I think there are only two corners that are worthy of going in the top half of the draft and Porter Jr. Is not one of them. I see him as a reach at 16. He is primarily a man corner (WJIII anyone?) Here are some notes from NFL scouts:
WEAKNESSES: Grabby with wild limbs and in his attempts to gain phase ... was a flag magnet on film ... upright and tight in coverage, creating awkward, off-balanced transitions ... more likely to batter receivers at the top of routes rather than sink and redirect ... caught leaning and surrenders easy slant completions ... uses his long arms in press, but his hands aren’t very heavy ... not a natural hands-catcher and dropped more interceptions than he finished in 2022 ... inconsistent containing the run and will lose outside leverage ... wild tackling technique because of an inconsistent base ... allows his emotions to get the best of him at times ... was an outside- only cornerback in college ... didn’t lead Penn State in passes defended or interceptions in any of his four seasons on campus.
SUMMARY: A three-year starter at Penn State, Porter was exclusively an outside cornerback in defensive coordinator Manny Diaz’s man-heavy scheme. Although his college production is underwhelming, he didn’t give up a touchdown in 2022 and allowed only nine catches (on 26 targets) for 70 yards in man coverage. With impressive NFL bloodlines, Porter parks himself in front of receivers and smothers them in press to reroute and disrupt receiver timing up and down the field. However, he plays on his heels, loses momentum in his hip-flip and hangs on receivers to slow their routes, collecting 11 coverage penalties (nine pass interference, two defensive holding) in the past two seasons with several others that should have been called. Overall, Porter has clear bust potential with his undisciplined play style and unbalanced change of direction, but he has intriguing matchup potential in the NFL because of his aggressive length and body quickness. He projects as a classic bump-and-run cornerback and won’t be a slam-dunk fit for every scheme.
If the team is set on corner early and there are no offensive lineman still available that they deem worthy at #16, then I would be in favor of trading back.
Love, love, love the Avila selection. Plus he has a lot of experience at center in addition to guard.
A TE in the third would result in me throwing a brick through my television screen. Just sayin’.
