The 2025 Draft Thread

Don’t forget that they are going to spend on extending Terry, too. He has no more guaranteed money left on his contract.

I think Lucas' insertion demonstrates that we probably do need a long term fix at right tackle. I'm not opposed to drafting that in the first round if a tackle is the best player available, but I don't know that it's our highest need. Peters will likely go with a BPA strategy with need being the tiebreaker. I suspect we all would agree on the biggest need areas.

CB, WR2, RB, DT, EDGE

As far as running back, I think we could use both a third round back, but maybe even a replacement for BRob. BRob has amazing fight in him, but he gets hurt way too much and is starting to be unavailable or limited as often as he is available.
As of now, I’d actually put TE ahead of RB. Ertz and Bates aren’t signed past this year, Sinnot hasn’t shown anything really as a pass catcher, and then there’s Yankoff. I would really like to add a back though, and given the depth of the class I’d guess we draft one.
Agree with your points about RT, though I’ll add that I hope we re-sign Lucas.

We talked about Sinnott (and McCaffrey) a bit on the Blind Pig podcast: https://www.bgobsession.com/threads/bgo-blind-pig-a-washington-commanders-titan-ic-win.180240/

But I don't think you can take any stock in what Sinnott has done or not done. As of now, Ertz is our second leading receiver. You're not going to take reps from him. Bates is our best blocker. Sinnott is being allowed to develop and that's okay.

I'd be willing to bet we come away with at least one of the two (Bates and Ertz) if not both in this FA period.

I think RB is a big need. Robinson is a stud... when healthy. Ekeler is a stud... when healthy. McNichols is our most consistent back.

I'd like to move Ekeler to more of a slot/return man/hybrid role and let BRob, McNichols and a rookie go. I'm just not sure Jeanty is the move. Too early to spend high end capital on a running back.

My preference right now is Quinshon Judkins from Ohio State and Omarion Hampton from North Carolina. They will likely be round 2, early 3 types.

I didn’t mean to suggest/imply any negativity regarding Sinnot, it’s just that he hasn’t proven himself as a pass catcher, and so I don’t think we should assume he can carry the load as a #1 TE next year (not that you are obviously).

I too think we re-sign Bates and maybe Ertz as well, but as of now it’s Sinnot and Yankoff (and Turner) vs Robinson, Ekeler, and Rodriguez (and Wiley). Probably a different story once the draft rolls around. And I’m with you in that I think we draft a back - we could use speed, health/insurance, and it’s a deep class.

This is a good deep draft for us to upgrade at RB. There should be value throughout day 2 and early day 3.

You guys nailed an item I've been thinking about on Blind Pig, which you all did a nice job with.

The vet FAs that were brought in for leadership and instilling their on-field talents.

How much has Wagner added to Luvu's already good talent and to young guys like McGee not to mention all of that defense. And then how much has Luvu brought to that same table.

The same goes for Ertz with what he has brought to SInnott and the other young TE's game.

My gut is in one of these must win tough games KK is going to sneak some Sinnott plays into the mix moving him around to change things up from what defenses have seen to date. They could do similar with McCaffrey like how the Patriots offense for years would emphasize different players in different weeks keeping defenses on their heels.

In Sinnott’s defense, it’s not easy to show your abilities when you are given almost no opportunities.
Yessir. I think 4 passes in his direction after 13 games so far. Yikes. And lets be honest here, Ertz ain't all that now in the tail end of his career. While Ertz has the experience to know how to get open (and that can be vital to a young QBs development,) Zach doesn't scare anyone anymore. There is no YAC from Zach.
Sinnot was a second round pick made by GMAP, I don't think Peters spent the 53rd overall pick on a Bates blocking clone. He was a h-back/FB/TE type guy at K-State. So if Ertz is still taking a good number of plays/receptions from Sinnot in 2025, it might be time to re-evaluate that pick.

^ That’s my concern with potentially re-signing Ertz - no explosiveness and he could stand in the way of guys that could offer more. On the other hand, outside of a few mistakes here and there, he’s been really solid for us, and obviously a crucial outlet for Daniels, so I’d hate to move on without a definitive replacement on board.

Edit: maybe “hate” is too strong, but I’d at least be a little nervous about it

On a separate note, Miami has a real shot at going 5-0 to finish the year. It would be unfortunate to finish with a worse record than them.

Ertz is our second leading receiver and Daniels is comfortable with him. Your rookie being comfortable bypasses any other reason for anything, imo.

Tight Ends/H Backs generally take time. Not all, Bowers is on fire. But most do. Allowing him to be eased in is smart. I don't think it is ANY indication of ANYTHING as far as his ability or what the staff thinks of him... Other than we have time to let him grow and develop without throwing him to the wolves and letting him get frustrated.

Maybe he doesn't work out. But then again, guys who look great in year one can crash, too. There is never anything definitive until a body of work has been solidified. This is a 3 year evaluation, in my opinion.

My thought when they drafted Sinnott, with Ertz already on the roster, was that they would let Ben learn the ropes from Ertz so that he would slide in when the inevitable injury felled Zach. But, Zach has stayed injury free so far this year, and has become a favored target for JD. Hopefully Sinnott has learned how to understand pro coverages, and where he can find the spots to get open for JD.

Sinnott is a plus athlete at that position, probably even more athletic than Ertz at his prime. He is a big unit, and I watched enough of him in college (wife is an Ok St. grad and we watch a LOT of Big 12 football) to know he is a baller. I think we will see much more of Ben Sinnott starting in 2025. Heck, we may even see more of him down the stretch, if Kliff thinks he’s ready to make an impact now.

OK, but at the time of the draft we had not yet seen Ertz in training camp or the preseason to determine he was going to be this much of a contributor at 34, given his past injury issues.

So, to me the team was drafting Sinnott with the idea that he was likely going to see some playing time in 2024.

I think if you had told Adam Peters in April at the draft that Sinnott would put up the numbers he has to date this season he would have told you he expected more out of him.

I think it's also the difference between a coach drafting and a GM drafting. A coach is going to draft to fill today's needs because he's worried about the next game. A GM gets the luxury of a longer perspective. He can draft looking not only at this season, but two or three years down the road. In free agency, a GM patches holes for the now. In the draft, the GM invests for the future. So yeah, you want your early rounders to be early contributors, but the more important thing is that you want your early rounders to become foundational pieces for that generation of the team.

This is why I think people grade the draft immediately after the draft and again three years later. If by year two and three, these guy aren't merely producing, but starting and starring that's when you know you are in trouble.

We're taking it slow with Sinnott but I'm not gonna lie it is a bit disappointing that a 2nd round pick is still only TE3 three months into the season. I still like his long term upside though.

A great point, especially at the TE position. Last year LaPorta looked like the next star TE. And he may still be. But this year he looks replacement-level at best. Development is not linear and we don’t know what these guys are for quite a while. Some guys even have super late breakouts, like Marcellus Bennett and Evan Engram.

This is a guy I’ve been interested in since watching Daniels games last year. Thoroughbred bloodlines- son of Jason Taylor, nephew of Zack Thomas.

Yeah, I know. But fair enough, I probably should have said “reasonable” replacement instead. So, if we draft a TE early and re-sign Bates, that trio (along with Sinnot) is fine by me. Of course going into the draft feeling like you need a TE isn’t ideal, but there are a lot of other permutations that could occur.

To clarify, because based on your responses it feels like maybe you’re reading more into my comments than I intended?
1) I like Sinnot and am looking forward to seeing how he progresses.
2) I like Ertz, but I feel like we could do better there. As competition and a vet presence though, he’s a good option.
3). I brought up Sinnot’s lack of production simply as part of the calculus to explain why, before factoring in offseason moves, I think TE looks like a weaker position than running back for us. It wasn’t an indictment of Sinnot in any way as I’ve always been a believer in the logic you spelled out above.
