The 2025 Free Agency Thread

Cutting Payne isn’t feasible on his current contract.

I agree he’s been consistently disappointing, but what “new techniques” did he struggle to pick up? I’d be interested in your breakdown

You break even on cap hit vs dead cap if you cut him this year. He provides more plus value than a neutral value but I could see them doing it if they don’t want to incur dead cap in 26 and would rather take the pain now

The technique thing was something Keim discussed on his podcast a month or two ago

I’d say no to Deebo. Plus I think he’ll be back with the 49ers. He has a dead cap hit of $31 mil. ** I’m still learning about contracts. Just started looking into them. It looks like the 49ers can void his contract in 2026.

They set up void years so they are going to incur a $20M dead cap hit in 26 even if he sticks around through next year. That’s sunk so if you consider it sunk, you are saving $4M cutting him. If a Purdy cap hit is low ish one more season, this offseason may be the time to do it

I thnk one of the things we will discover is whether these one and two year free agent contracts are a bug or a feature. If Peters philosophy is really draft centric (and I thinkit is) then he may stick to filling in the roster with blue collar free agents and a few last hurrah guys. He very well may forego a very good player demanding elite free agent money (like a Tee Higgins) in favor of a solid player who can be supplanted by a drat pick.

My best guess is that we will see a blend, a hybrid philosophy which allows a big signing if the stars align, but I don't expect the open wallet, heavy spending of the early Snyder years. I also don't imagine we'll see the penny pinching of Bruce Allen. That said, ultimately, I expect Peters hopes to find the solutions in the draft and not look for answers but to patch up holes in free agency. In other words, I expect Plan B free agents.

I wouldn’t dislike this approach. There is some arbitrage signing older vets like Wagner to lower AAV one year deals. At WR, Hopkins, Thielen and Allen all fit this mold

I do think he showed he will go high on a position with multiple years for a player he thinks can be high end - Biadasz and Luvu

Yes but his roster spot will have to be filled so it's a net loss to cut him. So may as well keep him.

extend Terry and re-sign dyami. always liked dynami and hoped for him...so it's good to see him showing more than a glimmer this season.

I think the team should look to add a receiver in the draft that can grow with Daniels over the next several years akin to Burrow and Chase.

We need a lot more to put this team over the top but the idea of adding an impact player at a premium position on another cheap rookie contract that immediately helps Jayden in expanding this offense moves the needle more than a little bit for 2025 and beyond.

yep I'd expect that. dyami re-signing is for him to act as the #3 or #4 receiver.

Each Commanders victory is opening other players eyes to the JD5 magic and to DQ's likability and the confidence he shows in his team.
This should open the door for FA's looking to sign with Washington over other teams...maybe even at reduced costs. Should lead to an interesting and fruitful off season

didn't want Diontae Johnson when he was being offered up by Carolina and i'm glad we didn't go for him. he just got released by Houston. this is the biggest career meltdown i've seen in such a short period.

He hasn't lost a step at all and he'll want to play with a contender, which we are.

I wouldn't ignore WR in the draft either.
WR is very weak in the draft. Our best scenario is getting one and a CB in free agency. OT and Edge in the first two rounds would be great-deep in Edge- OT 2nd and 3rd seems pretty strong.

Something is going on with him. CTE related misbehavior like Antonio Brown? Substance abuse? Just a jerk? It’s the peak of self unawareness to make a scene with Houston after winning a playoff game because you didn’t get enough targets. He had just been dumped by Carolina for little return and dumped by Baltimore for no return. Side needs to wake up.

Some of these receivers are certainly strange.

Now, I'm all for reading and a champion of books and literacy, but AJ Brown reading a book on the sidelines during the playoffs is just uncool. Show some team spirit. Show you are part of the team and supporting the D or at least that you're working with the coordinator and QB to get ready for the next series.

The best part of that was Jalen Hurts saying he’d never seen AJ actually reading a book before. Salty.

It had a lot of highlighting and underscores. Good chance he bought it used. 😉

I really wanted Burden in the draft, but I think Brown can be a poor-man's Burden/Deebo type player and fill a niche. I loved how physical he was against Tampa. He's not as big as Samuel, but he clearly fits what AP/DQ want. I wonder if they go after Ward from SF as a much-needed change of scenery? Or do the stick with Sanristil on the outside and get a slot CB?

Personally, I go after a proven starter at outside corner in FA. In large part because I don’t trust Lattimore’s availability, but also because 1) we can move Sainristil inside, 2) Mikey also gives us outside depth, and 3) I think we should be able to bring back Iggy for depth in the slot. Land a corner in the draft and that likely becomes a vastly improved secondary.

I’m with you on Dyami. I think we need a deep threat opposite Terry. Someone that can pull coverage deep and that teams don’t want to leave 1 on 1. That should help some of the underneath stuff - to Dyami, Ekeler, etc, and possibly take a defender out of the box (aiding the run game and giving more scramble room to Daniels).
