I think it's possible Daniels might go A LITTLE longer than initially intended just because it will be hard to judge anything on offense with a QB who got here 48 hours before game time.

If there are any players they want to get a look at, they might try to get them reps while Daniels is in the game.

I wonder if they rest McLaurin so they can get reps with the rest of the folks with the starting QB.

But who knows...

I think John's concern at kicker got a little more substantial

I don't think anyone played themselves onto the team yesterday, but I think we had a few people play themselves off the team. Mitchell Tinsley dropped two. Patterson missed two. Kaz Allen had a fumble and still hasn't made an exciting play in two preseasons. People keep talking about how dynamic he is and maybe it shows up in practice, but I never see it during a game.

Overall, I actually feel like we acquitted ourselves okay. Never got into the endzone, but kept getting into scoring position and the D did its job. Miami certainly looked like it was playing less vanilla with all their blitzes, end arounds, and gadget plays. Refs... if this were a regular season game I would have been really frustrated by the blown PIs and personal fouls. Some big time misses.

I feel like Miami's offense shredded our secondary for the most part. They are one of the more quick-hitting tempo offenses in the league so it's a tough match up. But I do worry about our DBs some. St-Juste is okay. Sainristil is promising. And we have some safety talent. But It's not a very deep group.

Hard to judge much from preseason games, one reason I wish the NFL would just do a single warm-up one and then get on with real games. I would throw Chris Rodriguez name into the 'meh' category. And Reaves got burned a couple of times including missing the tackle that resulted in a 59 yard gain. I thought the 'starters' on the first couple of series played pretty well though.

After missing two tackles, Reaves went into missile mode. A few devasting tackles before he injured himself.

I believe this has to be the worst preseason ever. You can't even get the full day one starters on the field for a series, much less a quarter.

League as soft as butter anymore.

About the only thing you can figure out for certain is they have no kicker....what else is new?

My observations:

Good:

Daniels looks fluid and smooth running the offense. He and the receivers seem to have a good feel for each other. Night and day from preseasons past.

Dyami Brown looks focused and as if he wants to be here, which is something we didn't see for much of the past couple of years.

Michael Wiley has good quickness and vision in the backfield. This guy looks as if he can play at this level. I am not convinced that Chris Rodriguez has a spot sewn up on the final 53.

Luvu and Sainristil look like the anchors in the back seven. They play fast and seem to be all over the field. They don't miss tackles.

Still productive vets like Jamison Crowder make a case for themselves to be retained as versatile depth performers.

Bad:

Patterson is definitely not the final kicker for Washington in 2024. My guess is he here for another week and then into final cuts. I am still looking at which kicker Detroit decides to go with.

I hope Michael Deiter doesn't have to play many snaps for us at guard in 2024 because he looks rough out there, doesn't seem to be able to handle inside power. Perhaps he's a guy that just plays one position, center.

It's very frustrating to watch this secondary outside of Sainristil. Most of these guys were Rivera draft picks and not seventh rounders either. Most if not all appear to have decent to good speed, size (outside of Forbes issues with strength), etc. But on game days they all play small. Either they are late to pick up their man in coverage, blow open field tackles, or fail to make plays on the ball when they are in good position in physical coverage.

One would think out of the stable of Forbes, Martin, St. Juste, Butler, Forrest, etc. that ONE of these guy would step up and become a real player for us. Still waiting on that one.

I was going to mention pass rush here but we have played mostly 3rd day draft picks and undrafted free agents on the DL in the first two preseason games. Outside of Jamin Davis, who is still trying to prove himself, many of these guys are long shots to make the roster. Even our #2 pick, Newton, has taken no live snaps. So the grade here is still a question mark until we see the regular guys for more than 2 or 3 snaps. Ferrell looked good last week in his early work against the Jets.

I went back and watched the first quarter when I wasn’t juggling kids, dinner and game all at the same time.

Something very interesting: the run game features A LOT of pulling linemen and TEs Not sure if that’s going to continue or not, but on every play, somebody from one side of the formation pulls and blocks somebody on the other side. On one of BRobs runs which was successful, the pulling blocker actually totally wiffed on the block, and BRob made a good move to slip in front of the tackler.

In fact, I think the timing of the pulling was off in just about every play. When they get it timed up properly, it could be very effective. But they have a lot of work to do on getting it timed up.

I also don’t think that’s going to be a strong suit for Big Luc. Probably why they really like Coleman, who would be better at that type of scheme.

We’ll see if this holds. It’s very “Gibbsian” style of run game. The key will be marrying it to a pass game in play action.

Refs... if this were a regular season game I would have been really frustrated by the blown PIs and personal fouls. Some big time misses.
The refs were abysmal. Though head ref certainly has hit the gym and has been working in his guns. But there were several “huh?” Calls.

Actually both the calls on Wylie were either questionable or wrong. BMitch said on rhe false start, the defender was past him before he moved, which should be defensive. I didn’t look that closely but it certainly looked close.

The holding didn’t look like a hold to me. In fact, it looked worse: he got beat, tried to hold, was late on that also and got air. But the ref predicted he would hold and threw the flag even though he failed.
