Maybe I'm dead wrong. It would probably be the only 'home run' solution to the whole name change thing Harris could pull off (go back to the helmet logo and traditional uniforms and adopting some name like 'Warriors' that is vaguely Native American-themed).

My gut says they don't want to go there.

On the flip side, they do have some leverage - in that the Harris group could demand the NFL either accept that compromise or do something about the Chiefs name/traditions as not to do so is outright hypocrisy. Without getting political, the national pushback on 'woke' culture could provide a window for compromise - while agreeing some might see 'Redskins' as offensive, very few ever have or will have an issue with things like the logo and a more 'appropriate' native-themed name.

Maybe trying to go with that kind of compromise is less daunting than coming up with something completely new?

But I'm still skeptical. I would think DC sports folks would be all over the folks involved to divulge what the team told them. I will be honest - I am a little irked that the team has not been transparent about what was shared and that fans continue to be kept in the dark.

A bill to grant Washington, D.C. control of the federal land where the old RFK Stadium site is located has passed, the first step in luring the Washington Commanders back to the District.

On Tuesday, Daines said he would support the bill – with the condition that the Commanders honor its commitments to "restore the logo to prominence."

Like Boone has said I don’t know how they return the Native American logo to “prominence” beyond what has been done. The most obvious course for me to do this would be to bring back the logo and name the team Warriors or some other Native themed name. I just don’t think they want to wade into those waters again. We can do better than what we have currently have but it would be foolish to go back to a deliberate use of Native American anything. Commanders may suck as a name but at least nobody is writing articles and organizing protests every time we get a high profile win about how our name is racist. I grew very tired of it all and have no desire to see that kind of distraction return.

Kind of ridiculous the NFL is apparently fine with the Chiefs and their logo, but wouldn't allow our logo created by and portraying a member of the Blackfeet tribe.

Well, there is probably a wide, wide chasm between scrubbing the logo from promotional material, and having the logo on the helmets in games and all merch.
They could:
- have some historical exhibits that feature the logo
- discuss the logo maybe in *one* particular place in the stadium or Ashburn facilities open to the public
- NOT scrub the logo from PAST videos (get the NFL / media partners to agree that was unnecessary)

Perhaps those items would be enough "prominence" - and not be so far as to *reasonably* invite protest. I am one who does not think inviting conflict upon oneself is generally wise, and I have a lot to do in my life that I think matters (we all do), so then it's like, you have to triage and ask "is this worth the fight/argument it may cause" even if you disagree with the underlying issue. HOWEVER: you can draw a line too.

Scrubbing the logo was over the line.
Trying to have 0 display would be over the line.

Perhaps those three bullets would reach the compromise needed.

It’s not only the name and the logo. It’s also the tomahawk chop and the war chant. Completely hypocritical of a league that was all in on the BLM movement.

Reading the tea leaves, I would gather that whatever accommodations Sen. Daines and the Wetzel family were seeking have already been satisfied as Daines stated.

It looks to me that Daines got as much mileage out of his actions (hostage taking) as he was going to.

Historical acknowledgement and appropriately honoring the best parts of what came before (the logo) is probably the best they can hope to achieve. The fact is the voices against “all Native American imagery out of sports” have mostly gone silent since our name change. I wonder why that is? At one point they made it clear our team was the beginning of this fight not the end. Then afterwords, mostly radio silence. I wonder if the backlash to changing our brand and the fact that four years later people are still very salty about it all caused them to step back and reassess their views?

I’m speaking solely on the position that Sen Daines has taken now. When he said that he and the family are “satisfied” and that he voted in favor of moving the bill along, I believe him.

I have no idea what has occurred that led to said satisfication.

bringing the name to prominence means it has to be the logo . . . the main logo . . . by definition of the word prominent it would have to be the main logo to be the prominent logo. Anything else would just be a lie.

One thing I feel confident of, having gotten the football side of things on the right track in 2024, the ownership group needs to put the whole name change and logo thing to bed this offseason one way or the other. It's ridiculous that it's gone on this long and it's one of the few areas I think Josh Harris has earned some criticism.

It would have to be under a different name. Warriors has been talked about and seems to be the most logical choice but I imagine there are some other options also that would work.


At a minimum it could open the door to throwback opportunities in the short term, allowing the team to wear the old uniform with the word Washington across the chest, like we had under WFT.

I personally liked what he had to say and have a lot of respect for people he represents with these comments. There are several tribes in Idaho and I know several people who are or have at least some Native American blood. My daughter-in-law as well as my own daughter (who we adopted 18 years ago as a new born) both have Native American blood. It's common in Idaho especially the northern and central part of the state. I often wear hats and shirts with this former logo and on occasion will have a Native American person tell me how they think the new logo/name is terrible and they were proud - literally thats the word that has been used... "Proud" of that logo. I don't kid myself thinking the Redskins name will ever return but why not the logo in some capacity? The editing out the logo by the NFL is ridiculous. Those that are somehow offended aren't even Native American - at least not anywhere close to the majority. It's virtue signaling and it's silly at best. I doubt anything will come of it and we will stick with the stupid "W" taco holder.

I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone here who disagrees with that. Unfortunately the NFL has its own ideas which is how we got to this place to begin with.
