Soup is a Hug in a Bowl

I went back to a local again last night and was reminded of their chowder. It is perfect for this thread or the comfort food thread as it has great flavors.
House Smoked Bacon, Poblano & Roasted Corn Chowder - Award winning chowder made with All Natural Nitrate Free House Made Bacon, poblanos, roasted corn, potatoes, garlic, parsley & thyme.

About 10 years ago, my brother and sister and I took our kids to Mexico and rented a nice house in Playa Del Carmen. We splurged and hired a chef to come make dinners for us every night during our stay. One of the things he made was this incredible poblano soup. I made mental notes of it and when I got home I did a decent job of replicating it. Here's my version of it.

Poblano soup

Roast Poblanos in oven or on grill, peel, and puree

In saucepan, combine:
4 cups Poblano puree
2 cups Chicken broth
1 cup Milk or half-and-half
Salt/fresh ground pepper to taste
1 cup sliced button mushrooms
Juice of 1 lime

Bring to boil and reduce to simmer 10-20 minutes

To soup, add:
1 cup sliced roasted corn from the cob
1 cup small shelled and deveined shrimp

Simmer until shrimp cooked

Serve with French bread

Thanks Boone. Might give this a whirl Tuesday or Wednesday, after the cold front rolls in. We don’t do high temps in the 40’s very well down here.
 
Anthony Bourdain is my favorite. He was a really nice guy and no BS. Ate dinner with him and others twice. He knew his shit and had the experience. HE HATED the food network and all the fake plastic cooks calling themselves "Chef." He didn't like being called Chef out of respect for guys like Paul Bocuse. Coming from a French Battalion I totally get it, but I do watch FN shows from time to time.

I kinda like Pioneer Woman because she is just putting up recipes "from the ranch" without any pretentious BS. Bourdain would have killed 3D GF if he was anywhere near him. I totally get that as well.

The stories I can tell...

It's warmed up to 24 with 13mph winds and flurries. The wind cuts through you, brrrr. Any soup is sounding good just like last night. Mrs DWinzit and I wish we had purchased extra to go chowder last night for today. Next time may take a crack at Boones poblano recipe!

Made this last night. Enjoyed it very much. Good hearty soup. Was worried about how flavorful the broth might be, but was very good, I’m assuming due to the bacon and sautéed veggies.

Used Great Northern beans, but may opt for Cannellini beans in the future. Think I’ll like their flavor and consistency more. I did add the chopped Romas—added them about 10 minutes before serving—and they were a welcome addition. Chopped parsley also.

Next time I make this, I will simmer this at a little higher temperature than suggested, just to make sure the beans get the consistency I prefer. Served with naan, and it was plenty hearty enough to be a filling meal. Thanks for the recipe Boone!

I don't make many soups except when I have a chicken or turkey carcass and make some soup out of that.

My daughter loves soup, so she has prodded me into making a couple, including her favorite Avgolemono which is delicious.

I've never heard of Avgolemano but it looks pretty good with a quick Google search ... chicken and egg and lemon and rice... sounds like a pretty good combo
