BGO Blind Pig/Official Game Thread: Week 16 - WFT at Dallas

When you sit down and think about an upcoming game, you go through all the scenarios in your head. You mostly imagine the Team winning, but you know they are likely to lose. But tonight was a night where I could not have imagined it going this poorly. I can only remember about 3 or 4 games in my lifetime where it went this much worse than I could have imagined. Just an awful game from the start.

Just another of the numerous low points in the Daniel Snyder era.

Team seemed more interested in fighting each other than competing with Dallas.

This has to be a point of change for Rivera, his staff and Front Office. I wonder after the fisticuffs tonight, if Payne gets moved on draft day?
Do they bring in some actual legit LBs to go along with Holcomb and Davis?
Do they draft a QB high or go dumpster diving again?

Season just came to an abrupt halt and it sucks.
If you are in Rivera's shoes, where do you go from here?

I did not watch the game last night. My wife has been ill and we had a long weekend, have felt 'puny' for a few days myself. We got in bed at 7:30 pm and slept all night. I did wake up at 10pm and saw the score.

I think as fans, we should not attach a lot of meaning to getting blown out last night. Mid-season, this team was winning with a combination of effort, inspiration, over-achieving by Taylor Heinicke, and winning on the ground and in TOP. But mass injuries involving key starters across the roster, then being ravaged by COVID, with oh by the way a brutal 3 week schedule - it doomed us to this outcome.

There are points at which, not even Bill Belichick coached teams cannot prevail against. And we reached that point several weeks ago. We can be bummed, infuriated, frustrated, whatever by the fact that it's another losing season, another playoff period we won't participate in, more embarassment. I get that. It's hard being a Washington Football Team fan.

But the game last night doesn't mean a damn thing. It's not a reflection of bad coaching, or players that don't care, or organizational ineptitude, or anything else. It was simply a matter of being up against a very good Dallas team, in their house, and not having the horses, talent, or reserve to compete.

That doesn't mean that yes - we are a resurgent franchise, or that Ron Rivera is the answer, or that we are ready to compete with the best teams in the league consistently. But whether one believes any of those things are true or not, last night's result should have zero bearing on your position.

An ass-kicking, considering the circumstances we have experienced and gone through over the past month, is what we should have expected (or at least considered was possible). I was the only one on this week's Blind Pig who considered a win a possibility, and mostly that was because I didn't want it to be a unanimous 'we lose' prediction.

The result doesn't shock me at all.
And I don't think it means much in the grand scheme of things.

Neither should you.

If Rivera can't fix the horrible coaching and now the fighting amongst teammates, he needs to go.

He was supposed to change the culture here and bring back winning ways. We have done nothing so far but change the name....which has only pissed the fan base off.

So as bad as this franchise has been, do you think Rivera could do that in two years Mike?

They've been run Detroit Lions-level almost 25 years with the worst owner in the NFL over that span.

What is your definition of reasonable as far as a time frame goes for fixing things ?

Our coordinators aren't improving and now our two best D lineman are fighting on the sidelines.

If you are a director and can't control your managers, time limit won't matter. We are regressing and not a single thing has been done to stop the bleeding. How long you're in the position doesn't matter. You have a job to do, and you either do it, or you are asked to move on.

First play of the game and we run a deep route against the best CB in the league at the moment knowing our QB just got off the covid list and already has a questionable arm.

Multiple 3rd and longs yet we never blitz.

It's simple yet unchanged things like that which either need to be changed (since they haven't) or he needs to go.

I think it's hard to fully assess the coaching with all the injuries. It's been great at times and awful at others. Coaching doesn't get a pass, but again, we know personnel makes a big difference.

Somewhat disagree on the culture based on the following:

1. Zero off the field issues.
2. Almost overwhelmingly positive attitudes by players (I'm not concerned about 'the fight' - that's just adrenaline + disappointment showing itself)
3. Generally have rebounded from poor performances.
4. Except for a few exceptions, team has generally fought hard and competed.

I don't think there's any team in the league that has had the challenges this team has had over the past 2 seasons. That's not offered as an excuse, but I think it's fair to mention in terms of context. Nothing that has happened over the past 2 seasons is conducive to on-the-field success.

It's 100% valid to question whether Rivera is the kind of coach to lead the franchise to consistent playoffs and glory. He only had the one great season in Carolina. But as far as moving us forward in a positive direction, I think he's probably the best thing that could have happened to the franchise.

I'm not calling for it at the moment, but the noise for it is there.

If he's good for "culture change" yet not coaching, move him to the front office. I have no issues with Ron as a man.

But, we aren't winning consistently. I can't remember the last time we lost by 42. Our running back is hurt, our QB had his confidence broken last night, and Terry is getting beat up because all he gets is 50/50 balls thrown his way.

Rivera and company get saddled with 20 years of futility. They are accountable for 2 seasons. It's not been great, any idiot can figure that out. But again, things don't happen in a vacuum. We literally have not had a healthy legit starting QB yet. Not once. Not even for one game. Think about what that would mean for any other NFL franchise. You figure, no legit starting QB almost automatically means a less than 50% chance of a win - in any game. And we've faced that every single game for 2 straight seasons.

I don't know how reasonable it really is to expect a team that's had the misfortune we have the past 2 seasons (in rebuilding mode) to win consistently. Is that really a reasonable expectation?

Rivera has won more than he's lost as an NFL head coach. That doesn't make him Vince Lombardi. It also doesn't equate to only being good for culture change.

It's probably easier for someone who didn't watch last night to be kinder though.

Ya know, any time we bring up holding a coach responsible it's the same reasons why not to let them go.

I'm for hiding people accountable for their jobs regardless of time or injury. Shit happens. The niners win without a franchise QB as do many other teams. We are regressing and it's rapid now.

42 points. Would have been even more if not for a garbage time TD. This team has no fight, no pride, and now no leadership. The coordinators are garbage.

If firing the head coach were the key to NFL success, we'd have 20 Super Bowl trophies Mike - not 3.

Didn't watch the game last night, watched Yellowstone....followed the game through twitter and clips posted.

Didn't wake up in a foul mood, felt pretty good because in the lead up to this game, I knew this was coming. If any reasonable fan didn't see this coming, they had on some burgundy glasses that were pretty thick.
Starting LBers gone, team Covid ravaged and then the whole Everette situation(which bothered alot of teammates) ...it just equaled bad loss to me and proved true.

Still doesn't absolve some of Mike's and ST's points about adjustments on both sides of the ball. I think Ron's going to have to look at his OC and DC hard this offseason and figure out what path to go there. Maybe that should be a separate thread.......

If holding on to bad ones did we'd have 0 in the...oh, wait ;)

Still the dumbest thing this team has done football wise in a long time. There is a lot of competition for that title, but this is right up there at the top. Focus on football, not the dumb stuff.

I mean - in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter. But I feel like I should be surprised that someone making that call could be that tone deaf as to how that looks - but then again, even the new regime doesn't seem to exactly have it's fingers on the pulse of fans when it comes to doing dumb tone-deaf things.

That's one area that hasn't improved much.

Dallas did that and backed it up. Our copycat front office did that and saw back to back losses, with the 2nd being an epic beat down. If you do stuff like this, you better back it up. This team did not do that.

I’m with Mike on this coaching staff, they’re just not getting this team prepared to play every Sunday. The defense is constantly out of position, blowing assignments, missing tackles or straight up dumbfounded at times.

The offensive woes can be contributed to Turner’s ineptness. We know he’s physically capable of calling a good game, just not consistently for whatever his reason.

Whether fielding a M.A.S.H. riddled team or not, last night was a disgrace for a supposed NFL level team. I’d like to think Ron is putting the coordinators and position coaches on notice but judging by this season’s fall, it’s hard to find evidence of it.

Sitting at 6-9 a year ago after 15 games, with a chance to win their final game at Philadelphia and squeak into the playoffs, people thought that Ron Rivera was doing a pretty decent job and exceeding expectations in his first year as head coach.

Sitting at 6-9 in 2021 with another two games to go, the narrative has now changed significantly in regards to Rivera.

The reality is this though...

a) The free agency class of '21 has been an utter disaster. Outside of Deandre Carter, and a decent performance from Charles Leno, we aren't seeing significant impacts. The "big three" acquisitions - Fitzpatrick, Samuel, and Jackson - have not provided the necessary return on the investment.

b) The draft class has contributed next to nothing. In some cases (Cosmi and St. Juste) injuries have played a role, and in others guys just have not been able to transition to the pro game quite yet (Davis, Brown, etc). Camaron Cheeseman, a long snapper, has arguably been our most reliable rookie. That's a problem!

c) We have played a significantly tougher schedule in '21 minus the benefit of having solid rookie and free agency contributors. By my count, we have played 7 games against teams currently in the playoffs as of today, and another 3 against teams right there banging on the door to get in.

d) Forget the COVID situation - yet again, injuries have ravaged this organization in '21.

I might be in the minority here, but I think it is a minor miracle that we have even matched last year's record after 15 games in 2021.

If people want to go after Rivera, I would say to criticize Rivera from a talent acquisition standpoint. If anything, that is where we have seen the most errors this year. I think there is nothing wrong with having Rivera the coach on your side though.

Whether we agree or disagree, one thing is for certain - until there is a major upgrade at the most important skill positions on the team, we will continue to spin in the 6-8 win hamster wheel.

Here's a thought in regards to the heavy criticism that Rivera is taking today out there on social media, etc...

Who have we lost to that we should have beaten legitimately beaten in 2021? Denver maybe?

I mean, for the most part, we have taken care of business against the teams that we should have beaten this year. Sadly, there were only a handful of teams in that category on our schedule this year.

It boils down to a talent issue. There is not nearly enough of it here.
