2023 Washington Roster Moves

Yeah, he's a fan favorite, but too much competition at that spot.
 
Rick Snyder wanted the team to keep Patterson as the returner over Kaz Allen. What has happened to Rick?
 
Former first rounder that just never lived up to anything close to his draft position. It’s gotta be bad to not even be able to hold onto an NFL roster spot when drafted that high.

I don't hate that idea except I would be keeping Patterson and cutting Dax Milne while hoping to stash Allen on the practice squad. My receivers would be McClauren, Dotson, Samuel, Brown, Pringle, and Tinsley.

Edit: Just saw Patterson was cut. I have no gripe about it. I just liked the kid's effort and underdog story. I thought he overproduced.
 
Patterson has never returned a punt in either college or the pros. Unless he has been doing so secretly in camp, doing so in September would be madness.

That's fair though he does have some experience as a kickoff returner which might translate. I will say one of the disappointments I had with training camp is that they failed to experiment with the PR position. They basically said Milne or Allen. I would have given a bunch of people shots at least in practice and possibly in games. Pringle, one of the DBs, running backs. I would have given a whole bunch of players and opportunity to see if any shone.

Milne is not a punt returner. He can fair catch. He's never come close to breaking one or doing anything exciting.

Lack of imagination.

We really don't know who they tried though. Only a small portion of practices are open to the public and media. They very easily could've given multiple guys some attempts (I would think it's very likely they did). I'm sure they also look heavily at college experience. Of all the activities that happen in a pro football game, I think the attitude is, returns is no area to take a lot of risks on. That's why, despite not doing anything impressive, Milne has been the guy for so long, because he's shown he can do it without making any catastrophic errors.

I think as fans, we want to see 'break one' potential in kick returners, while the team's primary goal is probably closer to 'don't screw it up' reliability.

30 years old but he can still play. 82 solo tackles and 7 QB hits last season. Would love adding him as insurance/reliever purposes.

Kaz Allen to me is fool's gold. The guy simply didn't show on the field that he has the ability to catch the ball and hold onto it either with receptions or in returning punts/kicks for my liking to make an investment in him.

There are so many players that come out of college with great athleticism or measurables that are just not great football players. Hodges is another example at TE.

I don't know that Jaret Patterson has the 'ups' to produce during the regular season, but if you are going to cut him after he showed he can produce against second and third team players in the NFL and Allen showed failures against that same level of competition, then that makes no sense to me.

My preference would be to go after a veteran returner who we know can catch and hold onto the ball at PR/KR.

I agree about adding a veteran linebacker. Riggo's Rag guys were talking about Washington adding these raw and young undrafted free agents from other clubs, but at LB we have youth, what we don't have is great consistency.

I expect the team to sign 2 or 3 veteran players before it all shakes out.

Tinsley did ball out in the preseason and has definite ability in the open field to make plays.

He won't make it to the practice squad, he will be claimed by someone if he is released.
