2024 - Way too early draft thread

1. Premium starting LT
2. Premium starting LT
3. Premium starting LT
4. Premium Edge




10. Marvin Harrison Jr....

The thing is, I am 100000% in the camp of re-setting our team with a game changer, so I don't want to then take a guy who can be 'good' and pass on a player that can be GREAT. Now the conversation about whether Harrison can be GREAT is absolutely one that can be talked about, but I think it can be a legit conversation if we're faced with a situation where we can't land those other options...
 
The best and most successful Redskins teams were those that were very physical in the trenches. Even when you look at the top teams in 2023, in particular the Eagles and 49ers, and to a lesser extent the Cowboys, Lions, and Ravens, these are teams that have emphasized physicality up front. The game may have changed and evolved somewhat over the years, but having a team of bullies will ALWAYS have a place in the NFL. If you remotely believe that Sam Howell can be the guy long term, you do absolutely EVERYTHING within your power to protect him and protect him well. We have been scratching our heads forever wondering why we can't turn things around, but when was the last time we were truly able to say that we had a top 3 or 4 offensive line in football that repeatedly stole the opponents' souls on Sundays? Also, when was the last time we have been able to say we had a top 3 offense? Those things quite often go hand in hand -1991 was evidence of that. Until this team gets serious about finding linemen that want to kick the a**es of the guys across from them in the trenches, we might as well not even waste our time and talk about being competitive. Spend your first 3 picks in the draft on the OL - I for one wouldn't complain one bit! Don't overthink this or dare get cute in Round 1. Find me guys that want to put on their hard hats and bring their lunch pails to work from top to bottom in the draft. Put together a no-nonsense draft composed of FOOTBALL players - guys who play the game the way it was designed to be played, and I am confident in saying we will be better off for it.

I agree, absolutely... which is why my wish list in the first round is overwhelmingly topped with a game changing LT. They hypothetical was that a real conversation will need to be had if Marvin Harrison Jr is on the board when we're on the clock... and especially so if the top OTs are gone.

This wasn't an overall wish list, just a reference to what may ultimately happen in the first round in April.
 
It's all going to depend on who the GM is and how aggressive the timeline to 'turn things around' is. I think if there's perhaps unrealistic pressure from Harris to improve the on-the-field product immediately, it could lead to a draft based more on immediate needs vs. the whole 'best player available' strategy. If we see fan attendance at home games plummet the rest of the way, I think that could increase the pressure as well. Even aside from pressure to change the results sooner rather than later, when you set an NFL record for sacks given up, with a young QB who you can't afford not to protect (at least until you've determined if he's your long-term starter or not), that may dictate draft selections as much as the talent of who's available.

Going to be very interesting in 2024 folks.
 
Agree completely Boone, but just as a view of his track record... Harris bought the 76ers in 2011.... this is their trajectory since then

A lot of patience in those first 5 years as they executed their plan and dubbed "trust the process"

I will say, the NFL is different... 5 years is a career, so you can't be that patient, but I do wonder how much of a similar template gets in place.

Get your GM / coaching staff, set out a 3 year plan and stick to it.
 
I see vast differences between the NBA and the NFL. In the NBA you can completely change the directory of a team with often 1 great player and 1 very good player, and that almost always requires being very bad in order to get a very high pick (plus no bad lottery luck). Then making the right draft selection. (Sam Bowie anyone?)

Outside of a QB that turns out to be a HOF level talent, that is not the case in the NFL.

In the NFL, intelligent talent selection, smart resource allocation, and better than average coaching rules the day to a much higher degree. None of which Washington has been able to achieve.

Intelligent talent selection? ❌

Better than average coaching? ❌

I’m a fan of the best player available at a position of immediate need.
 
That gives us a lot of fexibility :)

If this plays out, as far as I am concerned, you wait for the phone to ring. This team needs to be built up from the foundation. We have passed on so many quality OL prospects in the Rivera era. It has got us absolutely nowhere. I personally would like to return to a smash mouth, physical brand of football to a certain extent. I still think that has a place in today's NFL, and in the NFC East in particular. I would like that to be reflected in our draft, and in the philosophy of our new head coach.

I tend to agree, again, i think a real conversation will need to be had.. not that we need to go that route, but the argument can be made.
 
I suspect the o line lesson is not only the Redskins’ story, but also an undersung part of the Pat’s dynasty.

The pats often fielded no name receivers and running backs. Brady got all the attention, but maybe his o line should have to.
 
As long as we don't end up drafting for same/unit position time and again with high picks.

A team that has FOUR players taken with #1 picks on the DL and an offensive line with TWO street free agents starting is an unbalanced roster and one that is not likely to win many games over time.

You have to spread the wealth and ensure that you have at least one impact performer at each level of the offense and defense under the cap and then fill in with solid pickups and younger draft picks in the middle to late rounds.
 
We have to be careful with New York. They aren't going to win any more games IMO now that they have dispatched the second worst team in the NFL in New England (after Arizona).

We are going to have to go 0-6 to stay ahead of them and move up vs. some of the other clubs.

A lot of bad teams this year.
 
I'll take a top five pick as compensation for pain and suffering.
 
I dont usually use Twitter as my gauge, but there is a pretty big push for my question....

If Harrison is there when we're on the clock, do we have to consider it?
