The 2025 Free Agency Thread

I go back and forth on throwing the bank at Higgins on a big contract that presumably lets us out after 3 years (aka right when Jayden's contract hits us in the nads) and going after a Cooper like guy who will presumably be cheaper and a shorter term option. Maybe Godwin sits somewhere in between.

If Higgins could be expected to be healthy, I'd pull the trigger. We're still in a precarious part of Jayden's development where we want to give him tools to continue to grow and succeed, and not make things too hard for him. Which we are currently doing. Thank goodness dude has ice water for blood.

If it wasn't too much investment, I'd sign a WR and then draft one high; that or an RB high. Atlanta had the right idea back in the day with their Roddy White -> Julio Jones -> Calvin Ridley pipeline. Would give us a lot of flexibility at WR too. As much as I hope Terry's got another 5-6 years in him, if he's only got 3ish left, having a Tee Higgins waiting in the wings to be the vet and a Luther Burden III ready to take off, would be pretty big.

Sign Higgins, give Terry a new deal, re-sign both Brown's and Zaccheaus, draft a guy and "roll with a deep crew" as DQ likes to say.

2025 Week 1 WR room: McLaurin, Higgins, Noah Brown, Dyami Brown, Olamide Zaccheaus, Luke McCaffrey, Draft Pick

Wonder if Davante Adams gets cut. He’s older obviously, but as far as I can tell he’d be a heck of a placeholder for (potentially/hopefully) a rookie wr.

It’s already been reported that both Rodgers and Adams won’t be with the Jets next season…not sure what his contract situation is, though. Can’t imagine they’ll have much leverage if he’s even tradeable again

Yeah the Jets are a disaster with their owner Woody being the biggest issue, terrible decisions Snyderesque.

I imagine Peters would explore trades to take advantage of their teams poor situation

Adams contract was 5 year $140m, that's daunting

Haasan Reddick will also be available but he hasn't done squat since agreeing to play the end of the year.

I like the idea of looking at Garrettt Wilson, dude is solid and young.

For whatever it's worth, I don't think you're going to see many trades from Peters. He likes his draft picks, and I think he shot his shot on trades with Lattimore.

I DO think you're going to continue to see them plug holes with veterans as they continue to build through the draft. A la Wagner and Ertz. I think a veteran WR who's north of 30 + a draft pick is an absolute possibility.

I'm not sure they would go after Higgins. Again, I think Peters, if he had his druthers, would draft the WR rather than pay big money for one. But a "medium" contract vet WR to pair with Terry I think is a must.

And there will be several of those out there. Not what they once were, but good enough to be a #2 across from Terry (and better than some combination of Brown, Brown, OZ, etc.)
Stefon Diggs
Keenan Allen
Amari Cooper
Chris Godwin
Brandon Cooks
Mike Williams
...

Others will get released.

It would be great if they went after Higgins. But I don't know if that's going to be their MO. I think it's more likely they sign one, or maybe 2, of the older guys to pair with some of the guys they have and they draft a guy early. They probably need to do that for a couple years, because Terry is sneakily getting older. And they need a succession plan, eventually.

If Keenan Allen could be our 2025 version of Zach Ertz, that'd be pretty neat. Dunno how much he still has in the tank, but I said the same thing about Ertz. Allen as a short term stopgap while someone like Egbuka develops (sorry Luther I think you're gone before we pick) could be the play.

They can do both. The rookie WR would need to be extended once Terry's new deal comes down bc he'd be ~33 and Higgins would start to either come down or would be on the last big deal as he'd be ~29.

Not dissimilar to CB. They need to sign a guy like DJ Reed or Charvarius Ward and keep drafting guys.

Ertz and Ekler were both guys who were vets people had written off who have had very good seasons.

Kliff knew Ertz. I don't know if there were any connections to Ekler.

I didn't go back and look, but I know Cooper was in Dallas, and Quinn (and others) were in Dallas, so I'm not sure if they overlapped. I don't know if there is a relationship with Keenan Allen somewhere also.

I doubt they go big for Higgins. You know who I think is going to overpay for Higgins? The Eagles. And then everybody is going to say they are going to somehow win 23 games in a 20/21 game season.

I do think they like Noah Brown, though. And Diyami, and OZ. One of these guys they like is going to get pushed down and off the roster. My bet is it's Diyami. Because I think they really liked the size and physicality Noah Brown brought.

One thing I would be shocked if Peters didn't address overall though is offensive team speed. We just need to be a bit faster overall.

The connection with ekeler is through Anthony lynn.

Lynn would presumably know Allen too from the Chargers, though of course that would be from when he was like 24-28, not 32, but he might have insight on his work ethic.

Kliff would know Hopkins from AZ too.

Man we're knocking on the doorstep of being a SB contender and y'all are talking about Keenan Allen and Deandre Hopkins. Think bigger! Go for Higgins and if not him, Chris Godwin. Draft a guy, too. It's time to push in the chips in FA while Jayden is on his rookie deal.

I don't disagree, it's just hard to know if Peters will want to do that, versus building through the draft and using vets as stopgaps.

When you have as much cap space as we do, there's no real tradeoff between signing premium vets in FA and building through the draft.

The best way to develop a rookie WR is to have them learn from Higgins/Godwin and Terry. The best way to develop a young CB is to learn from Marshon Lattimore or DJ Reed/C Ward. The best way to develop a pass rusher is to have them learn from [whomever].

Jayden's cap won't balloon till year 5. That gives us another three years to absorb front-loaded cap hits on star players.

As for Peters, just look at the Lattimore trade. He realizes this team is good to very good, and with Jayden you always have a chance. Now imagine getting some real weapons on offense and building up the defense... WR, CB, Edge, RB, OT, DL are our areas of need in that order IMO. They can all be improved between FA and the draft, with big dollar deals allocated to the first group (WR/CB/Edge).

I think the biggest thing on Higgins in my mind is his injury history. Guy misses like 4-6 games a season. Between him and Lattimore I feel like we'd all be tearing our hair out.

If you wanna talk about "Way way too early" how much money do we need to set aside for Malik Nabors and Brian Thomas Jr in 2028?

These are the exact reasons why I’m not in the Higgins signing camp…. He’s the modern day Alvin Harper signing by the Bucs after he was a #2 on the Cowboys…. And his prone to injury and time missed is a key element…. I say no thank you to Tee Higgins…

and let’s be honest with ourselves… being opposite of JaMarr Chase really really does benefit him “when he plays” for the $ it wound take to sign Higgins I say invest it elsewhere

I might be more into Chris Godwin, who doesn't have the same injury history and is also an excellent blocker which is important in our scheme.

Thanks for the blocking reference. If we could sign Godwin, we would seem strong at WR next year.

WR Chris Godwin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Godwin has consistently displayed reliable hands, dropping fewer than 6% of catchable passes in six of his first seven NFL seasons. He was on pace to maintain that standard in 2024, earning an 85.7 PFF receiving grade through nearly seven weeks without a single drop on 52 catchable targets. However, Godwin sustained a season-ending left ankle dislocation. He is no stranger to entering free agency with an injury, and hopefully, the recovery will be even quicker this time around. https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-2025-nfl-free-agent-rankings

Good call. Godwin could be great depending on his health and cost. But I think he would fit here.
