Super Bowl or Branding/Name Change?

Bethesda Magazine was the name of the below site for many, many years. Then one day, the geniuses decided to change the name to make it more compatible with Montgomery County coverage. So they changed the name to MC360.

MC360 sucks. It's a stupid name. And they realized it. Eventually.

So...

A year or two later, they REBRANDED AGAIN AS BETHESDA TODAY.

Much better.

The implication here is it's okay to change a name twice in a short period if you screwed up and your current name sucks.

Anyway. Here is an article celebrating the game tomorrow. This celebration took place at Clarksville High School. There's a date error in the article. See if you can find it. :D

Interestingly, Clarksville isn't even in Montgomery County. It's not even in Redskins territory. It's Howard County and Ravens territory.

I think the ownership has been smart in keeping the door open. If there really was a fanbase revolt against the name with no coming back then you have to give yourself room to alter course. Even if the plan is to replace the name, you don't tell anyone until you have your ducks in a row. You want to do this right especially after it's been done wrong twice and the fan base has suffered through both cluster-effs.

So, I don't think we'll hear anything until they are ready to make a move.

This is why I truly believe there is a ZERO percent chance the C word is here to stay. Until they come out and give us a definitive answer. If that day comes and they announce it is here forever, I will have a hard time staying a fan of this franchise.

The identity of Commanders is nothing I think I'll ever connect with the team I love. Like MTH said above, maybe I just need more time. But hopefully that decision never has to even be made.

And the argument of that the jersey sales couldn't go higher?!? That's silly. Those bandwagon fans aren't leaving if the brand gets corrected - a rebrand done correctly has NO downside. Staying does.

“Those bandwagon fans aren't leaving if the brand gets corrected”

The bandwagon fans will leave as soon as they spy a new shiny object. Hence the term: bandwagon. They don’t give a shit about the brand either way, you do.

The new generation of fans that hopefully are building into a core Washington fanbase wouldn’t be here if they gave a shit about a rebrand because Commanders is what they know.

And I say this as a fellow Redskin dinosaur.

If they are convinced fans will eventually *accept* Commanders, why wouldn't they simply say 'it's not changing' - as they did emphatically when asked about 'Redskins'?

Why drag it out when dragging it out is clearly unpopular with the fanbase?

I'll keep saying it... when you pay $6 billion for a NFL franchise, to a certain extent, you are going to do what YOU prefer. If they think the name is stupid and hate it, it will be replaced. If they don't, they won't.

I think they went bankrupt. Are there any Hooters out there anywhere?

(This post could revive the Daily Babe)

They certainly do. I was in Tampa / Clearwater last spring - my buddy (old Redskins fan) was getting married. They're still there! Not that I went in there, mind you.

Daily Babe? It's on you. :p

<laughing> Okay you got a legitimate real life LOL out of me on that one

Win the SB this year and change the name to the Champions during the SB parade, IMO.

The name now is terrible. But I grew up a Redskins fan not because of the name but because they were my local team. Hometown pride. So I want this team to win. In a perfect world winning does not impact the much needed change of the name. I saw where when the Texans played the titans last month the titans wore the old Houston Oiler uniforms and it got me thinking, if Dan ever did just move the Redskins to St Louis and kept the name, history and uniform and DC got an expansion team where would my loyalties go and the answer is the expansion team.

If winning does close the book the name change, so be it. I certainly wouldn’t root for the winning to stop just to change Dan’s last FU. I still have not bought anything with Commanders on it. I did buy a mini helmet to add to the collection but the helmet is okay. It should have our old tri stripes at least but I don’t hate it. My wife did buy me a commanders sweater for Xmas last month and for her I started wearing it game day starting with the Falcons game soooooooooooo there’s that.

I thought they might offer to let Snyder continue if he moved the franchise to London. I wonder if it was ever considered?

If so, the discovery of the double books probably ended it. I can't imagine the League was happy about Snyder stealing from them.
