Random Commanders Thoughts

Great words from Brissett. I’ve wondered who is saying anything encouraging to anyone on this team. I agree with others that this team seems to have quit. But for every player on this team, they have a career to fight for. A guy like Howell, he’s at a big point in his career where he can either work through this or he can break. I’m worried he will break without anyone helping him through. I’m glad Brissett is doing what he can. The coaches can’t get out of here fast enough.

Interesting tidbit about Brisset today-

After concluding his presser and leaving the room, he returned minutes later with Howell for his turn in what could only be a show of support.

We just got a Christmas present from the Patriots. The victory tonight moved Washington to the 3rd pick in the draft.

This is an example of why I believe young players need gray beards. It's not just to set the good example, but to guide them through the tough times. This is why I don't think you trade every good player or every player past their prime. I don't think Brisset winds up staying if somehow we wind up with three then I think it's even more unlikely because chances are it will go Caleb, Marvin, and then we would take Maye even though I still think Howell has a chance to be really good and really want to fix the o line.

With the right coach, I see Howell making that Hurts jump or that jump we've seen so many very good QBs make after struggling their first year. Right now, Howell has hit the wall and he can't break through not with this line or this these coaches. Back to the original point though, it's good Howell has someone who can say to him, "I've been through this. This is what we go through and this is how you come out on the other end."

Shanahan
Williams
Young

44 on the team is from my school district

Any other Redskins connection there we let go?

I really think that eb kept mahomes grounded, without him there everyone says he is great ect abs his mistakes are ignored. EB would not ignore them
I also think that Josh Allen misses Dabol. Bills offense just hasn't been the same. Eagles have a great record this year, but it's not a stretch to say that the loss of their two coordinators have hurt them. As far as Bienemy, it's interesting how fit might just matter when it comes to coordinators as much as players.

Just another comment Chase Young wont be on the Niners next year unless he plays for vet min. He is awful even around a team with tons of talent

The benching of Howell makes me return to the thought that we should have fired Ron about six weeks ago and given Bienemy a chance to test drive his head coaching prowess. I doubt he could have pulled an Antonio Pierce, but it'd be nice to see what he could have done. The main reason not to let Bienemy get a head coaching tryout was because people thought it more important that he continue to work with and develop Howell. Well, that's moot now and chances are Bienemy will be fired along with the rest of the coaching staff without us knowing if he could handle the job or not.

He hasn’t been able to field a consistently effective offense and the young QB who supposedly was the most important aspect of the offense to ‘develop’ has been benched. Why would that warrant a tryout at interim HC? I get the ‘he couldn’t possibly be worse than Rivera argument’ I guess…

The real reason they wouldn’t do that is that you are bringing in a new regime and it’s not helpful to create a situation where it’s presumed (or even suggested) who the next HC will or should be. And that’s assuming Bienemy looked more capable than Rivera - which I think is a big assumption. It’s very unlikely thrusting Bienemy into an interim HC role, for the latter part of this schedule, with this team tells you anything about whether he could be a good HC in the future whether it went well or disastrously.

I like Bienemy, but he hardly looks ready for more responsibility imho. Let the new brain trust figure it out.

It's sort of a double hindsight argument.

Six weeks ago, we were feeling pretty good about Howell and the offense was doing relatively better. We were frustrated at the lack of a running game and thought the blocking was killing us, but Bienemy was holding us in games despite JDR and Romeny. When the catastrophic games happened, getting obliterated by the Bears and the Giants, a number of people thought Ron should be fired and the question of whether Bienemy would ever get his shot was still in the air. The argument against Bienemy was actually that the offense and Howell was doing pretty well and did we want to change that which could result in Howell not receiving the guidance he needs.

Fast forward, we now have benched Howell and we lost the opportunity to see if Bienemy had the ability to become our head coach. I do agree with you that given the way the offense fell apart (though it looked damn good with Brissett which could be a mirage) that he probably wouldn't have executed the pivot and shown himself to be a great head coach prospect for the future. Still, it might have been interesting to see how he would have handled it. Clearly, the team checked out on Ron defensively pretty much from the onset of the season and now the offense looks like it's cratering too so it may not have changed much, but it would have given us a new data point.

You make some good points and you are right that the ‘narrative’ looked a lot different mid-season than it does now.

The other thing (which I have said before so sorry to be a broken record) is that it might have been patently unfair to make a handoff to EB in such a dire situation. That wouldn’t be most people’s preferred audition choice. A coach would at least need an offseason and to bring his own team on board to show what he can do vs this struggling mess.

You know what? The narrative was different a few weeks ago but I remember a lot of folks here questioning how long it would last with the amount of hits Sam was taking and a lot of questions about why EB didn't try to balance the offense more given that.

IMO, there's always been a healthy amount of skepticism about the way EB coordinates this offense (at least here).

So either EB can't balance an offense or he refuses to do so with Sam. Either way, he never showed much interest in protecting the kid.

Don't know why anyone wants to give him the reins of the whole team given that.

I think between ignoring the protection of Howell by failing to bolster the OL and throwing him into the deep end of the pool by having him drop back 651 times in his first season, EB committed OC malpractice.

Agreed.

You know, today's generation of fans like to tell us that the league has changed, this ain't the 80's anymore, etc.
But some things in this game never change and one of those things is that all young QB's need help.

Some fans point at RG3 and his rookie season with comments about how well he did but fail to mention or realize that Kyle ran the hell out of Alfred Morris, which helped Griffin immensely.

With the backs they have, there was no reason not to give Sam that kind of support.

This all may end up working out quite well for EB. If Brissett comes out the next two weeks and runs the offense effectively against a couple of the leagues best defenses, the narrative on EB all of a sudden looks a whole lot better than it did two weeks ago.

The drama of EB and the 2023 commanders is not yet fully written…

If Bieniemy is the answer for the future of the franchise then I clearly don’t know the question.

He does give ‘good press conference‘ though, so there is that.

The entire NFL already knows Brissett is a capable backup. While the truth is that Howell’s implosion ultimately has to be owned by Howell himself, it’s fair to say that EB did little to set the young man up for success. If developing Howell was Bienemy’s primary job (and everything the HC has said to date suggests it was), that effort was an epic fail.

I don’t see a couple of good games from Brissett changing much on that front.

I’ve gotta be honest, I’m finding myself unenthused even about the coming blow up. It won’t surprise me even a little if Rivera manages to pull a pointless win out of his clueless ass over the next 2 weeks. He’s effed up everything else, so I expect him to eff up the one possible positive remaining before he stumbles off into the sunset.

I’m not in a good mental space about this team, and only marginally open to the idea that the folks doing the redo will be more successful.
