Random Commanders Thoughts

Also a pretty good chance a vet receiver will not make the final cut somewhere else.
Someone with enough left in the tank to play well when called upon. But mainly to provide leadership for our group of youngins'.

The only thing that has me seeing the Redskins with a surprise pick or trade is if for some reason the Bengals select Chase Young.

Then the ‘truth ‘ comes out.

With Burrow on the board and 5 teams interested in a trade what does Ron due then?

Does he stand by Dwayne and take the picks or does he take Burrow and then simply say the player he had ranked at #1 unexpectedly became available?

If I may........
What does Ron due? Well, the real question would be, what IS Ron due? He's due to receive offers from multiple teams. Unless you meant...
What does Ron dew? Which would be a choice between Mountain Dew. Or, Diet Mountain Dew. Unless you meant...
What does Ron deux? Which is impossible to know, since we currently don't have a pick in round deux. Unless you meant...
What does Ron do? Then the answer would be, with Chase gone, he trades the pick for a truckload of picks.

I think we get the haul of the century from a team scrambling/desperate to get Burrow. As for whether the Skins would take Burrow - they'd obviously have to consider it. I don't know enough about Burrow to have an opinion on that. Since it seems inconceivable the Redskins would ever have a chance to draft him, I haven't done my homework :)

I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility this could happen though. The Bengals do have options at QB. Folks forget that they traded up to grab Ryan Finley just last year. He's 25. Folks say 'he looked terrible'. That's not true. He has barely played. He started 3 games last year, completed 62.1% of his passes, 2 TDs, 2 INTs but was sacked 11 times. It's possible they have no intention of drafting a QB but want to force a team to trade up to get Burrow, or worst case scenario, take Young.

I actually think of all the crazy things that could happen this draft, this could be the most likely (see my draft surprise thread) :)

I would be curious to know what Burgundy Burner and others familiar with Burrow think about him - is he really a 'sure thing' franchise QB, and would it be impossible for the Redskins to resist taking Burrow if he's there at pick #2?

For the record ... the Bengals aren't passing on Joe Burreaux. He's theirs.

But in Bizarro World ...

If the Bengals take Chase Young, Ron runs to his computer, types in The Redskins select Joe Burrow, QB, LSU, hits Send, and proceeds to dance around his family room as if no one was watching. Before long, his phone starts blowing up with calls from GM's around the league and the fun begins.

If Cincy goes Chase Young, we better be on the phone with Miami before the commissioner gets the Cha-- out of his mouth.

In fact, we should probably be on the phone with Miami while Cincy is on the clock and keep them there until the pick is read.

If it's me, I'm calling Detroit, and talking to them about what their plans are. Trading out of two, then looking at a package to get back up to 3, retaining some of the picks we grabbed. That gives me Isaiah Simmons, and adds draft value... hopefully keeping at least an additional no. 1 and adding a no. 2 in the process.

One thing I find interesting...

Folks go nearly insane at the mere mention of the possibility the Redskins would seek to upgrade over a QB that was drafted just one season ago. Yet, we are 100% convinced the Bengals will do exactly that. I understand that for the Skins, we would be talking about a Tua/Love/Herbert swap vs. swapping Joe Burrow for Ryan Finley. No comparison there. I also understand the Redskins used a 1st rounder on Haskins. But in trading up for Finley, the Bengals used the 2nd pick of the 4th round, plus gave up two 6th round picks to get him. That's a fair amount of draft pick capital to give up for a throw-away QB selection.

In terms of draft value chart - there's no comparison in the value expended for Finley compared to Haskins. But if you consider that many believe Haskins was not a first round talent, perhaps the disparity in these two situations is not as huge as believed.

The Bengals would be looking at drafting a QB for a second straight year (after giving up an early 4th and two 6th rounders just a season ago) with the consensus best player in the draft also available.

I agree with Om that it would be shocking were the Bengals not to draft Burrow. A true franchise QB is almost irresistible, no matter what other dynamics are involved. But stranger things have happened. One final wild card? Even if Cincinnati views Finley as nothing more than a future backup, Cam Newton remains available. If they believe Chase Young is a once-in-a-lifetime player, they do have an affordable alternative to Burrow.

A lot of my narrative is believing (and hoping) that Haskins can be the guy, because most teams picking no 2 in the draft find themselves NEEDING a QB. I don't know nearly enough about Finlay to be able to comment one way or the other. If Finlay gave Cinci what Haskins gave us, do you think they would still be taking Burrow? Picking no. 2 and not NEEDING a QB puts you in a very valuable situation to be able to truly change the dynamic of your team.

If Haskins truly isn't the guy, and Rivera knows that... and Burrow falls... take him. If Rivera believes in any of the guys on the board to that extent, then we need to take a QB and build. If Burrow falls to us, and we take him, i'm not going to be up in arms or go nearly insane, I just don't necessarily think it gives us the best roster for the long term. The best roster long term includes a successful Haskins at QB, with the addition(s) of game changing talent that we can take at the top of the draft.

They haven’t made their selection. I get that’s the rumor and you won’t find anyone predicting otherwise. But it’s not a fact - yet.

Truth is, Finley, so far, has given the Bengals exactly what Haskins has given us. I don’t think he’s close to the athlete but in terms of production they were similar (Haskins just had more playing time).

We should all head over to the main Bengals board and start making the case for passing over Burrow for Finley.

Well - we know there’s about a 99.99% chance they take Burrow. Finley might turn out to be a starter somewhere some day if the Gods deem it so, but he’s not sexy and GMs lie awake nights worrying about getting run out of town on a rail if they fail to pick a supposedly sure fire franchise QB when they had the chance (even though we all know there’s no such thing).

But what else is there to talk about? :)

I know enough to never say never, generally ... but I'ma say it on this one. No way the Bengals pass over Burrow.

And not just because they'd fear the backlash, either, I think Burrow is as close to a sure thing as any QB coming out of college in a long time. Doesn't guarantee success, of course--he could blow out his Achilles on the first day of practice and never be right again, or catch his right arm in a threshing machine accident and have to play lefty, or turn out to be Jeffrey Dahmer or Ryan Leaf between the ears after he gets paid--but as of today, if it were me making the No. 1 overall pick in 2020, and I didn't already have an established Pro Bowl level QB on board, I would take Burrow in a heartbeat.

Maybe we could talk about what a true Franchise QB really means to an NFL team. Heh.

I think if a team offers the Bengals their next 4 or 5 first round picks they’ll spend about 30 seconds mourning their loss before accepting.

There is always a way :)

So I swing by the Bengals Board and half the threads on the first page are Burrow-related. Click on one that's about "so other than Burrow, what else to we need?"

The first reply is pure gold.

All we really need is Burrow.

He will make our receivers better by hitting them in the hands every time.

He will improve our runnning game by forcing opposing defenses to play bot safeties deep.

O-line is not that important because he has a quick release and can escape from any pressure in the pocket.

He will fix our defense because they won't be on the field as much. Even though Burrow will usually be able to score on just one play he will instead orchestrate long, time-consuming drives to keep our defense fresh.

I think I love that guy.

Lol... I saw that too... the Bengals would have fans with torches lighting up their stadium if they passed on Burrow.

There isn’t a sniff of even a thought of them taking someone other than Burrow. But you wonder if their FO has discussed it?

Perhaps. In isolation chambers. With very low voices.

Always remember ... HAL can read lips

If the Bengals select Young, you absolutely trade the pick for a massive haul. I know the temptation is there because Burrow is supposed to be a can't miss franchise QB. Those don't grow on trees. However, picking a top QB does not guarantee success. Patrick Mahomes was picked 10th. He is the only QB drafted in the past 15 drafts taken in the top 10 to win a Super Bowl. Eli Manning was the last QB taken in the top 10 to win a Super Bowl. He of course was drafted first overall, then pouted his way out of San Diego for NY. And even though Eli has two Super Bowl wins and has been better than anyone the Redskins have had during his time in the league, he was pretty much an above average QB most years. He has a below .500 career record. Taking nothing away from the way he played in the playoffs those years, the reason he was able to win those Super Bowls was because of the team built around him. That's true of every QB. You have to have a strong team to win. It's why Aaron Rodgers has only 1 Super Bowl and why Marino has none. Which goes to my point about why you trade that pick. The Redskins have a lot of holes and places to upgrade. They could probably get multiple first round picks and multiple second round picks if Burrow was available. Drafting Burrow means the Redskins still have lots of holes and still have an unknown at QB.

Trust me, I'm not a trade down guy. I think you only trade down if you get a massive offer and you know you can get the guy you want later. My dad is one of those guys who thinks trading down is always the answer. I can't remember a draft where he hasn't said "they need to trade back". He and I disagree on that as a general rule. But I think the amount you could improve your team in that scenario is a lot greater than drafting Burrow. If you moved back to 5, you are guaranteed to get Simmons, Okudah, or Wirfs (There may be some other guy they like better, but using the guys most picked in mock drafts in those spots). Plus you have the other draft picks as well. And if you are smart, you pick up a 1st rounder next year as well. Just my opinion and for the record, I have won at least one of the BGO Fantasy Leagues the past 3 years, so my GM qualities are off the charts, right. :ROFLMAO:

But seriously, if the Bengals wanted to pass on Burrow, they would be fools not to trade out of that spot. For the very reasons I laid out as to why the Redskins should trade out of 2 if Burrow is there. I think the value of a pick for Burrow is so much higher than the pick for Tua or Herbert or even Young. That if you are in that spot and you don't want Burrow (even saying that sounds crazy), you trade out of that spot.

I don't have much of an opinion of Burrow only because of the fact that he won't be a Redskin.

What little I do know...

He has the swagger of Johnny Manziel, but not the destructive personality. His attitude may need a slight adjustment when NFL defenses start coming at him. Good player with good potential. Playing in Cincinnati will hurt his chances at greatness.
