Taylor Heinicke Discussion

The Chargers-Broncos game led me to some thoughts related to Heinicke.

Herbert's ribs has neutered his ability to strike deep and he is essentially noodle-armed. This shows as they rarely went deep.

On the other hand, mobility is a huge a reason Russ could make plays, as that puts huge stress on a defense and compensates for his lack of vision in the middle of the field. Russ has lost a step and thus the foundation to his success is gone.

I believe that Heinicke's mobility is of more value and can compensate for his noodle arm. He also had hit the intermediates fairly competently and can actually make reads.
 
If Turner adjusts and calls the game based on what Heinicke does best, you are correct.

History doesn't really support this happening though.
 
I have zero faith in Turner doing anything to adjust or help the offense. My guess is Taylor has to come out and throws it 40 times while we only run it 15 times.

Just seems like his style.
 
Coaches not adapting their systems to the talent on hand is perhaps the biggest reason the tenure of the average coach is not very long.

That was shown years ago when Bill Parcells would come into a team like the Jets that was 1-15 and turn them around to 9-7 in one year.

Parcells consistently got the most out of the talent he had. He didn't 'dream' about what his players SHOULD be able to do.

Ditto for Andy Reid. He won with Donovan McNabb who had his limitations, he won with Alex Smith who had his limitations and he has developed and won with Patrick Mahomes, his most complete qb.
 
One thing with Taylor. His intensity and character are enough to get his teammates to play harder for him.

This team had a LOT less talent on offense when Taylor was in there at quarterback in the past and he did more with the adversity of injuries on the OL.

I don't think he leads us to a 10 or 11 win season with this team, but I wager that he beats Tennessee :cool:

When things aren’t going well, the guy not playing is always seen as the solution. There is no doubt Heinicke will play differently than Wentz, but the results are what is important. I hope he can produce better results, but we will find out starting Sunday.
 
It isn't that Heinicke is the long term answer ( I actually think Howell is more talented and likely to get on the field in the future for the team) but it seems apparent from what I have seen so far that Wentz at 29 has 'fatal' flaws as a quarterback he isn't likely to overcome, especially when dealing with a host of offensive line and other injuries the team now has.

So, in part it's situational. Heinicke is mobile and has a quicker release and those qualities go better with a team on its third center and playing a natural tackle at right guard here in 2022.

Wentz's killer turnover throwing into coverage against Tennessee followed up by the 99 yard performance against the Bears are things I think Taylor can better on the field.

Heinicke makes mistakes and can throw picks. But usually his picks are due to his limited arm and attempts to throw receivers open.

Wentz's mistakes are in large measure mental. He just doesn't process the field well and what is in front of him. So, the fact he can throw a ball 70 yards in the air becomes irrelevant when you are talking about consistency and building upon each performance. The essence of his game is inconsistency.

The fact Washington has paid Alex Smith and now Wentz the monies it has just goes to show that over time the qb position has been horribly mismanaged.

Bruce Allen was not a personnel GM and showed it. Ron is showing that he is a football coach, not a Reid or Belichick that can both coach and make personnel decisions.

In that regard Ron is like 80% of the NFL coaches out there right now. They are COACHES. Period.
 
Maybe if the team would have rolled with Taylor this season they could have afforded some better offensive linemen and saved some valuable draft picks.

Rivera was all-in on getting a ‘proven’ qb this year and was going to do so come hell or high water. Year 3, time to show out. Crazy how things work out.

I sincerely hope that Taylor becomes the feel good story of the 2022 season.
 
I suspect it's been said, but we're going to find out just how good TH4's pocket presence, awareness and escapability are in 2022. Last season he functioned behind an OL that pass-protected relatively well, even with the turnstile at center. This year's pass protection is as bad as we've seen around here in several years. I agree with the notion that TH4 is a likely to function better behind this awful line than Wentz given his better wheels and quicker read/release on the short stuff. We might even convert a 3rd down or two. But his moxie and toughness and patience are going to be tested biggly.

My gut is it's likely to look a lot like last year in that he will sustain some drives ... then face the same red zone difficulties we saw last season, when arm strength, the ability to see over/through traffic, etc., become that much more critical.

Well, to be fair to Ron he evidently was in on Garoppolo before the surgery and then was in on the Russell Wilson deal until Seattle chose Denver.

So, he was trying to go after other veteran quarterbacks as well.

Of course that brings up the question of whether Garoppolo or Wilson given his performance in Denver were WORTH the trade compensation he would have parted with.

Russell Wilson doesn't look like the same player at 33 that he did in Seattle a couple of years ago.

$200M contract and all those draft picks for a guy that now seems to have confidence issues.

Imagine if he was here and struggling - what fans and media would say about acquiring an aging, big name quarterback :kungfu:
 
Wentz on IR for four weeks at least so this thread will become interesting...

Garappolo only attacks the middle of the field while Wilson only attacks the outside.
