Well, if Samuel can't get on the field and stay there - it was absolutely a blown pickup (although not sure how much you can fault the front office since he had scant injury history before arriving in DC). Davis - I don't know how you judge that one yet. We knew he would probably struggle early with a single year of LB experience coming out of Kentucky. The next season or two will tell the tale. I haven't given up hope on either of them - yet.
 
But that’s the point. Davis was overdrafted. He lacked the experience in college to directly project as a starter and at that point in the draft you are looking for guys that can come in and contribute.

I understand the team was short at linebacker and a couple blue chippers like Parsons were taken before Washington’s pick.

But why not sign a veteran or use a #2 or #3 on a developmental player?
 
I get it brother. He was clearly drafted on ‘potential’ not on record of performance. Sometimes those kinds of picks prove to be genius and sometimes not. I’m just saying 1 season one it’s too early to tell which it is. I’m as mystified as anyone as to why they didn’t beef us up at MLB this off-season. I do think they value Holcomb way more than the fanbase but even so…
 
Yeah, never really been a fan of workout warriors. Hopefully, Davis figures it out.
 
I never viewed Davis as a workout warrior. Just as a relatively inexperienced player, drafted too early and expected to play a position that was foreign to him.

Hard to believe that he struggled under those circumstances.
 
Davis is talented enough to shut his critics up if he can learn to play the position at the pro level. He showed flashes last season but needs to do a lot more to justify where he was selected. Rooting for him.

As for the workout warrior thing. It's probably how we define these things.

Davis was a guy who was touted for his physical potential (his speed, size, etc.) All the measurables people point to. Those measurables propelled him up the draft boards despite not having the best production. People figured if they could coach up those measurables he would be a force. I think that's the logic behind every workout warrior pick.
 
Fair enough.

When I think about workout warrior LaRon Landry comes to mind.
 
And maybe Davis would have been more of a force if the coaching staff wasn’t so intent on forcing a square peg into a round hole.

Although possibly heresy, but looking to how Dallas deployed Micah Parsons is an example of elite athleticism AND inspired coaching. Their physical skills are not dissimilar.
 
I think you're right. Seems to me that Davis with his speed I always think of middle linebackers being somewhat more reactive because they are setting the defense and need to think about the whole vs. just their keys.

Probably wrong about that though :)
 
Davis looked really good his 2020 season as a starter at Kentucky, 104 tackles (4 for a loss), 1.5 sacks, 3 INTs…

Yeah, it was known he lacked experience, played in 36 games but only started 11 of them. He was projected as a possible 1st round pick even so by most analysts, some also viewing him as a high 2nd rounder.

They knew it would take time for him to learn and that’s what we are seeing. He was drafted based on his tangibles but also based on his impressive play his last year at Kentucky as a first time starter.

I originally hated the new name. Now I’m like ‘whatever’ but I’ll never use it.

I originally hated the Wentz trade. Now I’m kind of a fan.

I originally hated the Dotson pick @ 16. Now I’m a big fan and excited to see him play in pads.
