Senator brings up NFL Censorship of Redskins LOGO (specifically Logo)

Here is an article from last year about the Chiefs. There is a lot of good info here, but I found this statement in particular to be very interesting.

“While writing Mascot Nation, Black asked a national sample of 1,076 people to evaluate the “acceptability” of various team names. “Chiefs” had the second highest acceptability score, after only “Braves.” “Redskins” and “Indians” ranked second- and third-least acceptable, respectively, with only “Savages” scoring lower.”

Putting aside the politics…

The thing I keep Thinking about here is the money that I feel like they’re maybe leaving on the table by NOT moving to a new identity.

It’s pretty clear that the Commanders name is not well liked. Maybe we’ve picked up some newer JD related Young fans this year, but on the whole most people (and the media) either outright hate the name or think it’s Meh at best. Many of the old guard fans either won’t touch merch with the Commanders name on it, or are reluctant to buy it. I know I have about 6 Redskin jerseys in my closet, 1 WFT one (Terry!) and 0 Commanders. I have a hoodie with the Commanders branding and a cap… and that’s it. I’m constantly on the lookout for retro gear on eBay etc.

The Commanders brand will always be capped below its potential as a revenue stream because of this. At least until us old fans die off 😝

Could you imagine the potential sales surge of a return to the classic threads, the old logo, a new name that doesn’t stink AND having Daniels name on the back?

I feel like sales would rocket.

I’m at an age where I have disposable income and I’d jump at a chance to get a ‘Redskins, style JD jersey. Even Commanders kids might be excited by a new name and there could be a lot of parents out there who are veteran fans who’d love the chance to kit out their kids in classic gear with the new names.

Maybe it’s just me, but it feels like a cash cow waiting to be milked!!!

it was a good logo but sadly we need to move on. the team divested themselves of anything native American (even when the logo was a tribute!)

This is really just about the logo.I think this was done after the memorial ceremony in September.

7:00 min mark and onward.

I finally got around to watching the video. Ryan has not received a "hard no" on the return of the logo. Until he does, I guess we can continue to hope, but nothing is guaranteed that he will. Like I said above, I would be all for it if there is a way to bring the logo back with a Native name like Braves without inviting controversy. With that said, I'm going to try to (mostly) put this to the side until after the season.

We have a 7-4 team and we are playing the Pukes on Sunday. :redpunch:

I think "never" is too long. I remember when the Bullets became the Wizards. People seemed to HATE Wizards just as much as they do Commanders and for years people stubbornly said Bullets when it related to the team. Now, no one does.

I don't like the Commanders. The idea of saying or singing "Hail to the Commanders" bugs me on a philosophical and personal level. When I went to the 'skins game against Chicago this year, I sang the song correctly after each score. But I know that with time, the name will be adopted and no one will think twice about it except for some occassional "Get off my lawn!" style nostalgia.

My hope is we rebrand with the new stadium. I'm partial to the Washington Werewolves just because I'd love to hear the whole stadium howling and I think you could amazing things with the uniforms and helmets. I can't see Redskins coming back, not because it's offensive, but because they almost never go back. For that reason, I can't see Braves either. Going with Braves is basically going back to Redskins. It'd be Redskins-lite. If they did that I'd be mad that they didn't choose Coke and tried to foist New Coke on me. Worse, Braves might just be Cherry Coke... and who wants that?

Wizards was stupid then. Wizards is still stupid now.

I’m not a fan of Werewolves either, (unless the hair is perfect). No need to go down the folklore path, wolves howl too.

Everyone's a critic

.... and one thing's for sure. My favored names will never be the finalist. However, as a wise Monty Pythonist once said, "You don't like werewolves? I fart in your general direction."

Howl with the Werewolves
Howl victory!

My son spent several hundred dollars for a Terry Redskins Jersey. If they even had an old logo with the new name the gear would sell like crazy

I've seen a few people expressing this sentiment, and I still don't understand it.
They're point seems to be " Well, if we're winning, people will just get used to it. "
Yeah, they probably will.
But, why would you win with a bad name and brand when you can win with a better name and brand.
Regardless if it's Braves, the logo, or something else, I am all but certain Harris & Co. would decide on something better than Commanders.
So, why wouldn't they ?

Or, maybe, ... a little Coke is better than no Coke at all.

You can call me whatever you want to.
I know what ill be singing

It's not even about winning. It's just about time. When was the last time you heard someone say Washington Bullets or Houston Oilers? Ten years from now or twenty years from now, we'll be in the minority singing HTTR. The rest of the world will cave in and move on.

Ten or twenty years from now I will be dead. Until then it is only Hail to the Redskins for me. Whatever the rest of you do, do you.

F that. Redskins to the grave. I would LOVE to see the old logo in use with a new name. The "C" blows. Let's return as close as we can to our roots.

See my username

HTTR

EDIT: My 27 yo son is in the same camp, more or less

oilers and bullets were garbage and their uniforms were garbage

just give me our uniforms back. I would love the old logo, but if its a W or a wolf...whatever. just give me the Redskins uniforms at least

I get the thought process, but it lacks context. Those names/brands weren't associated with the worst owner in sports history. 'Commanders' in addition to being an absolutely generic meaningless name, was forced upon a fanbase, after perpetrating a 'fan outreach' effort that was ultimately COMPLETELY ignored. No one wanted this name or the logo and uniform changes that came with it. They knew it sucked and didn't care. Which is the absolute epitome of everything Dan Snyder did during his tenure as owner.

It's got the stink of Snyder all over it.

Most fans want it cleansed and replaced. It is Owner incompetence not to do it.

I think you're right that eventually, winning or not, fans will stop squawking about it. But I think today - there is a right thing to do and the other kind of thing. I hope they do the right thing. The fans want it.
