Where would you guys categorize Metallica? Years (and years) ago I would consider them metal. Today? Kind of classic rock. Same songs, different state of mind.

At different times in their career I would have considered them more hard rock than metal. The Load and Reload albums are hard rock. St. Anger is mostly just a mess. Death Magnetic was their return to more of a metal sound and is a great album. I would qualify most of what they have done since then “Metal” in the more traditional sense although they blur the lines with hard rock as well. Hardwired and 72 Seasons I see as “Metal” albums. Others may disagree with me but that’s my take.
 
RedWolf there was a documentary released back in 2006 called “Metal: A Head Banger’s Journey”. For me that’s the best documentary I personally have seen to sum up those questions you ask. Where did Metal start? What makes a band Metal? The various versions of what is considered Metal like Power Metal, Thrash Metal, Black Metal etc. etc. The documentary is on YouTube now. I have a DVD copy.
 
I would classify 80’s Metallica as Metal still. It’s a product of its time. They’re not as aggressive as they used to be. James lacks the edge in his voice and the guitars don’t have as much aggression to them. So, to me their newer stuff is more like hard rock. They are definitely in the classics territory. But, I think they’re more hard rock because the metal scene has gotten so much heavier these days.

But this brings me to the point I made earlier. That metal is an attitude. I think Metallica lacks the attitude these days. I’m sure it’s harder to be edgy when you’re sitting on millions of dollars. Your life experiences just aren’t the same.

I don’t like new Metallica, but I do understand their popularity. They’re not a bad band these days. They are still good. Just not my cup of tea. When I listen to metal I just want something heavier and more interesting.

I still spin And Justice For All quite often though. My favorite album of theirs and I saw them on this tour when I was a teenager. They killed it.
 
The above documentary is called Metal Evolution by the same guy that did Headbangers Journey, Sam Dunn. I thought the journey was on YouTube but I can’t find it now 😞
 
Fan Since a Fetus I tend to agree on the heavier stuff. Master of Puppets is without question a corner stone metal album, but even that is more tame than a lot of what is coming out these days. Some of these newer bands or even the older ones like Testament snd Overkill are still releasing new thrash metal that is just straight killer. Arguably some of the best stuff they have ever done, in an era where they don’t get the exposure they would have back in the 80’s.
 
I have also failed to mention Iron Maiden. Huge fan of their work as well, especially since Bruce Dickinson rejoined in 2000. Their latest album Senjutsu is fantastic.
 
Now on the hard rock side, for the classic bands I’m a huge Van Halen fan, both Dave and Sammy. Guns N’ Roses, Def Leppard, etc. I listen to it all, just depends on what I’m in the mood for on a given day.

There isn’t a single genre that doesn’t have an artist/band I like. I’m big into classical as well. I can seamlessly shift from Judas Priest to Anita Baker, to Prince, to a Beethoven Symphony. Music has been my true joy in life. Mostly hard rock and metal, but definitely not all.
 
Yeah, there are a lot of bands that were considered metal in the 80’s that are just simply hard rock now. That’s not to say they’re bad or have gotten weak, it’s just a product of its time. I agree with Testament and Overkill still being metal. But no one considers Led Zeppelin or Scorpions metal anymore. But they sure as heck were when they were released.

As an example of more modern metal for those interested, here is one of the larger metal bands of the last 25 years. They just seem to get heavier and heavier with the times. A ton of metal bands rip off Messhugah in some form these days.

I’m the same. I listen to almost everything, except newer country. I go from Cattle Decapitation one second to 50s 60s 70s soundtracks the next




 
I’m not very familiar with Messhugah…that kind of sound is not typically what I gravitate towards in my metal. I tend to like the cleaner vocals. Now there are exceptions, Lamb of God and Hatebreed come to mind. Fear Factory is another. I really liked the first few Shadows Fall albums.
 
I’ve always considered Black Sabbath to be the first true “metal” band. Led Zeppelin the first true “hard rock” band. Some stuff did come before them, but they both really invented the archetype of metal and hard rock respectively for me. I was raised on Zeppelin by my dad and uncles who were huge fans. Zeppelin, Van Halen, and even the first two Boston albums were my first memories of being into rock and metal. Everything else came later as I went down the rabbit hole.

I see new country (last 25 years or so) as 80’s pop music with steel guitar and a southern accent. A far cry from Johnny Cash, Hank, or even Alabama. The hip hop elements that some of these artists have added in recent years have really pushed it even further from its roots. To shift gears a bit I do like the new album from Jelly Roll a lot, Whitsitt Chapel.

What about dudes like Devin Townsend that can bring singing and harsh vocals you can understand.

Fuck Sammy...DLR FTW! 🦍

I saw Van Halen open for Black Sabbath at the Baltimore Civic Center. VH I. Late 1979 or early 1980. There was no contest. Sabbath was heavily booed.

Saw every VH tour with DLR
