Dwayne Haskins - released

"African Americans" why not just say "NFL players" or something along those lines?

I think his comments were bold, introspective, and necessary and could only be made by someone from that racial community.

I admire his bravery.

thats cool and you are welcome to think that. I find his comments cheap and racist. he intentionally left every other group of people who could use the same advice out because he wants to just talk to the people he relates to.

I think the point could have been clearly made without bringing ANY race into it... There is a reason that Johnny Manziel was trending on twitter this morning in relation to Booger, because plenty of the people who were unhappy with Boogers choice of words, were suggesting that Manziel followed an almost identical path.. and he's white. That immaturity is not race specific.

I know this doesn't necessarily need to be said, but I am going to throw it out there.

Lets make sure this conversation stays where it is... taking a look at an analysts words and having a reasonable discussion based on that.

I don't think we're on a path to it going somewhere we don't want to go, I just don't ever want to see it go there.

People get so nervous when racism comes up in any conversation lol

Fair point.

I stand, however, with my opinion. I can do so because this is such a great country. (Or so I’m told.)

absolutely you can. and, absolutely it is.

It's very difficult to interpret tone via text, and when something as volatile as race within a conversation is left to interpretation, it's very easy for things to from 0 - 100 very quickly.

I am well aware of that, but this happens no matter in person or text. Bring up race or racism and watch how uncomfortable people squirm and get defensive. its a major issue in this country and why people can never get anywhere.

I know, and this conversation isn't anywhere near there yet... just don't want it to go there.

and it was a general comment, not directed toward any person

Come on folks. Let's be real.

The NFL is not like any other non-sports business.

How many college athletes playing football make it to the NFL and have any staying power? Few.

Compare that to how many engineering graduates end up working 20 years in their field of choice.

So, the fact a player makes it to the NFL and has a CHANCE at staying power - at establishing his name through PERFORMANCE that leads to commercial opportunities both during his career and afterward - is something that the player has to work 110% to achieve.

To do what Haskins has done and commit say 70% of his time to football and 30% (or more) to outside activities/business-branding, etc. is the ultimate in putting the cart before the horse.

If the player is not a success on the field there is NO lasting brand.

Just ask Johnny Football (aka Manziel). He came into the NFL with a large and visible social media and 'brand' presence from his time in college and today a lot of people would scratch their heads to remember him at all.

Another case is Griffin. RGIII keeps tweeting about how Washington did him wrong and how dysfunctional the team was, but the truth is he does nothing but sit on the bench holding Lamar Jackson's spare jock and holding for PATs. The one game they let him start he lasted a half before being hurt AGAIN and going on IR for the season. In another game he was mopping up for Jackson he threw a pick six on one of his few attempts.

Griffin has only shown us that whatever else was wrong here Gruden and McCloughan were correct that RGIII was never going to develop into a pocket passer because he had poor mechanics and lacked the humility to truly learn the NFL. How's his brand doing now?

That Gatorade commercial is gone. He never got the big payday he was hoping for. His wife divorced him and he's paying alimony and child support and now recently purchased his fiancee a big ole diamond engagement ring.

He will be broke at 35.

No, in the NFL the lack of longevity of the profession mitigates against those players that do not put in 100% to ensure they get that richer second contract to set them up for their post-playing career.

Only a small percentage of those that are SUCCESSFUL end up with post-career acting/advertising/media careers.

But the guys I see out there making Nationwide commercials and being on top NFL telecasts of big games are the Peyton Mannings and Troy Aikmans, players that put the game first and allowed their success to speak for itself on a nationwide platform.

Haskins should have been looking at the example of Russell Wilson or Patrick Mahomes instead of trying to be like DeSean Jackson whose attempt at a media empire seems to be coming up short.

Haskins like RGIII has a father behind him that thinks HE knows how to be successful and how to guide his son and make decisions. Neither one has the experience at this level of a sport to really know what it takes and what the interplay between athletic success and commercial success looks like.

Good luck with your entourage, Dwayne.

Like Josh Rosen you will probably end up on a team's practice squad or as the #3 on a roster trying to rebuild himself to get back on the field down the road.

There’s also the standard we’ve previously set that discourages controversial, political, or religious topics because they have the potential to get ugly. Nothing has changed on that front. I get that increasingly it’s hard to talk about anything without controversial aspects. I just remind myself we are a football board and there are thousands of other joints to argue about those ‘other things’.

That’s not saying there are any problems with your all’s discussion in this thread.

I would say that Haskins probably committed only 8 hours per workday to football, aka the bare minimum, and probably didn't pay attention in class(meetings). Meaning probably he probably spent 30% on football, 70% living like a rich kid.

I actually doubt he will be broke because his family in is the business world. But he will be out of football. He might become a politician in the future tho. Just watch.

Hell it worked out for first round bust Heath Shuler that way

Just for clarification I was talking about RGIII being broke when he is 35.

Former WFT QB Dwayne Haskins went unclaimed today on waivers, per source.

Haskins is now free to sign wherever there’s interest, and there are teams that already have expressed some, per source.
