Super Bowl or Branding/Name Change?

I know that and understand that, but I think those people at this point are a minority and especially when most fans aren't as.... extreme? Especially if we keep having success. If they change the name to something that those people still think is stupid, are they going to start buying jerseys? What about all of those fans that like Commanders, are they going to keep buying jerseys of the new name? Especially after buying Commanders gear? My point isn't to say any of the fans are wrong for either wanting a new name, or not buying Commanders gear. It's to say I don't see how it makes any business sense. And the optics of 3 name changes in a few years?

As soon as they changed the name to something those same fans calling for a name change feel is stupid, it's now their fault and you still will have a bunch of people not wanting to buy jerseys. But if you are winning football games, more and more fans will come around whatever the brand is.
 
Random thought this morning reading the replies - don't get me wrong, I absolutely want a Super Bowl even more than the rebrand. But personally, I really want the branding fixed BEFORE the Super Bowl rings happen. And I truly believe those announcements are coming this offseason, along with more insight on the upcoming stadium move to RFK.

I still think there was a huge missed opportunity with becoming the Burgundy and Gold and being known as The BOLD for short. It’s not a people or a thing, but an adjective.

Who are you a fan of?” “The BOLD.” “Hail to the BOLD!”

You can do tons around it and use just about any mascot you want and also retain the classic uniform scheme.
 
I can't root for them to lose, unless they play the Ravens in the Super Bowl. That being said, I'm glad you brought up the 1991 Redskins. This team rarely gets brought up as the top Super Bowl team and they are definiitely in the top 5 if not top 3 or best ever. Not many Super Bowl teams were as dominant on offense or defense and it rarely gets brought up that their first 3 home games were shutouts. The offensive line only gave up 9 sacks all season. They definitely were an amazing team run by, imo, the best coach of all time and one who won multiple super bowls without a franchise QB. No other coach has ever won more than 1 without a franchise QB.

This deserves a new thread all by itself.

I don't know about the " BOLD " thing, but I've always thought " Burgundy and Gold " was one of our best, if not our best option.
It ties everything together, and is something every fan and alumni can connect with.
We've all rooted for the Burgundy and Gold and all our players have played for the Burgundy and Gold.

That plus the three titles. It’s absolutely absurd! Not to mention all the Hall of Famers he went up against on a regular basis. Not sure it’s possible for an OL to have a better résumé. I don’t know what he did to piss the HOF voters off, but his omission is a stain on their integrity.

Because the Joe Gibbs teams were not self-promoting primadonnas--like what AP and DQ are building here, and what the Ravens have been so successful doing: they were more concerned with winning. Art Monk was the one of the most prolific receivers in the league prior to Jerry Rice, yet he was dubbed a "possession receiver" who didn't have a "signature catch" for years. Gary Clark (who is a fringe HoF, at best) gave DCs a migraine--he was one of the best deep threats in the league for 10 years.

Getting side tracked on this thread, but, it's funny how criminally underrated that era was.
 
A few years ago, somebody posted a photo of a group of coffee cups that were being sold on game day at FedExField. It was a white cup, and in the middle of the cup, it had the W logo. And surrounding the W logo was an outline of the state of Washington.

Imagine that for a minute. Not only was the cup made, apparently at the direction of somebody who worked for Snyder. It was purchased in bulk by somebody working for Snyder. Then it was pulled out of a box by somebody who worked for Snyder. Somebody likely stuck a retail bar code on the cup who worked for Snyder. Then it was placed on a retail shelf by somebody working for Snyder. The manager of the Stadium Store who worked for Snyder, apparently approved of this item. And there it sat, on the shelf, at FedExField, to be sold to a Washington football team fan.

I would like to suggest that it's likely the level of thought that went into the order and stock of this cup is closely related to the level of thought that went into the new name of our team.

I wanted to own one those cups! In my mind, it perfectly epitomized the Snyder era. I drove all the way down to the Stadium store that morning and looked for the cup, but they didn't have it anymore. Darn it!

Since I was down there already, I looked for a T shirt to buy - one that didn't have the C-word on it, or otherwise celebrated the new name. I finally found this one. It was over-priced, but I bought it anyway. **** me.

It is the only team item I have purchased since the name change.

We, the fans, need to exorcize the previous owner's influence on our team. We need to disassociate the team and ourselves from the C-word. And from the Snyder era.

We can do it if we band together.

I remember those teams well. I'm 58 years old. Art Monk was very quiet as was the rest of the team, just as you said. When Monk retired, Bill Parcells said he should go into the HoF downhill and on roller scates.

I don't know whether to laugh at this or weep. This stuff is why I will never believe DS grew up a "huge Redskins fan." Love is shown through action and this kind of stuff shows the opposite.

DS should be a banned initials on this website. Once anyone types in his name or initials it should automatically convert to something else. On the Ravens Message board we just type in ... when we are referring to JLC.
 
Great post, great pic, and I 100% agree Mark. I'm holding out hope that some of the owners, perhaps Harris himself, despise the name as much as most of us do, and that they are just taking their time to find the best possible alternative. It will always tarnish my feelings about this new regime if, knowing the fanbase doesn't want 'Commanders', they saddle us with it permanently.
 
I found the photo! I did a google search for: WASHINGTON COFFEE CUP. This is it! This is the same photo I saw which was taken at the stadium. I think this coffee cup perfectly demonstrates the level of thought and level of competency that the previous regime put into the current name of our team.

RavensMania, regarding the 1991 Skins, I've always thought that team is underrated by even Skins fans because of the lack of a signature moment in the game itself against one of the NFC powers at the time. The 82 Skins had the Darryl Grant INT vs Dallas and of course the Riggins SB run. 83, before the SB loss, had the NFCCG over the Niners. The 87 team had the Darrell Green punt return in Chicago. The 91 team? Maybe the seat cushions flying late in the Falcons win, but neither the Falcons nor Lions did anything special immediately before of after that season.

This isn't the fault of that team, of course. And we did lay waste to an AFC opponent that was in the middle of four straight SB appearances.

And I don't have time to look it up now, but you can find lists of SB winners that has the 91 Skins rated pretty high.
