The 2022 Quarterback Thread

Websters should change the drama queen picture to Aaron Rodgers.

It would be fitting. I think it currently has a picture of Brett Favre who did the same thing at the end of his career. He can replace him again. What is it with the QBs on Green Bay and their retirement drama?

Not directed at you Win- but the idea...

'It could be argued....' that Washington bringing in Watson would be a 'bad look'...

Ya think?

Jesus. There is ZERO - and I mean absolutely ZERO chance this will happen. It would be an absolute PR nightmare. And then there's the fact that the 15% of Washington fans who actually have a conscience and sense of morality would say '**** this team forever'. This team can ill afford to alienate any more fans. I don't know where these writers come up with this shit. It's an extreme longshot that Watson is even playing football in 2022.

That Rodgers post was weirdly emotional but to be honest, if I'd just ended a relationship with Shailene Woodley, I'd probably be emotional too. I really chalked it up to that, but it did sound a lot like a 'goodbye' post.

I think it would be a huge mistake to spend a bunch of draft capital and/or players to get Rodgers here. 1) I don't think he's particularly open to 'coaching' and he would get coached in DC, 2) I'm not sure how committed to playing football he is, 3) he's old, and 4) even with all that innate talent, there's something about the guy that has prevented him from achieving his potential or letting his teams reach their potential.

I really don't want him because I think he's a big name and that's the only box he really checks.

I hear ya loud and clear on the PR nightmare. But, Wright hasn’t done much correctly to date so not a 100% no imho.

Plus, Rivera has sounded pretty desperate lately in signing a proven vet, even stating he has “plenty of assets”, or something to the effect for a trade.

Edit: It may end up nothing but talk and he’s going to jail so who knows. I’m all about the draft and think that would be the absolute best route to go.

I know it’s rumor season, but I’m glad to hear that.

I think we need to start coming to grips with the idea that this might happen

I dont know why, my gut has been with Wilson for a while but this is starting to creep into the picture.

It will never happen. I get ‘never’ is a dangerous word to use but we all know why it is not a feasible option.

Absolutely I believe it. The only conceivable way this would happen is if it were some kind of twisted 'Dan Snyder eff you flip off all the sexual harassment accusers' move. And I don't believe the other leaders in the org now would stand for it. I think you'd see resignations of the major Front Office staff and possibly even Rivera.

Fans can say all they want 'innocent until proven guilty' but I doubt if you could find anyone in an NFL front office who doesn't believe the voluminous allegations against Watson aren't very likely true.

If you think it's even possible they are true, the tone deafness and utter disrespect it would signify to bring in the current posterchild for NFL misbehavior as the face of your franchise is mind boggling.

And not that anyone beyond a few of you would give a shit, but I would immediately be done forever as a fan of this team. I would like to think that I wouldn't be alone in that.

I have been okay with the idea of swinging for the fences at QB this season, but I will say it again - it needs to be on Rivera's terms, not Snyder's. There is a big difference there.

Swinging for Wilson screams Rivera leading the charge - supposedly a good guy, leader, high character - fits the culture perfectly and would be a great "posterchild" for the rebrand.

Watson - that smells of Snyder, who obviously shouldn't have his nose in football decisions. Watson would be just another indication and reminder that maybe things really haven't changed, and maybe Dan is still really pulling all the strings.

I am already on unstable ground when it comes to this franchise - the rebrand was extremely unsettling and hard to get behind. Watson would be a massive gut punch.

I want to cheer for good people as much as I want to cheer on a winner. I know, innocent until proven guilty, but still...major red flags.

Something else to consider is “if” Watson isn’t suspended, and or serving jail time, what kind of passing rhythm will he have by not playing for over a year?

I could see the team obtaining him for waaaay too much, and see that as a huge mistake on several fronts. Too many assets to give up AND more importantly our shithead owner is accused of inappropriate behavior already as well.

Needless to say it's not my favorite move... I don't think he brings you much more than Heinicke / Allen / Gilbert.

I admit I have not watched Trubisky enough to truly know him, but I don't remember him being considered a 'live arm' which would be about the only thing that can really set him apart from the guys currently on the roster.

Trubisky to me was always a guy who was destined to fail in his first go round in the league with the Bears. To no fault of his own, he was overdrafted, and the success of the Mahomes and Watson was always going to hang over him. Let's face it, he also played in Chicago, a place that may have a worse track record at developing quarterbacks than Washington if you can believe that! Not exactly a recipe for success for a rookie.

I think sitting behind Josh Allen, and seeing him turn into the player he became this season can only be a positive for Trubisky. He was humbled a bit taking a backup role in Buffalo and to me, that can serve him well moving forward. By all accounts, others in Buffalo loved him as well and spoke extremely highly of him - from coaches to players.

Trubisky and a rookie is not as terrible an option for 2022 as some want to believe.

A rookie drafted on day 1 or day 2 of the draft essentially leaves you with a guy in Trubisky who will likely start in 2022, and avoid the need to throw an unpolished rookie to the wolves. Keep in mind, he has been to the playoffs twice, despite having less than a spectacular tenure in Chicago. I do think he would at the least give Washington a fighting chance to be in the playoff hunt in 2022, which I believe should be a realistic and attainable goal for the team.
Beyond that, there doesn't need to be much commitment to him in '23 or beyond. He either plays well and holds onto a job, or you quickly transition to the rookie in '23, in what you would ideally hope would be the year said rookie is ready to take the reigns and transition smoothly without being thrown to the fire.

At the end of the day though, under this concept, you have to hit on the rookie. You can't miss on that draft selection. If Trubisky came in and was found money, all the better - but the rookie QB would have to be a slam dunk and we haven't had a dunk at QB in forever.

Going by this video he’s got a weird delivery motion, pretty decent at scrambling and moving the pocket. Better arm than Heineken but that’s not saying much.

Edit: That’s a damn good scouting report!

Also in regards to Trubisky...

Wasn't there talk that we were potentially looking at bringing him in a year ago at the trade deadline? Or, at the least that we explored the option?

The quarterbacking moves to this point under Rivera have all largely been ones where we have had a degree of familiarity with the guys that have been brought in. Obviously, there were the Carolina connections with Allen and Heinicke. With the Fitzpatrick move, he had connections to Zampese from his days in Cincinnati. Trubisky now just spent a year with Rivera's buddy in McDermott.

If he lands in Washington, I don't think anybody should be shocked.

Many will argue that he doesn't offer much beyond what Heinicke was providing. That could be very well true. However, just a few things to think about as well...

1. 50 career starts compared to Heinicke's 17 I believe.
2. 2 Playoff starts compared to Heinicke's 1.
3. A full season to watch and learn behind one of the league's stronger QBs in Josh Allen.

Does any of this account for anything in considering Trubisky to potentially be an upgrade over Taylor? How much of this, if any of it, matters?

This is the part that has the door slightly ajar toward some level of intrigue. McDermott would 100% benefit from Trubisky getting moved prior to March 17th... but I do wonder if he hasn't reached out to Rivera and said "He's not bad, they didn't use him correctly" or something along those lines.

I still don't think Trubisky is some 'diamond in the rough' that will come in here and lead us to prosperity, but his last deal was 1 year / $2.5M. I guess if you want to take a $3M shot at a reclamation project, there are a lot worse moves to make....

Sounds like there's enough interest in him--with the understanding that probably 75% of what we hear right now is smoke--that he's not going to be cheap.

I haven't seen him play enough to really have a strong opinion of his leadership skills, his pocket sense, ability to read/adjust on the fly, etc. If we do end up signing him, I'll keep my fingers crossed that Rivera & Co. feel he's a good fit.
