Taylor Heinicke Discussion

I don’t think it’s a matter of arm strength at all. Anymore than hitting power (baseball, golf, etc) has to do with arm strength. It power generation which comes from the lower body. A strong butt, hips, and thighs are key.

I'll take my chances trying to emulate him. I know what you mean though.

The younger Manning is in college. We'll see how he does. I'm rooting for him.

Even Cooper was committed to Ole Miss before his career was cut short due to a spinal issue.
 
So ... yeah.

Three straight games with a BACK-BREAKING interception, due to ... here it comes ... lack of arm strength.

The defense has been playing lights-out, keeping the team in games these past few weeks. Today it just wasn't enough.
 
Doesn't help when the OC calls the constant 7 step drop and long developing plays with an OL that can't hold a block for more than 2 seconds.

Heinicke did nothing to help his cause today, but we also need to address the OC big time. Calling on Robinson all game over Gibson is ridiculous.

That fourth and inches call was unforgivably bad.
 
Heinicke was bad enough, on his own, to lose this game several times over.
Turner was bad enough, on his own, to lose this game several times over.

Heinike wants to play like he's Brett Farve.
Turner likes to call the game as if he has Brett Farve sitting behind the '91 Hogs.
Rivera was having too good a time most of the game. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but all those cutaways to a smiling Rivera annoyed me. The game was never comfortable enough for the coach to be enjoying himself.
 
Yeah - I agree. At least look like you give a shit. Maybe he figures he won’t be coming back but that irked me too.

Yeah. There are ways to scheme wins with QBs with so so arms. Let's be honest, Montana, Brees, and Brady all had average arms (better than Heinicke, but average). Turner needs to break out the quick passing game. Not only would it suit his weak oline, it would fit Heincke better. Turner's still calling plays for Wentz and Wentz couldn't execute those plays.

It's possible the ownership situation freed him up. I think he was enjoying his team, especially his D, winning. However, keep the foot on the gas, coach. Keep the foot on the neck. You start relaxing and enjoying yourself so will your team.
 
Defense did enough to win. Gave the offense multiple short fields and Turner and his O did nothing with them.

Heinicke getting pressure up the middle and balls batted/tipped and not once did Turner think to roll the pocket to get Heinicke on the edge to make it a two way go.

Also,sitting Gibson on the bench instead of using him in the pass game or on runs to the edge is incompetent.
"We want Gibson in space"....Ummm,on the left or right side of the bench Scott?

Complimentary football. The offense couldn't be bothered today.
 
I still think Gibson is in Turner’s doghouse. They probably should have traded him given Turner’s reluctance to use him. Robinson and McKissic could work. Robinson, Gibson, and McKissic hasn’t yet.
Now, I’d rather use Gibson, but if we won’t…
 
Heinicke still runs and improvises better than most QBs. But, he's always put in these positions where he isn't allowed to utilize it.

You don't want him standing in the pocket trying to throw over the OL, but time and time again we see those types of plays called.

Yeah, seems to me that Heinicke should be in some kind of RPO/Read and React offense where almost everything is based on quick decisions and movement.
 
Really don't get why they call plays for him like he was a Marino or a Peyton Manning. If you have an average/below average arm then the seven stop drop is not your friend. If you have a o line that is weak up the middle then the seven step drop is not your friend. If Scott Turner is your OC then the seven step drop is not your friend.

They played ONE read option today... .first time i can remember seeing it with him this season. I dont want the offense heavy on that style, but do it enough to force the defense to care about it and spend time game planning for it. We telegraph our offense and it's an exciting surprise when we see it... we should have enough of it on film that defenses are forced to consider it, not necessarily center their scheme around it.
 
The problem is, Heinicke's not Montana, or Brees, or Tom Brady. Yes - you can overcome some physical limitations, but those guys had ELITE skills in other areas. Heinicke is not elite at anything. He's gutsy and tough and resilient (at times), but that's clearly not enough to consistently make a difference.

The last 3 games is what he is. You'll get some gutsy drives and 'how did he manage that?' plays, but he's not consistently great at anything, sometimes not even good. I love the kid, but he's not it and he never will be.

And not one time did they go up tempo that I'm aware of.

Changing the pace seems to help him. But the OC is more interested in his system than customizing the offense to fit his players.

Didn't really think about that, but this is a big one. I think once they got their 10 point lead and seven point lead they were content to drain the clock. Thought the lead was bigger than it was. It was one mistake away from turning a win into a loss. We made that mistake. Then added several more.
