Only rational reason to start Haskins today was to bury the naysayers on 980 that make excuses for him...including host Reese Waters with another humiliating performance.

You were 100% correct before the game. I said to you yesterday that I'd trust Rivera. Well, this game is 100% on Rivera. Not only in starting Haskins, but also sticking with him until it was too late. There is no way anyone could have done worse than Haskins in the first half. So why do you stick with that? Logan Thomas would have been better. Beyond starting him, why do you wait that long? Heinicke was CLEARLY better. He could make the plays he had to make. And had Sims not dropped that long pass, we may be talking about a win. There were 7 minutes left when he dropped that. Completely different game if he catches that ball. But the overall point is we trusted Rivera knew and clearly he didn't.
Did Gandy Golden even catch a ball today? I know he dropped two.
Cam Simms is a special teamer/ 4 or 5 wr at best.
Don't even know wth has happened to Steve Sims Jr...thought he flashed some last year. Dude's a wreck now.

It's really simple for me. Never, ever pin your hopes on a QB that you fundamentally don't trust when a division title and playoff spot is on the line. I understand that not starting him is a risk. But I will never understand going with a guy that has never won a big game for you, that is seemingly immune to basic coaching, and who has multiple times put himself above the team. I just don't get it.
Haskins deserves a ton of criticism today.
An equal amount of criticism goes to Turner. He basically put the game out of reach when we were down 13-0 by deciding to throw on the subsequent series on every down. It lead to Haskins INT and another seven points, putting us down three scores.
Gibson was our best offensive weapon and Turner wiped him out of the gameplan by halftime with the huge deficit.
If there is one thing he needs to realize, it is that this defense will usually find a way to keep the game manageable. Turner pressed way too hard from a playcalling standpoint, thinking that he can make up a 20 point deficit with a long pass or two.
Utilize the run to extend the game as far as you can before resorting completely to a pass heavy offense.

Very disappointed in the both Simms. Cam had a great opportunity to step up and make some noise with the absence of McLaurin and Steven continues to prove he over achieved last year
I will say this tho.. If you aren't inspiring the play of those around you it doesn't matter what play you call..

Both guys were basically liabilities in a game where we needed them to be strengths. I'm starting to revise my thinking. Outside of McLaurin and Logan (and possibly Harmon when he comes back), we really have zip in terms of serious receiving threats.
Today's game essentially is going to hopefully be one of those hard lessons that teams have to experience to take the next step. Granted, the talent level is not quite there yet, but this group still has a long way to go. We are not a QB away from contending in 2021.
Having talent is one thing. Having talent and executing on the biggest of stages and in the big moments like today are completely different ballgames.

Yeah, I'm mad at Rivera for sticking with Haskins. But I was furious with Turner earlier in the game. To start the game, he goes run, deep pass, short pass. Then on the next possession, it looks like he is getting it. 4 straight runs moving the ball, then a pass play which leads to a fumble. Probably not Haskins fault (the team and coaches would know if he should have called out protection), but still he got away from what was working and it blew up in his face. Next possession, 3 straight runs then 2 incompletions. Then the next possession, the 4th possession, they run play action on 1st down and Haskins hits Thomas for an easy 5 yard game. How do you not start the game with that pass? If you want to pass on the 2nd play of the game, run that play. Get your QB some confidence right off the bat.
Even after that, the Panthers come out and run the ball the entire next possession and get a TD. They just showed you what to do. But what does Turner do? Calls 4 straight passes with the 4th being an awful interception. He then calls 1 run in the 2nd half with Haskins in the game. He called a few with Heinicke, to be fair. Overall, though, I thought it was an awful game plan.

I know most of us would point to the 3 yard reception when we need 5 for the first down as our least favorite Scott Turner play. But it's not mine. My least favorite is calling a play from shotgun when it's it's 3rd and 2 or 4th and 1. Why why why why? In what Universe does it make logical sense to push the ball back another 5 yds on the snap? I just will never understand that. Can we please stop doing that? Pretty please?
we have plenty of 3/4/5 WRs. You could argue that we have the best 2nd tier depth chart WR as anyone... the problem is the drop off from 1 to 2.
It's a gap that can be filled, and there will be options between FA and the draft. Best case scenario, we add 2 WRs. Skill positions that allow McLaurin to play outside AND inside. Force the match up. We don't need 3 WR capable of 1000 yards each... but more 2 more WRs that allow the playbook to be broken open and give the defense fits.
I actually have no problem with the 3 yarder..
My problem is the 3 yard route with an empty set. That allows the LBs to step back instead of forward, letting them get 'deep' and attack up, instead of having to look into the backfield and 'retreat' when the ball is thrown. The empty set does 1 thing and 1 thing only. Tells the defense that we're not running the ball. Even if the intention is minimal, the threat matters. When you telegraph your approach, you minimize what the defense has to contend. How many times did we see Christ Thompson run a draw play on 3rd down for 12 yards? I hated Grudens approach at times, but Turner doesn't even ask the defense to respect an aspect of the game....

This is good stuff. I was thinking about similar ideas as it comes to great play designers and how they get guys open. There is an understanding of not just getting your guys into different areas to get them open, but also to making the defense react a certain way to what you are doing. The best play designers and callers have those plays where they put the defense on their heels and dictate the play to the defense. The ones that are bad or mediocre let the defense dictate to them what they do. The empty set to short throws is a good example. The defense can sit back and drive on the receiver. It seems those plays are done expecting 1 on 1 and the receiver to beat his man and run for yardage. But you give a great example of how defense can key on a certain play in that look and stop it.

Sims really screwed the pooch with that muff.
