Coronavirus - COVID19

I’m just gonna be nice today and keep my thoughts to myself. But don’t get used to it.
its hard, bro. believe me, if you get ANY of my deleted post notifications you know I know.

My office is closed until the end of April, at least. I feel good because I have seen several people on social media state how fortunate they feel they are for being able to work from home, and I know I helped in that.

this is one of the few times my IT department (or any I have been in) gets to be in the spotlight. It is for a terrible reason, but it has felt nice to be able to ensure people with lower paying jobs that they are not going to be sitting at home not able to provide as normal.

I do not subscribe to everything in this article. But there is more that I do, than don't.
I'm not interested in debating any of it. It just provides an alternate view to the prevailing one.
Use it as you wish.
It's incredibly long, so I've put together a summary of what the writer says....

1. He spends a very long time talking about how the bigger crisis here is the crippling of the worldwide economy.

2. The media and world governments are colluding to induce panic.

3. There's no reason to put any restrictions in place, because this isn't a bad virus and our bodies will build up a natural defense to it.

4. Vitamin C is a magic bullet (his actual words) and will keep you from dying if you get covid-19, because it has supernatural anti-inflammatory powers.

5. The mortality rate is over-inflated due to a lack of testing, but the death toll numbers are reliable. (even though a lot of people who die are also not tested, so this makes no sense.)

6. Declaring war on this virus will lead to : deeper debts, vast amounts of money being wasted and given away to corrupt corporations, the trampling of the Constitution while more rights and freedoms will be taken away, the people suffering, the war being lost.

7. Warm moist air will put an end to the pandemic (there is zero evidence provided, because this claim is false until proven otherwise)

8. The quarantines are an experiment to further agendas.

9. Being told our safety is important is propaganda.

10. Being outside is the best thing for everyone to do during a pandemic.

I won't debate the article either, because it's heavily political and that aspect of it is nearly impossible to avoid in a debate about it. Just highlighting his main points for anyone who was curious and didn't want to sit through it.

One of my best friends since 7th grade has it, now.

He is fine so far, at home by himself...which has to be tough.

I didn't ask for particulars, I know he travels for work, was in Germany about a month ago, but they are not certain that was where he contracted it.

At this point, I'm just making jokes and reminding him of the stupid stuff he did as a kid, like wear those ridiculous Madonna rubber bracelets and 3-4 Swatch Watches on his wrist...hoping to keep his spirits up. Sending text messages every 12 hours or so so he knows he's not alone.

His 2 sons do not have it and seem fine so far, they live with their mother most of the time.

I pray for him, while I had a chance to mend the relationship with my father as an adult, my friend did not. His dad died and the last time he saw him was when he was 6. His life revolves around making sure he is the father to those boys he never had. I can only imagine what is going through his mind right now. There are several of us who will step up, but I pray it never comes to that.

Yep. Anyone who’s ever been on a naval vessel for an extended period knows how close those quarters are (and an aircraft carrier is the best case scenario compared to other ship types). Bad news is you’re talking about thousands of crew members, not hundreds.

You literally can't avoid each other. You walk the same passage ways, sleep in the same berthing, eat in the same galley, shower in the same restrooms. You CANT avoid each other. As soon as I read it and the Captain said "we are going to stay out to prove we can beat it" I knew they were screwed. This isn't about toughness. You can't beat it with your fists or sheer will.

They're now in Guam and hopefully offloading the personnel feeling decent. I lived in Guam for 2 years...they are barely going to be able to handle that down at Naval Station.

Unrelated, but I just wanted to point out to John and the guys that this mobile version of BGO is infinitely better than the previous version. I'm honestly floored by how amazing it is. I can't even express what an improvement this is adequately enough to do it any justice. Bravo, great job.

Thanks bro. Moving to Xenforo was the best decision we've made in a decade. Pro tip... if you hold your phone in Landscape mode, mobile gives you even more options and can almost show you the full site.

So, I've sat here about 7 times now composing a post, only to delete it. Not going for 8..... Be kind
We'll never judge you. But we will chuckle under our breath. Don't feel bad, I've been there. More than once actually, it's frustrating.

The Virginia Department of Health contacted me about an hour ago. My PO tested positive for the virus. I've been told to self-quarantine for 14 days because my PO was just here last week. Not a comforting revelation. But I was already isolating and out of work, so it's not an inconvenience. Just hoping it all works out for the best. My PO is one of the good ones.

To lighten the mood....

It's about mitigating risk. An apt analogy I have seen recently: If somebody gave you 100 skittles, and told you only 3 of them would kill you, are you going to just snack on them and take the chance? Or are you going to just do your best to avoid the skittles?

It's deadly enough, and spreading enough, that it is putting people at a fairly high risk. There is a pretty high kill percentage among the 50+ age group, higher still on 60+. It is new, and because of how China handled things in the beginning, it spread out and is very obviously easily getting through the population. Risk mitigation strategies will try to stop it, or you will have a host of dead on your hands. That's what people want to avoid.

And while it is easier to say "what will be, will be"...it isn't very helpful, and active negligence is often as bad as malfeasance, even if it comes from a different place. Not going to assume intent of anybody, but that is the optics.

There is sense in your post. The inevitable response however: where we have been mislead by the media, power structure, supposed experts is how much social distancing, how much quaranteening, how the classifiers in your response apply to the population at large, the actual math behind the predictive models, the effectiveness of these presriptive edicts in different social contexts, etc. What gets me angry in all of this is how much of this has been politicized. The analysis put out for the population at large has been alarmist, often contradictory and, not infrequently, flat out untruthful. How is it our media/some governors label a potential vaccine as dangerous that another government has approved with stats that demonstrate effectiveness? If it's a confidence interval/margin of error issue, fine. But that's not what they're saying. Our freedoms/rights are being slashed right and left based on some amalgam of evolving knowledge about this disease and ulterior objectives...IMO. We need to act intellegently. We need to be informed truthfully to do that. We need to be sure we don't throw the proverbial baby out wioth the Covid bathwater. I say all this as someone who is likely in a risk group more elevated than most of our BGO community of Skins addicts.

What happens when this eventually passes? There are huge issues to consider IRT the world order, recovery...and accountability.

There are many qualities (for lack of a better term) that factor into a "good life" or what one considers a full life. The whole sweep of history shows that millions have valued some of these qualities more than life itself. I know what these are for me and don't presume to tell you what yours should be. That said, it's inherent that as we trade off these qaulities for one in particular that we treat that as a wake-up call...a call to understand the full context and implications.

As a Naval aviator I experienced the fun of multiple confinements at sea. Understanding the issue - and also its implications for national security - there aren't any stats in the Captain's letter. What we can surmise is that enough crew have tested positive that it warranted an unscheduled port call for an undetermined period of time - which likely means a temporary gap in forward deployed military presence (Yellow Sea? NAS?) and adjustment in deployment schedules across the board. Assumes even more significance with recent warnings to Iran. It would be instructive to know when the ship deployed, how much social distancing ocurred prior to deployment, whether there were other port calls, who has traveled on/off the ship, etc. If I'm a parent with a service person onboard TR, I know I would be asking Navy these sorts of questions.

I wonder if there have been similar outbreaks on subs. That truly is a confined environment.

As of last night, I now know someone who has contracted the virus. I consider this person a friend. He has been in my home, eaten at my table, and drank my beer.

He was treated at the hospital and sent home to self-quarantine from everyone until he has been fever-free for 72 hours.

my wife's best friend and her husband are nurses in NJ. He has had a fever for the past 3 days, but he can't go to the ER. He is just sitting at home isolated waiting for his results to come back.

this is why we are supposed to stay home!

Most construction continues, uninterrupted. At least here in the DMV. Have yet to hear of any significant problems because of it.

Nephew is on a job with as many as 500 different workers, from numerous companies/trades, coming and going. With no directives from the general contractor, or the site supervisor concerning distancing, or improved sanitation. All using the same 2 port-a-potty's.

I realize things could explode there, anytime. But it hasn't happened yet.

While I know there would need to have been strict rules put in place, I do not believe these blanket shutdowns are the best way to go.
In the long run.

I have a question for both of you. Do you know if these people have any other symptoms other than a fever? I’m curious how this virus is affecting people. The news will always give the worst case scenarios because that’s what a best for their ratings. So I want to know from people who have it or in this case personally know people who have it, how it’s affecting them. We have heard some celebrities state that they were extremely tired. Both Doris Burke and Sean Payton said that was their main symptom. Hopefully for your friends it’s the same thing and nothing more. But I did want to find out from people who actually know.

that is all I heard. big fever and not feeling well.
