until he suffered a non-contact patella injury. Each team’s medical staff will get an opportunity to examine the knee and get a better understanding of the injury, rehab and prognosis. According to a league source, he is expected to have a private workout for teams in April, before the draft.

You should spend time taking a look at Conerly. Decent chance he is there at #29 and he would be hard to pass on. I don't know if I've seen anyone state that they love him as a prospect but everyone seems to like him. His issues are that he is a little shorter than what you typically want to see in a tackle, he needs to gain strength and he is still learning the fine arts of the LT position but he is athletic, has the length, showed noticeable jumps in level of performance and has the intangibles.

I don't know if he'll ever become an All Pro or Pro Bowler but he would be fantastic value at #29 even if he were to become just a league average LT
 
I think Conerly would be a fine get at #29 (if there still on the draft board) if we don't sign Alaric Jackson from the Rams in free agency (if available). I've heard people say we won't sign Jackson. No one knows that until free agency gets going.

I'm one of the guys who doesn't think we will go sign Alaric Jackson due to the character concerns. Again, it's telling that a smart organization like the Rams with $38M in cap room didn't already extend him. Buyer beware
 


I don't know that I want us to go RB. But, if it were another team, I don't hate Omarion Hampton as the 29th overall pick. I think he looks great. What is the highest that a team with Adam Peters in the personnel department has taken a RB?
 
As long as they don't draft 2nd and 3rd rounder busts in the first like our last guy I'll be pretty happy no matter who we get.

But I'm thinking DL first or OL depending on who is there.

Didn’t want to look at any of the drafts where he was just a scout with the pats or broncos. So google got me:

In 2014 he became Denver’s Assistant director of college scouting and in 2016 the Director. Only RB drafted then was
2016 rd 4 Devontae booker

From 2017-2023 with the 49ers, where he probably had the most say:
2017 rd 4 Joe Williams
2021 rd 3 Trey sermon
2022 rd 3 Tyrion Davis-price

It would appear round 3-4 is where the teams he was part of drafted their RBs. That was mostly true when he was a scout too. I think there was one selected in round two and a round one (knowshon Moreno). Hard to say if that’s based off of the play callers preference like shanahan or team drafting philosophy. If I were a betting man I’d say we wouldn’t grab one until the third at the earliest. I could see us skipping this year as well.

WIth the great RB depth in this draft, AP will be able to select off his draft board filling team needs. I agree that chances are a RB will be selected in the 3rd or 4th.
While APs RBs drafted isn't an exciting list, I am still really hoping he does grab one in this draft and not real late on day 3

Skattebo IMO is a stud. I get the obsession with speed some here have. I have it too. But I don't think for example Robinson's issue is that he's a power back. IMO his issue is that he's a pedestrian at best back period. So while I prefer speed, I'd make an exception for Skattebo. He's a baller-tone setter. Great hands. Breaks tackles with the best of them. Better pass protector, pass catcher, on and on and on over Robinson.

they did trade for McCaffrey so I gather RB is high on Peters' list potentially.

Hampton is unbelievable. Great pass catcher. Great pass protector. Great RB. Some I notice define him more as a power back because he's good at breaking tackles and moving the chains. But he has plenty of speed-burst and can hit some homeruns, too. Some think he will run in the the low 4'4's at the combine. If he does am doubting he falls to 29.
