Senator brings up NFL Censorship of Redskins LOGO (specifically Logo)

I’m speaking solely on the position that Sen Daines has taken now. When he said that he and the family are “satisfied” and that he voted in favor of moving the bill along, I believe him.

I have no idea what has occurred that led to said satisfication.

I believe that the memorial to Blackie Wetzel and the logo on the club level alone could be what satisfied the family. Maybe there is more we don’t know about yet, but there has been no indicators of anything else.

While I would like nothing more than the logo back on the helmet with a different name (as long as it’s done in a way that is void of any further controversy)…I don’t think that is where this is going. Senator Daines didn’t say that was where it was going. He’s talking about restoring the logo to “prominence”…and at this point nobody knows what that means beyond the memorial.

At some point the team is going to have to issue a definitive statement on not just the old name (which they did) but the logo as well. People need to know whether or not to get their hopes up, and until these issues are resolved one way or the other the new brand will never be fully embraced. I don’t envy their position, because it’s largely damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

I am not so sure; I think the original post article was actually from activity last week in the Senate. It didn't sound like he was satisfied at that time. This week, now, he is saying he is satisfied. So, if my understanding of the timeline and indicators are right, something happened between last Tues/Wed and this week's vote.

The club level thing was unveiled back in September.

I think they wanted some tangible promise (on paper? I have no idea) that the logo scrubbing in particular would not happen again. It is very vague as to what happened, which makes me wonder how solid of a promise he even got.

“There’s been good faith conversations that will allow this logo to be used again”

Sure sounds to me like we could see it on a helmet on some level

I am not in a place I can play / listen to video this minute. Where is this quote from? Chris's post? (https://www.bgobsession.com/threads...ins-logo-specifically-logo.180133/post-492443) I liked the post but can't listen to the audio yet.

I honestly did not think I would hear those words with respect to our old logo. Wow.

'Used again' could mean anything though.
That's true. "Used again" in promotional video, which they were apparently resisting based on that Darrell Green footage. Good point. I will watch that video ASAP though because I want to hear how it was stated. Could be typical politician-ese. Make a minor win sound like a resounding victory. The pragmatist in me remains skeptical I guess, after your point.

How in God's name does a 'reporter' not try and pin him down and get more details on what was discussed? He may not have answered but at least ask some questions...

Yeah, at least back him in a corner to say something like “due to the family’s ongoing negotiations with the team I can’t reveal anything specific”

It was a national news show, not local. So that probably explains the skimming of the surface. To be fair though, Fox News is the only one of the 3 major cable news channels that would have even allowed the photo of the helmet to appear, not to mention any criticism of ‘woke culture’ or ‘DEI’ to be spoken.

I actually think the key word in Daines' comments on the video above, is the term " revenue ", which implies at the very least they will be selling something.

I’m going to go way out on a limb here, but maybe behind the scenes with Ryan Wetzel as a “mediator/negotiator” of sorts, a Florida State type situation has been agreed to with the Blackfeet? Perhaps a revenue sharing situation that allows them to use the logo with another Native style name that is not controversial?

I almost hate myself for thinking it, but if something like that was to happen it would be incredible.

OK, I finally watched it.

You are right, revenue is an interesting word there. It sounds like at a minimum they must be talking merch. Maybe historical stuff, maybe introducing the potential for its usage in throwbacks. That would be the best guess - not going back to it fully. They probably foresee too much risk in that, given their position on things that have any potential negative consequence to the financial side (talking NFL here, primarily).

The other interesting thing was how the reporter at the end just casually throws out "good to see it on helmets again" at the end, but there's no real time for a response, so hard to gauge the meaning. Could have just been a reference to the file footage that was playing.

Seems very likely that the logo will be "open" for usage, but probably not set up as the official current logo. So, as many of you stated - throwbacks, merch. That's pretty cool. I don't like the idea of any stigma associated with it. That has always seemed pretty stupid to me, and it was definitely happening. This should stop that insanity in its tracks; for that, I am definitely grateful that someone said something, even though sure, of course, in the grand scheme of things there are bigger fish to fry for the Senate. However, it's not like they spent too much time on it, and it's a nice little sign that sometimes sanity can break through. Hopefully more sanity to come.

You went there! I'm impressed with your bravery. I shield myself from those kinds of thoughts, because in the modern climate (and that is a multi-dimensional issue, including purse-strings, feelings... a lot of sides) I still don't see that level of embrace happening. It is interesting though. The vector overall is to reducing these names and imagery. The irony at times (and this is recognized by many in the Native community) is that they are actually erasing visibility of an already hard-to-see minority, against the wishes of many in that minority for that very reason. I still harbor a lot of doubts that the general vector would be turned around by this team at this time. If it had already started the other direction, then sure. I don't think this team at this time, is the one that starts a movement the other way. Even if it's slowing, the general movement is still to reduce these names I think.

I fully admit I passed skeptical and turned left at cynical when it comes to politicians quite a while ago.

Typically, when you want to find the reason a politician is actually doing something, you follow the money.

I think a lot of these discussions could have been trademark related. The NFL and franchise still own the trademark on the old logo, as far as I know. I imagine Daine was probably trying to pry that loose, and that would in some way benefit him.

I wonder, however, if by forcing the issue, he’s basically made it so the NFL and team can start using it again on merch. Maybe a special “legacy” brand or something.

There is no way the team or league was going to give up the rights on the old logo. It’s worth millions.

I’m not sure what the exact play was or who was going to benefit, but I don’t buy this was all for moralistic recognition reasons. There’s monitary reasons behind all this. I’d bet all the money on my left front pocket on that.

Another recent quote from Daines...He says " prominence ".

" I urge the team to continue their dialogue and reach a conclusion that honors their past, honors Don Wetzel’s vision to use the logo to help Indian Country and honors the will of the Blackfeet Tribe to restore the logo to place of honor and prominence,” Daines said.
