When I've heard 'culture change' here over the Rivera tenure, I always took that to mean that the folks inside the building acted as professionals. They carried themselves with class, treated people the way they deserved to be treated, embraced diversity, and had a professional and appropriate workplace. When they said 'culture', I feel this is what they were referring to.

I have always felt that building a WINNING culture is a completely different thing, and much more difficult to do.

I hope Peters and Quinn do know how to do it.

Exactly. And we have been making that distinction bright and clear around here for quite a while. The world will catch up eventually.

Be interesting to see what if any role Doug Williams has going forward. He’s definitely a guy historically tied to the glory years, and not someone easily just dismissed by a new regime.

The best way I ever heard a coach explain culture was during a NCOY clinic a bunch a years ago.

He said take a Viking Ship with 30 oars. 15 each side. When you set it up properly, you can look on either side and see smooth action taking place. You have a point that your trying to get to and you constantly are checking to make sure your heading in the right direction. Each oar has its job. When the HC is yelling 'ROW' he is pushing for consistent behavior. IF the ship is not going in the right direction, he can then look over each side and see where the ship is struggling. Corrections of all types need to be made and that is where the HC comes in to play. The key being making sure that each oar is accountable to the other 29. The culture is the process to get the ship from one place to another in the fastest and most efficient way. Just to cover the bases here.....the GM owns the ship. We take the owner out of the team in this example.

The attitude of each person on the oar is the key. There are always different ideas on how to make it more efficient but the ship still has a process that has to be followed in order for it to move. That doesn't change. However, you put a bunch of people on your ship that think their way is better, than the effort put in to move the ship is inconsistent. Then you fail.

While there is more to this and I spent a lunch talking with this coach about this, it just made sense as to how complex it is to put a bunch of Alpha Males in one room and get everyone on the same page. But if you can, then it seems almost effortless for all the people making the ship go and success happens.

I liked it. Worked for me.

Good thing the Viking HC didn’t have to deal with rowers represented by agents and a union, a rations cap, a rower limit, a knowitall press and fanatic base forensically analyzing and critiquing every command.

“Fuck that, Sven! Toss him overboard and next man up.”

The good ole days.

As a college rower I appreciate the analogy.

I agree with Doug that in the long run positive change only comes when people are doing the right things to win.

Yes, having folks say please and not proposition the interns is important 😊

But in Doug’s experience being counted as a decent human being wasn’t something his teams had to hope for in coaches and executives.

Interesting news from BMitch and Finlay; just heard from reliable friend who listened and heard about interview process:
1st round of interviews: HARRIS and MYERS
2nd round: PETERS, SPIELMAN, MAYHEW

For now, assuming it is correct/true. Just for now/sake of argument. Not sure about BMitch/Finlay credibility.
So: indeed, too many cooks. It's just a lot of opinions. I get that people want voices heard, but I think this is why the decision process was slower than others. It definitely fits.
Also: No PETERS in round one is very stupid if you hired him as GM. He should have been in round one in my opinion and potentially back for round two. I do think Harris really thinks Myers' opinion is very important though, as he stated when talking about bringing Myers in (really loves the Golden State model and execution, which is understandable).

I am not yet saying this is true. If it is, that's bad even if the hiring works out.

I think the context matters. If the first interview was more introductory, and not 'selective' (ie... they weren't screening who would go through to the 2nd interview in any way) I have less problem with it. I agree, at first blush seems weird that Adam Peters wouldn't be included. Maybe they are trying to mitigate Peters inexperience at GM. Then again, if that's the intent, the fact that Harris has zero football experience/knowledge and Myers is a basketball guy, it doesn't make a lot of sense.

I have already said it a few times, but now that we have a HC, Harris needs to back the **** out of the equation. Let the football folks manage it all. I would've preferred he did so after Peters was hired.

I keep waiting for him to be sent packing. He seems like the Cerrato type that will just do whatever the new ownership says to try and keep his job. I have more trust in this ownership group, but he just appears to be that company guy that will do the bad thing or the right thing depending on who is telling what to do.

I think the situation was slower than all others (except Seattle) simply due to the fact that they had to wait for what were their assumedly top two candidates to be available for in-person interviews. Nothing more, nothing less.

So - sounds like Finlay and Mitchell have their info wrong. Here's what Albert Breer wrote today:

"That left Quinn, Detroit Lions coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, Houston Texans OC Bobby Slowik, Los Angeles Rams DC Raheem Morris, and internal candidate Eric Bieniemy for the first round of interviews. Those were done over Zoom into the weekend of the division playoffs. Harris, Peters, Martin Mayhew, and consultants Bob Myers and Rick Spielman were part of those (with Myers and Harris in for the first hour of them, and the other three there throughout).

•The format for the second interviews was also a little different. They’d start with Peters, Spielman and Mayhew, then hit a break, then go two hours with Myers and Harris joining in, before finishing up with Peters getting one-on-one time with the candidate."

The way I read that, Harris, Peters, Mayhew, Myers, and Spielman all did the initial virtual interviews. Myers and Harris just sat in for the first 30 minutes. That's quite different from the way Mitchell and Finlay described it.

Another bombshell - Washington found out Ben Johnson was withdrawing on 'X' and only got a text from him a little later informing them. Talk about unprofessional.

While the interview schedule seems a bit grueling in terms of the number of people doing the talking and questioning the overall amount of time taken was not unrealistic.

Jerry Jones spent 6 hours with Bill Parcells talking about the job in Dallas during their first discussion at Teeterboro Airport in NJ.

So, the guy didn't have the starch to actually get on the phone and call Peters directly?

What a piece of s***.

A message by text after the fact?

Shows this guy isn't anywhere close to being ready to lead an organization as HC.

He has to grow up first.

It appears he is 37 going on 17.

Any comparisons to Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay is strictly positional in being an Offensive Coordinator, the personalities and character couldn't be more different.

And Peters called Bill Belichick sometime around the time that MacDonald took the Seattle job. Wonder if that was asking about Quinn, or more about Belichick himself?

Yeah, what bullshit. Reinforces my Soft Johnson stance.
