The 2025 Free Agency Thread

I think as far as building, roster, talent, etc etc....goes, the big difference between us and the Eagles is the QB position. Hurts is not a difference maker, he is not a force multiplyer. He is best when the passing game is a compliment to the immense talent around him. It's not that he doesn't hit a big pass or two during the course of games, but that offense does not go through Hurts's arm.

If we are operating on the assumption that we need a roster as stacked with talent as Philly then it is going to be a couple offseasons at least until you can make enough necessary upgrades logistically speaking, and that is also based on the hope/luck that every single acquisition you get through the draft & FA pans out. the way you planned.

Because of JD5, we are going to get to places with less overall talent than the majority of NFL teams can, but the talent added will make it more likely they can seal the deal and get to the championship.

All that is to say, I don't think AP is necessarily going to blow through the cap space signing/trading for vets on the decline of their careers unless he feels this team has already done enough to build themselves for something more sustained first.

I agree with this, mostly. We may do a Wagner type signing for Khalil Mack, because the fit is so good and he is still playing so well. I don't think we are going to spend a bunch of money on older or declining players elsewhere. Ideally we get guys that are in their prime, or can grow with Jayden. That's part of why I like Higgins. He is 26.

Also, I think it is pretty great that both Godwin and Higgins got to watch Daniels play super well while beating their current teams last year.
 
One of the things that I try to keep in mind was that Adam Peters was not the GM in San Francisco. Using the strategy that SF used to assemble their roster as a template or as a clue may or may not be definitely applicable. He was highly involved no doubt, but…

I wholly agree on Daniels--he is not AN answer at QB, he is THE answer. Side note: I find it so cute that Eagles fans think Hurts is a better QB...
Daniels is a rising tide--he will elevate all boats.

However, looking at the roster, on offense, we won 12 games with not much supporting Terry--I think we all agree on that. On the OL, I think they can improve from Wylie and Allegretti, for starters. We also need to find a 1-year replacement for Cosmi, while he recovers. So that's three OL starters, depending on what they think of Coleman too. For skill positions, we still have Ekler for another year, but I think McNichols and Rodriguez will be gone. I would like to retain Dyami Brown--I don't think we need Deebo Samuel, D. Brown can do everything he does, at this point, and cheaper. Robinson will be here for another year, I don't think they upgrade from him this year, as the starter anyway. Ertz is another question. I think they resign him, but was last year a dead-cat bounce? Will Sinnot replace him? I am fine letting Zaccheaus and N. Brown walk--they're really down-roster options who should be easily replaced. McCaffery is another question--I have no idea what we really have in him.

On defense, DL is the most glaring need. I think Jon Allen is gone, and we get ~$16m in savings that better used elsewhere. We need a DE across from Armstrong, who I thought was really underrated. Bring back Fowler--he did fantastic in his situational role. We need another DT or two. Will Johnny Newton get better? He did not show as much as I would have liked. Ironically, after years of inept neglect from Rivera, we're good at LB, minus some depth. Bring back Bobby, see what they have in Magee. Other than that, no need for many upgrades, if any. In the secondary, I love me some Mikey Sanristil, he is a stud, already. Bring back Noah Ig..ig...big...one... as a 4th CB. Give BSJ a flash light and a can of roach spray and send him down to storage room B. Is Lattimore on the decline? Either way we need another starting-level CB. Resign Chinn--he's a priority. I'd love to upgrade from Martin, but that's probably not going to happen this year.

This doesn't include any depth additions. So while, we aren't overturning 2/3rds of the roster again, there is a lot of work to be done here if we are to close the gap on the Eagles.

Not just JD, but what Quinn has built here. There are SO many players who rave about Dan Quinn--Wagner came here because of him. Parsons would, if given the opportunity.

That's what I think gets overlooked the most.

In the past, NO ONE wanted to come here. We weren't winning, our owner was an asshat, and the culture was beyond toxic.

Now, we have arguably the best QB in the NFC, we got the the NFC title game, we have money to spend, a completely new culture, and that owner is halfway around the globe. IMPACT players - not just guys looking for playing time - are going to want to come here. It's so refreshing.

Because he was lying and I lost all respect for him. When he signed his deal it was front loaded, per his request. I agree with this 100% . . . the Redskins team doctor told him he didn't think it looked bad, but to see his own doctor as he was not qualified to diagnose it . . . he chose not to . . . that is 100% on him. This was a MONEY GRAB and it worked for him. I cannot stand Trent Williams because of it. As his contact renewal got closer, he was much more injured. Seems like the same thing is going on in San Fran now. HE wan't smore money. He held out and then missed most of the year once he came back. another money grab is what he wants!! F - Trent Williams!!

The other thing that makes me wary of some of these WR signings/trades is that we are a rising team. We want to build a long term winner. Do we really think the best way to do that is to acquire someone else's fading star? I just don't think we need guys who are running on fumes or who are little more than one year rentals. I want players Daniels grows with and builds chemistry with. In other words, do we really want a player another team is looking to shed because they don't think he's worth his contract anymore?

Well, we are allowed to make more moves in future years 😁
And given that it will be difficult to fill every single hole with a young player this year, why not get a solid veteran in there for a couple of years until we find a younger replacement? I don’t think anybody regrets signings like Bobby Wagner, and Ertz.

It depends, and this is where true talent evaluators come in.

I know he was a free agent and not a trade but the same principle applies, saquon barkley was deemed not worthy of a second contract by the giants and let walk for no compensation and he becomes the mvp for a division rival.

We need peters and company to be like the eagles and be right more often than not about who still has something to contribute and who doesn't and also get good value in those deals and well be a superbowl contender every year.

So far they couldn't have had a much better start on that front and God willing it will continue.

Yeah I made that comment before. A lot of people are posting as if Adam Peters was the decision maker in San Francisco. We really don't know yet what his true philosophy really is.

That's a good counter and fair. It'd be interesting to see where Saquon's star really was. I think it was a lauded signing, but maybe not. Maybe he was being looked at like Deebo as someone who was once great, but now is a risk.

This may be a sacrilegious thought, but, do you think Cooper Dejean is better than Mikey Sainristil and Ben Sinnott?
I wonder. I really like Mikey, don't get me wrong, but I'm not sure he is at Cooper's level, or that we didn't need that extra bit too, this year, more than we needed whatever we got out of Ben Sinnott + Mikey.

Hard to even write the above with how much I like Mikey, but I turn the emotions off for this kind of thinking.

As a pure slot corner, DeJean is definitely the better player. Who knows if he can play outside though and if he brings the type of leadership Mikey brings? When looking at the trade with PHI, people never factor in the Seattle pick we got in the 3rd for some reason. That was real value we gave away. Matt Goncalves went one pick after that pick and guys like Zinter, Puni, Liufau, Tykee Smith, Jalen McMillan and Jalyx Hunt all went after that pick. All those guys are currently players who would go well ahead of Sinnott in a redraft

On a sidenote, AP should have probably taken the Fiske instead of Newton or gotten the haul the Panthers got from the Rams for that pick (including their 2nd this year)
