Official Game Thread - Eagles @ Commanders

At the half, Wentz had half as many completions, as sacks allowed. (three vs six)
And by the 3rd quarter, just one of their receivers, all by himself, had 3 times as much total yards, as our whole offense. (about 180 to 60)
And at that point we actually had negative passing yards

That is actually worse than the first half against the Lions, when Washington had less than 60 yards of total offense. I didn't think that was even possible.

As I was saying, this team can't even compete right now with Wentz as the QB. And we've got several more tough games coming up.

With the OL playing like it is Heinicke may be a better option, because he’s tougher and more mobile and has a better pocket presence. However, if Heinicke goes in and the team continues to call seven-step drop after seven-step drop, it won’t matter. Heinicke will get knocked around like a pinball as well, and his windup for mid-range and longer throws takes about four hours.

if the OC actually adjusts to the horrible OL play and calls more runs and quick passes, sure , give Heine a go. We may win seven games that way.

And it wont get easier against the Dallas defense. That's a killer bunch
It may look worse on offense than anything we've seen.

Well, what I remember was that Wentz had some magical chemistry with Trevon Diggs.

Perfect touchback interceptions.

Heinicke is the better option regardless of how well the OL plays, in my opinion. Wentz takes too many unnecessary sacks, even when the OL plays well. And his accuracy is not nearly as good as Heinicke's, either.

This team might be able to win 7 or 8 games with Heinicke as QB. However, they may not win 3 games if Wentz remains the QB.

If Heinicke had Wentz's arm and height, you might have a Qb.

The chances that Heinicke would somehow lead this team to a winning record are about the same as Joe Theismann making the HOF.

Defense isn't the primary problem, or even close.
It was in Jacksonville. It arguably was in Detroit. Yesterday, I thought the defense played well, but to pretend the defense hasn't been putrid most of the season so far is an odd road to go down.

Nothing like some uniform news on a Sunday night after an embarrassing game.

Can't decide whether Herb Tarlek or Joe Isuzu runs the PR dept.?

Maybe Ron needs to do some more puff interviews on NFL Network in regards to Puerto Rico this week? That should fix things....

Hence, why I said Washington can win 7 or 8 games with Heinicke. No QB in the league can have a winning record with this sorry defense.

The point is that Heinicke is a QB who can actually win a few games.

I don't know what Wentz is, but he's no longer a QB.

Nope. It's obvious to any knowledgeable fan that Wentz is finished as a starting QB in this league. He simply holds onto the ball too long. That has always been his problem, that's why the Eagles and Colts happily got rid of him. And it's why he has more fumbles than any QB over the past several years.

Wentz will be lucky to still be in the NFL next season. He is THAT bad. His confidence is gone and he is completely lost. I actually feel sorry for him.

Forget about winning....we're not even competitive. And we won't be as long as Wentz remains the QB.

Clearly we have differing opinions.

Is Wentz terrible? Maybe..

Is Turner calling winning football games? Nope. No matter who is behind center, a 7 step drop when your O line is getting manhandled is going to create problems, restricting their ability to be effective.

Throwing heinicke out there would get him hurt, because the defense would be able play knowing they won't give up a big play over the top. The play calling yesterday was nothing like it was to start the Jacksonville game. Scott Turner majors in taking what works and changing it.

Wentz may be done, I don't agree but that's fine, but I also don't think we've even seen what this offense can do because we're in our own way.

We could have Brady back there, but if we are calling 7 step drops with an OL that can't block we ain't scoring shit.

We run constant out routes and throw the ball on 3rd and short. Nobody can succeed with that kind of inept play calling.

Us arguing about who could be better behind center is like arguing who's the best runner up in the ugliest woman contest. It don't matter.

We've already seen that when Wentz gets protection and is accurate, our offense is potent. We saw a very good Wentz performance 3 weeks ago - some just refuse to acknowledge anything positive :)

I think Rivera is focused on a lot of things and winning is not always #1. I probably would've put Heinicke in for the 2nd half yesterday, and the way I would've characterized it is 'Carson was under tremendous pressure and we needed to change the dynamic and felt Taylor's mobility gave us a chance to do that'. And I'd have made it clear Wentz is still the starter. Sometimes QBs have a bad day. Stubbornly sticking with one when he is is bound to cost you games.

Do we come back under that scenario? It's possible. Sometimes you need a spark. I suppose one could argue, given that Wentz almost brought them back against the Lions, that you stick with your guy. Pulling him creates drama, might undermine his or his teammates confidence, etc... But again, back to my point - what is the priority? Is it winning the game? If it is, you are open to any change that might get your team going.

One could also wonder if it's about Rivera not being wrong. Pulling Wentz after all of the praise Rivera has heaped on him, might not exactly reflect well on Rivera. I thought it was interesting that, after 4 quarters of getting dominated by the Eagles at home, the only question that got Ron Rivera animated after the game was the one about the Jimmy Garapallo story. Us getting manhandled and embarrassed didn't seem to bother Ron much. But someone intimating he might be less than genuine and honest - now that got him worked up. Maybe a little telling? I wish one of those reporters had pointed THAT out!

You admit they played well yesterday. Isn't that crucial to the conversation ?
It shows improvement. And it shows "what have you done for me lately ?" Which is the most important thing on our minds right now.

Playing putrid "most of the season" only includes 2 games. That is a very small sample size when talking about "most of the season".
And that's the very first 2 games, when every NFL team is still trying to get a feel for things. When a lot of teams start out slow, and then start to gel later.

The offense on the other hand - all 3 games it's been this way. That's the bigger problem.
And that was my point. What I actually said was "defense is not the primary problem" And I stand by that. That doesn't mean it doesn't have issues.
It means "Why is there so much emphasis on the Defense, when it's crystal clear the bigger problem is on offense ?"

The offense has been solid - for exactly 4 of 12 quarters. We have scored nearly all of our points in the 4th quarter since starting fast against the Jags. The defense has also had it's moments. Yesterday's start was actually pretty promising. All 3 Washington units appear capable of playing well - when everything goes their way. But will we ever see a game where all 3 units perform at a professional level? That's what it takes to consistently win games in the NFL.

One comment on your last one LC. And please don't interpret this as some kind of 'excuse' for where we currently are. People are really honed in on this being Rivera's 3rd season. I've pointed it out myself repeatedly. But it's really not in some ways. Season 1, he's dealing with an anointed QB starter who can't actually play the position and who was probably uncoachable. We had more guys on IR that season than I can ever remember and one of the toughest (if not THE toughest) schedules in the NFL. Last season, we lose our new QB starter right out of the gate and have to start a guy off the street. We get hit so hard by COVID that we have to cobble together more guys off the street just to field a team at the most critical juncture of the season.

This is really the first semi-normal season we've had since Rivera got here. I think this season is going to play out looking more like a young team with some pieces and potential and a ton of ups and downs, than season 3 of a real rebuild. That's just my sense of things.

Wentz is always going to have peaks. Apparently, people are clingy to those peaks and not his median or average. He is more inaccurate than not, and holding onto the ball is his fault and indicative of a QB who still thinks that he can get away with it when nearly every other QB in the league knows to get rid of it.

He is better than the Geno Smiths of the world but he is also out of the top 10 as well.

He cannot pick apart a defense. He can exploit blown assignments.

Okay, let's get real here. The defense did NOT play well yesterday.

It gave up 400 yards of offense.
It gave up 24 points - in the 2nd Qtr.
Hurts and Smith both posted solid numbers for a whole game before halftime. When our D was still fresh.
And we didn't even get close to generating a turnover. Again.

If Wentz's numbers yesterday are misleading, the fact that their offense didn't score in 3 of the 4 quarters is also misleading. They didn't have to.

I think the defense *started* well yesterday, they were containing Jalen Hurts, Holcomb played well, and the DBs were making plays, something we've seen very little of so far in 2022. That's as much praise as I am willing to give. Again, we're mad so we're not going to acknowledge it, but not sustaining drives (8 of 12 drives ending in punts) is putting a lot of pressure on a beat up defense. It's not an excuse, but it's a factor and always will be.

A couple interesting bits on the Defense vs Offense subject.
After 3 full quarters of play, only our Defense had scored points. The Defense outscored the Offense at that point.

Also, the Defense shut out Philly, in 3 out of 4 quarters. They only had 1 bad quarter.
While the Offense was the exact inverse. They themselves were shut out in 3 out of 4 quarters. In fact their one and only score was in garbage time.

That's true. As I referenced in the Blind Pig episode this week, Philly has scored almost all of it's points in the 2nd quarter, Washington almost all of it's in the 4th. That literally is how it played out yesterday.

I think someone else made the point though. While the defense was improved at the start of this one, they were on the field all day and our offense was clearly no threat to put up significant points. My sense was that the Eagles could've put up 50 on us if they'd wanted to. They realized we were no threat to come back and they just grinded out the win in the 2nd half.

Actually, the defense was NOT on the field all day. We just think they were because the whole thing debacle was so painful to watch.

Philly only had the ball for 27 minutes. Washington won Time of Possession - for all the good it did.
