Not a good night

There was a thread about this game on that Packers site. Most of the comments were about how brilliantly Vick played.

This is part of my post on that thread:

"Vick was brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

Andy Reid deserves kudos for doing a superb job of spotting and game planning for just about every weakness the Redskins have.

The shell-shock of the initial two touchdowns thoroughly confused and dazed the Redskins on both sides of the ball. We recovered enough to get some offense going in the second and part of the third quarter but by then it was too late and we had no answer for Vick-none at all. "

We have been uncovered and you can expect opposing coaches to game plan against us based on that. I think that has been at least part of the recent decline in the offense and difficulties encountered on defense-we have noticeable weaknesses that are coming to the fore and being exploited.

The next few weeks may be difficult.

I'm sorry, but you have two weeks to prepare the D against Vick, and this is the result?

I'm fast becoming a non-fan of the 3-4

I disagree. The Redskins are getting outplayed in every phase of the game. I haven't seen any holding by the other team. Their oline is getting the job done.

Are you serious. Look at the first play of the game... the left tackle had two hands full of Carters Jersey, almost putting him to the ground. Carter would have been in Vicks face had he not been held, and I have little doubt that there wouldn't have been a long TD pass.

Another, later in the game you could see a Skins defender coming through the line almost at Vick with his jersey stretched about 2 feet behind him giving Vick time to side step and throw.

There were a few so blatent throughout the game. Yes we did get outplayed, and McNugget throwing to to Philly defenders more often then Skins receivers was the icing on the cake.

Guess I'll have to get use to all the picks as we'll have the cast off QB for years to come, but I'll never get use to the non calls on plays my daughter can spot holding on.

Hmmm...can't help but agree with this. Time to either completely revamp the defense, or trash this stupid 3-4 experiment; one or the other.

And I like how Haynesworth is STILL barely seeing the field, but the first play he's in for, he makes a tackle at the line of scrimmage. Unreal. I really hope this is no longer an ego thing for Shanahan...

Have to agree with Pete, although it was Orakpo, not Carter. Rak is passed the OT, on his way to the QB, but his shoulders are squared up to the OT because he's still got a handful of his jersey.

Guys, are we really complaining about the refs after a 31 point loss?

I guess you missed the first play of the game then. Blatent holding on the left arm, grabbing the jersey outside the pads. Would have been called in ANY game not nationally televised. I went back and watched the Umpires eyes when they showed him. The guy is watching Vick quite often instead of the line. As entertaining as he's been, that's still a no-no. Also saw two chop-blocks that were missed although that's pretty common. My point is, there are ALWAYS less penalties called on Sunday Night and Monday Night. That's why I hate playing in them. When the Skins play a physical team, especially a division foe, on Sunday or Monday Night, they are usually outmatched. It didn't use to be that way. :(

You mean this play where Orakpo had his jersey pulled half way up his back while being held? I was screaming in my seats about the hold!

Apologies for image quality.

The first two or three TD's Philly had, there were blatant holds on Orakpo. I don't know why it is he never gets called.

The image above was the first play of the game. Would it have changed the outcome had that hold been called? I think so. I think that play shell shocked Haslett and ruined his game plan.

I know we are less talented and that we just aren't really that good, but that sort of non-call giving the Eagles incredible momentum going forward followed by a first series by our offense that boggled my mind, gave us little chance to start.

All I could think about during the game last night was my statement to myself as the off-season progressed, guarded optimism. Yet here I was watching a Redskins team go into a game against the Detroit Lions thinking, "We are 4-3 headed into Detroit for a certain victory." Well, so much for remaining guarded. I just can't seem to help myself. It is painful being a Die Hard fan of the Washington Redskins!

Does Haslett game plan? He looks lost out there. I know part of it is running a 3-4 without the right personnel, but c'mon why weren't we spying Vick? There were a number of times when he got outside the pocket he was free to roam. While he might have still beat a spy one-on-one he might have slowed him down or diverted him enough to allow some teammates to come to the rescue. Although they probably would have missed the tackle anyway.

I was thinking about that at the game last night. I saw him do it with Landry on at least one play where Landry was able to get to him before Vick could turn the corner. That should have been something we planned going into the game.

Haslett isn't even a has been D coord he's a has never been...why is he here?

I know what you're saying, but the tone was set with the first play of the game on a play that should have been flagged, and brought back. It might have been a different game.

Of course, throwing pics killed us more.

Eh. If one early score causes the team to fold like a cheap suit they have more problems than the refs missing a hold. Sorry. We got absolutely plastered last night. The refs were the least of our problems.

I agree with you, but is it too much to ask for the refs to do their jobs?

That upheld challenge on the Avant catch - are you KIDDING me? The ball clearly comes out of his hands as he's going to the ground. CLEARLY bobbled it. I have no idea what that ref was looking at, but it wasn't the play.

The subsequent touchdown - Avant came down out of bounds, and the ref is right ****ing there. I mean, let THEM challenge that he actually caught it! I don't care what the score is, the refs should never give up. Seems like they were mailing it in as well.

You mean the Maclin catch?

Looked like a catch to me. Looked like a catch to the announcers. And no, he didn't step out of bounds beforehand. I was looking. Believe me I was looking.

Again, this doesn't really matter. If the refs call every game perfectly we lose this one closer and lose to the Bears. Would you then feel better?

You mean the Maclin catch?

Nope, I meant the Avant catch, the 2nd challenge of the night for Shanahan.

2-10-PHI 29 (11:13) (Shotgun) 7-M.Vick pass deep left to 81-J.Avant pushed ob at PHI 49 for 20 yards (30-L.Landry). Washington challenged the pass completion ruling, and the play was Upheld. (Timeout #1.)

The Maclin TD was a catch, not disputing that one.

Both Avant catches were terrible calls. Turrible. But Henry is right. That was an ass kicking all the way around, no two ways about it.

Sorry I keep saying Carter. That single play has me so bunged up it's scary.

I seriously doubt it would have changed the outcome of the game but it might have changed the complexion. We all know how things tend to snowball, especially with the Skins. Had the refs called it, would it have kept the Eagles from holding the remainder of the game? Probably not. Flags simply aren't standard fare on Monday night because the league wants to keep things moving and they don't want penalties "deciding" marquee games. The Skins D-Line is not physical enough to offset being held, unless it's Alex Barron.

Point blank, the Philthies were simply better last night but I AM certain they don't put up 59 points had that first one been called. That was the domino effect at it's worst.
