The 2025 Free Agency Thread

Garrett is also coming off a 4-13 season and at 29/30 wants to win something during his career.

If anyone can work the cap and get him under contract it's Roseman.

I don’t see how Philly can afford Garrett on the cap. He’s going to want to be the highest paid defensive player in the league.

They make heavy heavy use of option bonuses and void years to create small cap hits early on. They defer a lot of the cap hit in future years and they make the bet that the cap will keep rising.

We inked CB Bobby Price yet another CB with size. I assume him at 6'3 is a physical corner. We kept BSJ. Added Mike Davis. Cut bean pole. Added Lattimore. Added Bobby Price. APs preference for big CBs is clearly a thing. Sure we drafted Sainristil but that was to play slot of course.

This is the point. But it doesn't mean we're 1 or 2 moves away. Yes Jayden is a force multiplier, but it doesn't mean we need to panic as though 2025 is the closing window. The dynamics around the team are going to change this year. Schedule, Roster, 19 games of Jayden on film... factors that will effect the outcome of 2025. The point is we should feel confident, but many times fans look at a team as 'progress' by moving to the next step. I don't think that's fair as we have not been building 'up' to an NFC Championship appearance. We made a run. A step 'back' next year is not a failure.

I mean, we were one game away from the Super Bowl, had a million fumbles, and the NFC championship game didn't feel out of reach until the 4th quarter. We may not be one or two impact players away. But, we may be 1 to 2 impact players, several depth players, and a draft class away. We destroyed the number 1 seed in the NFC and played the Super Bowl champs better than anyone else this season, since they started their winning streak.

not wrong...

and you're not going to get me to complain about this season :)

Yep. We had our worst game of the year at the worst time.

I think that we all agree that our roster could use a talent infusion, but recency effect is making people erase all the good this team did all year.

The NFL, from year to year, is so unpredictable.

Yes, all of what you wrote is 100% true, and I would even add the NFCCG is a big "?" for me, in terms of its result. Way too many critical plays affected by zebras.

All that said, though, nothing is guaranteed in 2025. The Eagles construction didn't happen overnight; it has had an architect for many years who set this team up to win for the next few years with some level of likelihood. Our team does NOT have the features required for that, as of right now:
1) too many FAs with expiring contracts, and some of them particularly critical in this year's success

2) 1-year track record. What happens next year in terms of adjustments by US and by THEM (rest of the league)?

3) Offensive success featured a league-high number of "scrambles" and it wasn't close.

That is a gigantic jump between 1 and 2 and beyond. That is a red-flag on sustainability for a lot of reasons.

4) Durability and injury concerns. This team had a couple of bad injuries but it could have been much worse. Next year, it may be.

5) This is probably a big one. We are essentially asking ourselves, can the Commanders be a tier-1 team next year; compete at the doorstep of the SB, as a legit contender. They proved themselves as a legit contender in the playoffs. Nothing takes away from that. However, for year-to-year predictable success as a tier-1 team, I do think you have to blowout or handily beat the teams that you "should" in general (not perfect of course). For example, I do think the Commanders should have handily beaten the Cowboys in that first game to give me a good feeling for sustainability. We say "division rivals" but the only division rival that gave the Eagles real trouble I think was the Commanders. They had 0 trouble with the others (I think? I didn't have time to check it but I do remember two trouncings of the Cowboys at least).

You'll note I did not put "Strength of Schedule" only because I think that is probably a bit overblown. I could be wrong there, but the times when SoS matters more is not when you are hoping to contend for a Super Bowl. Strength of Schedule really matters when you are in the 2/3 tier of football teams; those are teams contending for playoff spots. What we are talking about here is how likely the Commanders are for sustaining the level of success they had this year. That is TIER-1 level success.

I would say it is unlikely in general, however going into this year it was significantly LESS LIKELY they would make the NFCCG. So, that's where we are. Can AP and DQ make magic happen again, or will some of the factors above prove to be too much to overcome? There are clear coaching and FO issues for this to work.

Good post. I wouldn't use the Cowboys as a benchmark though for two reasons.

1. Division games are often wonky. They just are. You see it all over the league every year.
2. In 1991, one of the best teams in NFL history, a team that sported an undefeated record and had shut out multiple teams met a division opponenent with a sorry, losing record and was upset.

So sometimes. divisional foes just match up well against you. Sometimes, they are extra motivated. In this case, I think they knew Quinn and Whitt inside out which gave our weak defense a huge disadvantage (no similar excuse for why our offense and Daniels in particular seems to struggle against them,) but in any case, I just wouldn't use Dallas as the measuring stick even if it was the biggest disappointment of the season.

I will say that other than Dallas, we did beat everyone we "should" beat. I'll also add that we were a 4-13 team so there were few teams we "should have" beaten. At the beginning of the year, every game we won was an upset. We also took out a fair number of teams we should have lost to and were very competitive with most of the big boys.

The 1991 Redskins lost that game vs. a very good Dallas team that was a year away from being great. They did get trounced in playoffs vs. Detroit (who was a very good team that year and played us in the NFCCG). You may be thinking of the 1989 team that gave Dallas its one victory. We didn't make the playoffs that year and we had that game and I think Gerald Riggs fumble vs the Eagles to blame for not making it.

I agree but if we are tier-1, I am not sure this logic is quite as applicable. Also note, the 1991 team lost to one team only for real, the Cowboys. That is the same Cowboys that played them tight early in the season, and then went on with largely the same team to win multiple Super Bowl teams. Two tier-1 teams are allowed to compete that way.

This year's Cowboys team: are they tier-1 with that QB? No way. However, your other point about Quinn and Whitt? Absolutely true. That could be the circumstance, because those two games are definite outliers as you said. Every other game kind of looks better. I don't think in the NFL you should be expected, even as "Tier-1," to blow out every team. You do need to blow out a team here and there. I think the Commanders did that enough, probably, to be a tier-1. The main blemish is the Cowboys game, and maybe the Whitt/Quinn thing explains it well enough.

I am not focused on their previous year/record; I think you throw that out if we are considering what their bar is next year, or what their potential is. Again, year-to-year results are NEVER a guarantee, especially with all of those factors at play - but... they did play like a tier-1 if we are going to give that exception to the Cowboys games - which seems fair in a long season.

Quick (related) aside: Did you catch Dak's comments recently? It was interesting, because he basically used their play against the Commanders to absolutely say the Cowboys will be competing for a Super Bowl next year. The reason I know, reading between the lines, is he backed up the statement with something like "Watched the NFC CG and seeing those teams, I know we can be there next year based on how we played them, those are our division rivals." So, I looked it up, and they got *BLOWN OUT* by the Eagles twice this year. Again, tier-1 - the Eagles are a Cowboys division foe. However, your reasoning about Quinn/Whitt is definitely solid. Maybe we can use it to explain it (of course there will be other factors like seasonal timing, health of teams, etc, but that first Cowboys game really sticks in my craw; we needed that win and that game was primed to be a W).

I think if people are wondering if we will be aggressive, the Lattimore trade is probably instructive. I think that is solid evidence that if we think we have a chance to go deep in the playoffs, we will move aggressively to fill perceived needs. That move cost us draft picks and the salary cap hit is quite significant.

With Scherff likely to be cut, and yeah he's older but if we could strike a good 2 year deal, would you roll with it. 2 year with an opt out in year one, somewhere around 8 million guaranteed. Probably not enough for Scherff but I have no angst for him leaving the prior shit hole to only get paid by another.

If you think he is better than Allegretti and will start that sounds decent. By contrast if it is a quality depth add I would rather get a player like Patrick Mekari who is a good swing Tackle and a good swing Guard.

Best way to improve this team is improving the lines.

Yes, other spots are need areas as well, but if you have a dominant pass rush your corners look a lot better and you can sign mid level players to play behind them.

On offense Daniels longevity is tied to health. We simply need better, stronger players up front to give him that wall.

Running backs? Yeah Henry and Barkley are great unicorns, but putting good backs behind a mean front to me beats risking a lot of guaranteed money at the position with the highest attrition rate.

With Cosmi rehabbing into 2025 we will have no choice but to address the OL early.

Rumor that Aaron Rodgers could be moving to the Giants as his release by Jets pending.

Don’t the Giants understand going down that route will keep them behind the Eagles and Washington for years to come?

At some point you need to invest in a young passer that actually turns out.

"Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake."

would definitely prefer the giants getting him or Russell Wilson over Stafford.

He is a solid at best player at this point in his career

Is he better than what we have is the question and the cost benefit analysis. We're gonna need some solid at best players on the o line.
