I did not watch the game last night. My wife has been ill and we had a long weekend, have felt 'puny' for a few days myself. We got in bed at 7:30 pm and slept all night. I did wake up at 10pm and saw the score.
I think as fans, we should not attach a lot of meaning to getting blown out last night. Mid-season, this team was winning with a combination of effort, inspiration, over-achieving by Taylor Heinicke, and winning on the ground and in TOP. But mass injuries involving key starters across the roster, then being ravaged by COVID, with oh by the way a brutal 3 week schedule - it doomed us to this outcome.
There are points at which, not even Bill Belichick coached teams cannot prevail against. And we reached that point several weeks ago. We can be bummed, infuriated, frustrated, whatever by the fact that it's another losing season, another playoff period we won't participate in, more embarassment. I get that. It's hard being a Washington Football Team fan.
But the game last night doesn't mean a damn thing. It's not a reflection of bad coaching, or players that don't care, or organizational ineptitude, or anything else. It was simply a matter of being up against a very good Dallas team, in their house, and not having the horses, talent, or reserve to compete.
That doesn't mean that yes - we are a resurgent franchise, or that Ron Rivera is the answer, or that we are ready to compete with the best teams in the league consistently. But whether one believes any of those things are true or not, last night's result should have zero bearing on your position.
An ass-kicking, considering the circumstances we have experienced and gone through over the past month, is what we should have expected (or at least considered was possible). I was the only one on this week's Blind Pig who considered a win a possibility, and mostly that was because I didn't want it to be a unanimous 'we lose' prediction.
The result doesn't shock me at all.
And I don't think it means much in the grand scheme of things.
Neither should you.
