A Historical Look at the Origins of Extremeskins

So I'm sitting last row in 242, and guess who's sitting directly behind me? Colin Powell. One of DS's guests. He politely nodded, smiled, and acknowledged us. Pretty cool.

So we're sitting on the visitors side, 200 level, probably row 8. As I recall, if you can't get home side, then row 8 on the visitors side is best. You're under cover and you can still see plenty of sky.

It's a Cowboys game. And Travis has to go take a leak. Then after a while, he comes back and says, "Mark, look at my hand." His right hand - the third knuckle was jammed past where it was supposed to be, like by an inch. "I gotta go the the doc, man. I gotta get that pushed back."

"What happened?"

He tells me. He went to the head, but the lines are ridiculous. But he knows the lines are shorter on the home side, so he quickly walks around to that side, and sure enough, the lines are shorter. So he's waiting in line, and there's a Cowboys fan there, pretty drunk. But he's talking shit. Kind of your normal loud obnoxious visiting fan stuff. And Travis is talking back, and they're going back and forth. But this guy is pretty animated. This guy is behind Travis in line. So now it's Travis' turn at the urinal. And so unzips. And he's going. And the Cowboys fan is still talking loudly, talking shit. Then he pushes Travis' shoulder while he's talking.

There's an unwritten rule regarding opposing fans. You don't touch the opposing fan. Eagles fans know this very well. But, apparently, Cowboys fans, not so much.

And when he did that, nudging Travis' shoulder, Travis got a little pee on his fingers.

So Travis calmly finishes, puts his gear away, zips up. Turns around.

BAM!

Knocks him clean out. The guy is flat on his back. Unconscious.

"Dude! Go! Just go!" is what all the Redskins fans in the bathroom were advising.

And he did.

He never did go to the doc. He tried to push the knuckle back into place himself, but only got it about half-way back. To this day, his knuckle is still messed up.

I remember him regaling Fran and I with that story when we visited your tailgate.

Was it you that went to the Army/Navy game with us? Me, you, Ryan & Kaos, (RIP). The infamous "Sleepy" game?

Haha - Yes sir! Great tailgate right on the ring road! Outstanding seats! Thank you, Ryan!

Just an update: goskins10 & I are meeting to serve up some dinner at Ronald McDonald House here in ATL tomorrow night.
Hail to the ES tailgate for keeping that and Abby's Army going.

So the Redskins are in the playoffs! Pretty exciting! They're headed to Seattle!

I have family in the Seattle area, so naturally I organized the ES tailgate for that game in January 2008, just as I had in January of 2006. Playoffs are pretty big news, and Channel 7 wanted to meet the first arriving fans at the airport. So the news lady somehow learned that some guy named Mark The Homer was organizing the tailgate, and decided she wanted to meet us at the airport when we arrived. Her name was Suzanne Kennedy. We communicated by PMs on ES, I think. So I said, yeah sure, that's fine. I gave her our flight number and arriving time.

The game was on Saturday, so we were flying in on Friday. Travis and I left very early from BWI. We were dressed in full gear, and by coincidence there were a few other fans, four others I think, with us on that flight.

So we arrive at SeaTac, and as we approach the baggage claim area, we could see the TV cameras. TV cameras have these super bright white lights you know. And so it looks like some kind of foreign dignitary is arriving, when in fact, it's just us. Naturally we broke into song.

Hail to the Redskins! Hail Victory! ...

We were pretty loud, the six of us, especially considering it was an airport in Seattle. We turned a lot of heads, none of them happy.

So there's Suzanne Kennedy with a mic in her hand. And she's all smiles and the cameras are rolling. And so she talks to me first, and I stumble awkwardly though the interview. Next she talks to Travis. Travis wasn't expecting to be interviewed, so he is kind of taken aback at first. Then he lowers the bill of his ball cap and does the interview. Next, she interviews one of the other Redskins fans. And as she's doing this, Travis phone starts ringing.

I JUST SAW YOU ON TV, BRO! I JUST SAW YOU LIVE ON CHANNEL SEVEN!"

What?

Then it rang again. And again. All his buddies were calling him.

We didn't realize it, but Channel 7 had scheduled a live feed, announcing the first arriving Redskins fans to Seattle. Apparently, Channel 7 had advised their viewers to STAY TUNED, so that they could see the arriving fans. Which was us.

We didn't know this. I thought it would be a tape. But that's not the best part.

What I didn't know was that Travis had called in sick that morning. He said he was vomiting. He didn't know what it was. So he wasn't going to be able to come in to work. He told this to his boss directly.

And, naturally, his boss, was worried about Travis. What could it be? The flu? Food poisoning?

But his boss was also a huge Redskins fan, and just happened to be watching Channel 7 that afternoon, and was dutifully tuned in - anxiously awaiting for the arrival of the Redskins fans. And that's the moment he saw poor sick Travis being interviewed LIVE on Channel 7 from SeaTac Airport. :p

You can't make this up.

Great story, I guess Travis's boss had something to mess with him for a long time
I've been in food/bev for about 40 years...all my employers know it, I need Sundays and Mondays off...three are Bills fans, growing up there, still angry with me because of '91...but I got my GM the best jacket for his birthday one year, so I've been pardoned.

Another quick story...

Another ES away game tailgate - this one in St Louis...

So my daughter, DLSF, is going to school in Springfield, MO, so naturally we'll go to a game during her four years, either KC or St. Louis, whatever hits. And it's St. Louis. So we plan it way in advance and when the time comes, I organize another ES tailgate.

We got tons of help from one ES member, a woman, who lived in the midwest somewhere and brought tons of needed equipment and food too. Canopy, tables, etc. Can't remember her name, but she really helped us a lot. She would also help at other away games which were reasonably close to her, and she was with us at Canton several times, and she'd show up at a home game once in a while, too I think some called her the "ES Mom."

The game is Sunday. I got there early Saturday. Naturally there were a fair number of Redskins fans in the hotel, and we kind of congregated at the bar. Drinking. Sun started to go down.

Then, somebody comes into the bar and says "Hey man, the team is over at the Ritz Carlton! You should go check it out!"

So we all said yeah let's go! But the hotel was out of town. Not in downtown St. Louis. How do we get there? The hotel limo service! The driver didn't want to take us out there, but we finally negotiated a good tip, and he agreed. So he drove us out there in the dark. Long drive. Maybe 45 mins.

So we get to the hotel and go to the bar which is also kind of a dining area and it's the coolest thing ever. Random players are walking around casually or sitting and chatting with their families. Player families are camped out at the tables all over the dining room. Media and Redskins alum are around. Everybody really friendly. Completely different from any situation I've experienced when players are present. No idiot fans hounding for autographs. None of that crap. It was just relaxed.

My 19-year-old daughter knows thousands of people. She just does. So sure enough, she meets up with the younger brother of one of guys who was covering the game. He invites her over to another area - a cigar bar - which is smaller and only for hotel guests. So she went with him. We were not hotel guests, so we remained at the bar.

Meanwhile, we're just happy being there, drinking and watching the crowd, smiling, laughing, talking. Erin Andrews was talking to players casually, smiling, dressed to the nines, and the players enjoyed talking to her. Who doesn't like talking to a pretty girl? I don't remember what she was wearing - all I remember is she had stockings and really high high-heels. Of course, this was back when she worked for Comcast SportsNet, so she was covering the 'Skins exclusively back then. And so she basically knew all the players.

So it eventually got late and we called the limo driver and he agreed to come pick us up.

So somehow I get DLSF's attention that it's getting close to time to leave. And she doesn't want to leave, she's having too much fun. "How are you going to get back?" "I'll get a cab.", she responds. Well, she's a big girl. So we leave without her.

She got back to the hotel maybe an hour or two after I did.

The next morning, we have to run and start getting the tailgate set up, and while doing that she tells me about her evening. She was at a table there with various people, although she recognized very few of them. Everybody's talking among themselves, there are various conversations going on.

So sitting at the table some guy starts chatting her up. And she happily engages him in conversation. Can't blame the guy. Who doesn't like talking to a pretty college girl? And they're getting along very well. DLSF is great at conversation which is why she has thousands of friends. She's gifted in that way. She didn't get it from me.

They were chatting for quite some time. Some music was playing. He asked her to dance. Sure. They sit back down. They're still talking and getting along great. And as it turns out, this guy she was talking to was a player from the past. She didn't know it and she didn't catch on. Not knowing who he was, DLSF asked if he'd like to join us at the ES tailgate the following morning. And he indicated he was going to be busy the next day but she didn't catch on as to why. So he explained it to her by saying, "Well, I'm Doc WaIker."

The conversation goes something like this:

DW: Well, I'm Doc WaIker

DLSF: Good. Nice to meet you.

<pause>

DW: Uh, you know of me, right?

DLSF: Um, no. Sorry.

DW: I'm Doc WaIker! You know. Number 88!

DLSF: Oh! Number 88! That's nice. Did you play for the Redskins?

DW: Of course I played for the Redskins! I'm Doc WaIker! Look!

<he shows her his Superbowl ring>

DLSF: Wow!

DW: That's my Superbowl ring!

DLSF: Wow!

DW: I've got my own radio show!

DLSF: Oh! Your own radio show? Really?

DW: Of course! I'm Doc WaIker!

DLSF: Good!

<pause>

DW: How could you not know who I am? I'm Doc WaIker!

DLSF: Well, I guess it just means I like you for who you REALLY are!

DW: <speechless>

Note: I got DLSF's approval to tell this story

Such a great read, so appreciate the thread, nostalgic for sure, cool to find familiar names have morphed into here. I just found bgo recently & was on ES for many years. Skins since the 80's. I guess I'm something of an outlier, aussie boy living in NZ, but ES was such a regular home over many years of fandom.

Very cool to find many have morphed into here - I was pretty glum at losing the fam so suddenly but hey, everything old is new again!!! In more ways than one :chestram2:

I won't go back to the new "whatever it is". All of the cool peeps have come here, and here is where I'll stay.

There’s no activity there anyways outside of about 10 posters and 4-5 of those post here too. It’s really more of a politics board than a football one.

I just went to ES to sign in and see when I made my account and it's broken. Shows post from 2010
I was wondering about when I started my Extremeskins account, too, and tried to find out but, like you, couldn't. I was a frequenter back in the early 2000s. I even wrote a commentary that Om posted at some point. I was probably most active around 2005 when Joe Gibbs returned.

It’s really more of a politics board than a football one.
And at the end, was really feeding the negativity.
I don't feel that way here, it's very refreshing.
