Official Game Thread - Playoffs Week 2 - Commanders @ Lions

One of the things that has gone slightly overlooked is that every mobile quarterback the lions have faced this year has run well against them.
All that man D they play opens them up to mobile quarterbacks and they haven't faced one anywhere near as dangerous as daniels yet, the only one close would be josh allen and he completely torched them for 68 and two touchdowns on the ground to go with his 362 and 2 touchdowns in the air.

The lions defense does not matchup well with running quarterbacks.

Let me add, I'm not saying josh allen isn't as dangerous a quarterback as daniels is I'm saying he's not as dangerous with his legs. He's really good but not as good.

You can get tickets on vivid seats right now for 419.

That certainly doesn't seem like the most expensive ever.

And definitely not more than superbowl prices.

The article is claiming average ticket price is almost a thousand and quotes a lowest ticket price around 460.
I can't say if that really is the highest ever.
Might not be.

Either way it's going to be 99 percent lions fans and really really loud.
Crowd noise and energy may be our undoing if we can't avoid some of the pre snap penalty pits we've gotten sucked into in a few of our games this year.

I'd like to think we'd have a better showing than 1%, but no doubt it will be overwhelmingly Lions fans.

I was looking at our schedule and trying to think of where our most hostile territory has been.

New Orleans maybe ?

Cincinnati on Monday night ?

Granted, the Saints and Bengals are not the Lions.

They are the team with the top record in the NFC. They are considered top Super Bowl contenders. They have to live up to that.

Washington is the footloose, devil-may-care, nothing to lose team that isn't even supposed to be there. They'll probably be way more relaxed and energetic in this game.

I was very much thinking along these lines.

Detroit expects! They’re SB favourites, but have a spectacularly unsuccessful history and a choke in the playoffs last year.

They know they should go one better this year. Pressure is on. Interesting to see if they handle it.

As for Washington. While those last couple of season games might have seen us under pressure, we now have a even bigger pile of house money, a ‘why not us’ attitude, and an ‘ice man’ at QB. We’re having fun, so I think we’ll play fast and loose.

That could be the key to victory.

That said, I think the Lions have been battle tested by adversity through injury this year. I don’t expect them to fold. I hope we keep it close, but I’m not sure we have the raw horsepower to beat Detroit muscle this year.

Next season though… 😝

New Orleans was loaded with Washington fans.
 
I work amongst a batallion of Lions' faithful -- here is some of what they are saying:
  • "Cinderella season is coming to an end."
  • "Zero chance."
  • "Commanders had a cupcake schedule and never beat any winners."
  • "We're happy with who's coming to Detroit."
  • "You'll have to score way more than 23 to beat the Lions."
The fan base is VERY confident that this will be an easy W for the Lions.

I plan to blare "Hail to the REDSKINS" in the office Monday morning if we win.

If we remember BJ wronging us I don't really doubt that Peters and Harris do too. OTOH, Quinn probably doesn't mind that Johnson is an unprofessional dweeb.

I wouldn't go that far. With the weapons they have on offense, and the wunderkind Sean McVay at the helm calling plays, I think Philly's defense is going to be tested in a big way. Their goal will likely be ball control to keep Philly's offense off the field. Don't discount the passion the Rams are playing with as well with the wildfires going on in their neighborhoods. They seemed absolutely fired up last night and steamrolled the Vikings.
 
I feel like for the last month+ going into every game thinking, "wow if we could just get SOMETHING out of the run game." So I'll repeat, I assume Quinn & Kliff ideally would like long sustained drives that eat clock and you finish with points. The problem is trying to do that without a running game outside of Jayden Daniels means he is likely going to get a couple stiff shots like he did against Tampa.

I can foresee Quinn going for it with 5 yards or less to go on 4th down every single time we are inside an opponent's 40 and not quite into an "easier" FG range.
 
I think the trend I am noticing with our defense is that they don't have the personnel to get stops on most drives so Whitt is choosing the bend but don't get broken over the top style of coverage. I think we see a lot of guys get open with YAC opportunities underneath for two main reasons:

1 - The pass rush doesn't get home enough to disrupt timing plays. QB's far too often just have too much time to get comfortable in the pocket against us.

2 - We don't have the kind of secondary that can cover the entire field so Whitt is choosing to play off coverage, conceding the underneath passes, allowing teams to drive the ball and get yards, but seems to get more aggressive when they get on the other side of the 50 with less room to work.

To me, it is a personnel issue right now and not a lot the coaches can do to magically turn some of these players into the caliber needed to improve the necessaey amount.

All in all, I think they (the coaches) are putting the players in the best position possible to make plays but too much of the roster (on both sides of the ball really) are just not NFL starting caliber and would likely be rotation players on most of the other playoff teams. This still got the team to 12 wins, so I am content with the results until we see how the upgrading goes in the offseason.

if it happens, don't wait. you should go to their houses on Sunday and wake them up by blaring it outside of their homes.

I hope Marshon can shake off the rust and have a big game, because he got worked over by AJ Brown and Mike Evans recently. Assuming Whitt puts him on St. Brown, that's not an easy assignment.

I'm not confident our defense can stop that team. At all. I think it'll be up to the offense and Jayden to make some big plays and keep the game close. Make no mistake, the Lions are a great team; maybe the best in the league right now.

I don't expect us to win, but this season has been thrilling regardless. Just hope we put on a good show on Saturday.

Given Amon Ra is a slot, I would think Sainristil is the better fit to cover him anyway

I think the run game has a much better chance of showing up this week. On offense what worries me are pre snap penalties. Gotta make a living picking up positive yards on first and not get behind the sticks due to penalties.
