Why Should We Pump The Brakes In 2021?

After yesterdays disappointing performance (defense is starting to come around but we can't score) I figured I'd jump into this thread to take a look at what everyone thought before the season again
 
It just felt like coming into '21, everything would have to break right for this team to take the next step. We assumed Young and Gibson would continue ascending. We assumed the defense would get even better against stronger teams. We assumed Davis would instantly step in and win Rookie of the Year. We assumed Samuel wouldn't follow the path of many of our previous failed FA wide receiver attempts. We thought Fitzpatrick was going to continue finding magic in his old age. Obviously, the worst possible scenario is unfolding and 2-6 is what you have to show for it. Some of it is bad luck, some of it is our team's own doing, some of it is mismanagement. It all mixes together into one big pile of you know what more often than not when you are a bottom feeding franchise.
 
I think losing Fitz is a bigger issue than we initially thought, TH is what he is, he's a backup QB. Turner has not helped the situation with his play calling by any stretch of the imagination. I still stand by my last point in my initial post, Rivera has a reputation that hasn't been earned and is well on his way to keeping his streak of only 3 over .500 seasons alive. The defense has started to look more engaged the past 2 weeks after an atrocious start but how much is that Del Rio maybe turning on the gas and how much is it Rivera.
 
I agree overall on your Fitzpatrick point, SO.

But I’m not sure the performance of the o-line would look nearly as good with him playing.
 
Fitz isn't exactly a statue in the back field but he is 38 years old so I can see that point Chris, then again Taylor seems to be taking drop backs further and further causing some headache from the outside because he's concerned with inside pressure and that might be due to the fact Taylor does not have a cannon for an arm to get rid of the ball on a quick zip pass.
 
I feel pretty comfortable with what I said earlier in this thread.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, about this season has shocked me at all. A complete implosion is always a definite possibility with this team.
 
I didn’t post in this thread before the season so I there is no paper trail, but trust me; I was pumping the brakes before the season like I was a passenger in a car with Toonces the Driving Cat. Without a real QB this team is going to continue to struggle regardless of any other players on the field.

Don’t get me wrong, I agree that our roster is a lot better today than it was several years ago. That amounts to jack squat. I guess you could say that we’re in a good position if/when we get our QB.

We were kidding ourselves to think that Fitzpatrick was going to be anything other than what he’s always been. I know I know…..almost zero sample size in DC, but my opinion stands. After he was out of the picture it would have been the football story of the century if Heinicke turned into a legitimate starter after years of bouncing around and being in and out of the league. It’s not a fair ask.

Find a QB, then we can talk. Until then we’re always going to be an also ran.
 
Didn't post in this thread before the season started. Never thought they'd be world beaters but thought they'd float near .500 all season.

When you look back at the overall performance over the last 20+ years, it always seems like every 5-7 years, they make a token Wildcard appearance and then go straight back to the bottom of the division. It's like there's never a middle ground with this club, regardless of the staff in place.

I stand firmly behind my belief from months ago that the run at the end of last season against weak teams was both exciting and fool’s gold.

I think that both the players and coaches were romanced into believing that the team was better than it really was.
 
I fell victim of buying into the hype. I had a feeling that the defense would show a ranking regression due to the schedule, but I didn't expect it to be THIS bad.

That said, there is still a good amount of football left, and the defense has been playing A LOT better over the last couple weeks as far as the eyeball test is concerned. I know there were some statistical arguments against that, but when you have as many offensive drives get to the RedZone and you come away with 0 points, the onus on the defense gets to be borderline un fair.


To your point Chris, I don't know that the coaches were romanced. The moves they've made this draft and offseason don't scream "make a run." The Fitz move could be argued that way (I've made that argument myself), but it can easily be explained as "needing to have a capable QB on the field." I HOPE that's the case.... that Rivera and company know exactly what they have, and they expected a 'down' year because of that. That the hype around the team is exclusive to the folks that aren't on the payroll.

My opinion is that last years run led both players and coaches (and much of the fan base and the media) to mistakenly feel that last year’s squad was better than it actually was.

Oh i know, what I meant was that we may see a similar elevation in play on the defensive side of the ball that we saw last year.... and development has got to be the priority at this point. It was more a general point that as bad as it's been, we may see a level of improvement over the 2nd half of the season. That there's time to salvage 'hope' going forward regarding the team. It was more a general comment than a direct response to your post.
 
Here's the thing to look out for now:

Let's see if Snyder pushes a QB on Rivera. This offseason would be the time for it. Then when things completely go off the rails in Season Four, in part because Rivera is saddled with a QB he doesn't really want, Snyder fires Rivera and brings in someone else who now has to rebuild with someone else's darling QB for the first couple seasons of his tenure.

Rinse and repeat.

I may be wrong, but I think I've seen this before.
 
I think Rivera would quit first. At least I hope Rivera would quit first.
