Yeah, I recall two. Very early on a pass to the left to Luke who looked like he was going to throw it, but then pulled it down and ran, and then the one you mentioned - a screen to Dyami that he was going to throw back to Daniels. Sort of semantics, but my impression was that it wasn’t exactly snuffed out, but a lineman got pressure and then just sort of stopped playing… but was close enough to Daniels to mess up the play?

I doubt we extend him. In order to extend him we would have to give him more guaranteed money and I doubt that happens.

I don’t know how likely a trade is because of his contract situation.

My guess is he’s released and just finds a new team. Unless he REALLY wants to be here, in which case it would be some type of a team friendly, short extension converting some money to guarantees but not adding a huge amount of new money. But I see that as unlikely.

Regardless, he carries a $21m cap hit for next year with a large cap benefit to trading or reading him, so something will happen, either a trade, release or restructure.

It sounds to me like this would be the best option. I would love to see him around when we approach success at a decent contract.

Yeah my memory isn’t nearly good enough to remember the specifics. Good on your for remembering the second. I think I recalled the D Brown one.

Neither worked.

I think we’ll see it again at some point. Luke could run it. I’m sure others could too. Daniels can catch, and defenses won’t want to put a spy on him after he’s handed the ball off, so likely he’ll be open if the guy throwing the ball has any space/time to throw it.

I also think we’ll see another flea flicker. We did that flea flicker screen which was great. I wonder if we can actually get a flea flicker down field.

I’d actually LOVE to see a Statue of Liberty play.

Just like this classic for Boise State to beat OU in the fiesta Bowl. Pump it out on the WR screen to Terry, have Robinson coming around the back. Score. Win.

 
Thanks for posting this Gooseneck - I had an extremely busy week and had completely missed Washington picking up Osborn off the waiver wire. He is pretty comparable to Olamide Zaccheus - very similar stats although he's got more career receiving yards and TDs than Zaccheus despite having 1 season fewer games. He was pretty productive in Minnesota but obviously the Patriots did not even use the guy in their offense. He's small but fast and has good hands. Also has returner potential. And he's only 27.

As the pod mentioned, it's sort of amazing we got a guy off the waiver wire this late in the season that is this talented. As a bonus, he apparently has a great attitude and character. I really like this move. And we needed this boost to the WR room badly.
 
Similar stats to Zaccheus?

Osborn's stats:

2021 - 50 catches for 655 yards and 7 touchdowns

2022 - 60 catches for 650 yards and 5 touchdowns

2023- 48 catches for 540 yards and 3 touchdowns

I don't see these two players being close in any regard.

Zaccheus had 10 catches last year in Philly mostly working as a #5 receiver when active.

Osborn at 5'11 and 195 didn't fit Jerrod Mayo's preferred scheme in New England with taller receivers fighting for contested balls downfield in 2024, but that doesn't mean at 27 he still can't be a productive #3 in this league and for us a decent #2 with the injury to Brown and our lack of depth.

In fact it wouldn't surprise me if he plays well here starting next week (?) if Peters brings him back in 2025 to compete for a spot, perhaps as a #3 behind McLaurin and the Receiver 'X' I think the club will go out and get in free agency or in the draft to be a future playmaker for us.
 
You cited last season - which was Zaccheus worst season as a pro instead of the previous 3 seasons where he averaged 30+ receptions a season That's like my pointing to K.J. Osborn's 7 receptions this season as representing who he is. K.J. Osborn averaged about 50 receptions during the prior 3 seasons, so he's certainly been more productive than Osborne - which I acknowledged. I could have chosen my words better, as I agree Osborn is better, but my point was both have been productive but nowhere near top tier WRs so far in their careers. Olamide is a better punt returner than K.J. as well. Here is a side by side comparison.

What I see though is a player in Zaccheus that didn't have the chops to step up when Dotson was traded and do what Noah Brown did, take over the #2 role on our offense and produce some numbers to take SOME of the heat off McLaurin.

I know from watching the Vikings over the years and the talented group of receivers on that team going back before Jefferson and Addison to Diggs, etc. that Osborn in THAT offense was able to get on the field and play regularly earning snaps.

To be honest, I don't see Zaccheus making that roster in Minnesota.

I think we got VERY lucky in that Mayo simply decided not to play a guy because of a preconceived notion of how he wanted to run an offense, no doubt based on his DC experience, and that lead to a quality player who is being paid over $4M this year, sitting on the bench healthy watching games.

But I don't think that reflects poorly on the player. What I heard was the Bills and Chargers were both looking at Osborn when we snagged him, so other quality teams and GMs thought he might be a value play for them.
 
It does say something that many keep thinking these trash heap receivers will immediately supplant our guys though. The Texans thought Noah Brown was their seventh best receiver so they cut him. Almost immediately, he became our number two. Now, New England cuts a receiver that's part of an uninspired group and again some think he will climb our ranks to number 2.

That's not really a strike against either Brown or Osborne. Maybe it's a strike against Houston and New England's roster management, but it does say something. Off the street free agents shouldn't be bumping off guys we chose for the initial roster especially when the offense has been very productive. For most of the season, Washington has had one of the most effective passing games in the league. So, maybe our receivers deserve more love... at least within this scheme.

Even if it's also easy to see that we have a ways to go before assembling our ideal receiver room.
 
Burgold, the simple truth is that Osborne was paid in free agency a $4M plus incentives deal to play WR, which from his past in Minnesota equates to being either a #2 or #3 (most likely) receiver on a good team.

What are we paying Zaccheus? We picked him up as a street free agent for what, the minimum salary? I would be surprised if we are paying him more than $1M.

So, in part you are comparing apples and oranges.

No one out there was going to pay Zaccheus $4 or 5M to play football in 2024 during free agency in February/March.

If he was even a capable #3 there is no reason the Eagles should or would have let him leave, only to make a trade for Dotson later on to fill that role in somewhat of a hasty, desperate move which is rare for them.

There are a couple of positions on this team, including depth at wide receiver and cornerback where the talent during the course of the year has been RAZOR THIN.

Before acquiring Marshon Lattimore we really didn't have ONE legitimate outside starting corner that scared anyone or caused OC's to avoid throwing on him.

Brown was able to come in and be productive specifically because Dyami, Olamide and Luke aren't at this point consistent contributors in the NFL.

Luke may get there given he's a rookie but the other two in my opinion will be gone in the offseason and likely to be practice squad material in 2025 with other teams.

I think Kingsbury knows how to scheme up an effective offense, and one result of that is that good WRs (McLaurin) are going to look great, and decent WRs (the Browns, Zaccheus, maybe Osborn) are going to look good.

I think it's hard to argue that we really would benefit from having a WR opposite Terry who is his equal or close to it. We are making due with what we have at the moment.
 
I remember Kingsbury saying that after watching the film on him in Minnesota that he endorsed signing Osborn as he said 'he's a guy that I think can help us' in 2024.

So, the OC himself is basically saying the player is not being brought in to fill out the 53 man roster but rather to be a productive member of the offense in place of Brown.

Boone - I would have to disagree in lumping Noah Brown in with Dyami, Olamide and the others.

Before being injured Brown was a regular on offense and after being signed went to the front of the class behind McLaurin.

These other players have NEVER tied down a regular, productive role on this or any other club.

Look at the number of snaps Dyami gets, that Zaccheus gets.

And look at WHEN these players are on the field too. When Washington is behind and moving downfield for a potential decisive score what did we see, but McLaurin and Brown out there at WR.

These other players couldn't beat Dotson out and then once he was traded some folks thought that meant an increased role for them, instead we wait less than 2 weeks to bring in Brown and these guys were simply moved further down the bench.

Them's the facts.

That's fair. Just to be clear, the 'lumping' I'm doing is putting guys who we picked up off other team's trash heaps in the same bucket - because that describes our WR corps beyond Terry, McCaffery, and Dyami. None of them (Noah, Zaccheus, Osborne) are likely legit long-term #2's. That doesn't mean they don't have talent, or even that they are all equal in ability. As I said in my first post, I'm amazed we found a guy like K.J. Osborn on waivers this far into the season. I like Noah Brown also. I'm not sure he'll ever be a legit #2 though.
 
Agreed. We don't have many pedigreed dawgs at the moment at wide receiver.

Scheme and finding out what guys do well is the gift of the great coordinator. He makes the sum greater than that of the parts.

Gibbs won a Super Bowl with Alvin Garrett who we picked up for $100 on waivers from the Giants and Charlie Brown, a #8 draft choice from South Carolina.
 
Oh - and a QB who can actually place a ball perfectly. Makes a huge difference.
 
Good back and forth in here on our lacking WR talent/depth…just want to interject that I don’t think it’s fair to say that Noah Brown was seen as the 7th best WR in Houston and thus disposable. Context matters, and they didn’t want to give up on some of their young WR depth they’re developing who have yet to really do anything in the league.

Nico and Tank clearly have things locked down when healthy, but they’re carrying a ton of speculative developmental guys that they couldn’t decide between in August. John Metchie, Xavier Hutchinson, etc. So with a young QB, they decided to bail on the veteran Noah Brown despite some big games down the stretch last year—and to be honest with you I think they made an error in their roster building. Stroud has come back down to the earth this year, their two very good starters have both predictably had recurring injury issues…Stroud could have really used Noah Brown, and none of their young guys have broken out at all. They miscalculated, they made a mistake, and for about half a season we benefited imo.

Noah Brown still isn’t a great player or anything. But there’s more context to his release from the Texans than is being mentioned in here—and some newer context that makes his release look like a tactical error on the part of Houston. So, something to think about.

In my mind a guy like Noah Brown, when healthy, makes the perfect 4th WR who can sub in for an outside starter as the 2nd guy at a couple positions when necessary, but still technically sits behind a stud slot guy on the depth chart. It definitely isn’t a good situation to have him as your #2, but he wasn’t just the Texans’ trash. There was context to his availability.
