Bruce Allen Official Statement on Cousins Offer

Om, I think if anyone were interested, they'd be worried about tampering penalties.

But now, if the team puts the word out that we're entertaining offers, we may get some. Of course, if those whispers get out, it's the definitive death nail of any future relationship.

And, for all the talk, there's no guarantee anybody else in the league would be willing to pay the cost of the tag this year. Much less the risk that Greedy Lying Bastard might play one year and then move on.

Seems to me, if there was a team out there interested/willing to make the kind of trade for Kirk that the team, or any of us for that matter, would consider even taking seriously, there would be whispers in the wind about it.

I'm not against the idea of trading Kirk at this point, but I'm holding out for true market value. :)

I think that the teams who might be interested are playing the waiting game. Why trade now for him when you can probably pick him up next year without giving anything up but the cash to sign him. It's another situation where the Skins have no leverage to my eye.

If I was a rebuilding team who was interested in Kirk, I'd spend this year getting ready for him, then see what happens next year. If the Skins can't afford to Franchise tag him then I know I can swoop in. Which I think is exactly the 49er plan.

I doubt he'll get traded,

Ax, I get what you're saying, but these days I think teams fear running afoul of the tampering rules about as much as gov't officials have about getting outted for leaking to the press. :)

Just suggesting that SOME enterprising 'insider' would be floating trade whispers if they were legitimately out there. It's the currency of the realm these days.

Mostly I was trying to make the point that trading Kirk before this season seems like a non-starter to me given it would have to be a mega-deal for us to even consider it ... and any such mega-deal would be something very hard to keep under wraps.

Knight, if there are multiple suitors next season, there's no way to "prepare for him", and wait. That would be pretty dumb for a team to do. Knowing they won't be the only ones after him. to throw away a year getting ready for someone who might not be there is fool hearty, me thinks.

There are fewer who could afford the cost, and risk this season.

Less competition.

It wouldn't have to be a megadeal though. If they consider getting something, rather than nothing, acceptable. And, if they believe, as I do, the Colt can get the job done in the short term.

I also believe tampering isn't a fear now, and someone will approach the team with the idea. if it's gonna happen, it would be best for everybody involved to happen before training camp starts next week.

Wait, that felt good.

Training camp starts next week!!!!!

Therein lies the rub. Which is weird saying, but still. Somewhere in between a mega-deal and a hamsammich is a whole lot of open space ...

If nothing else, we'd have serious fodder around here to fill the next week. :)

It's pretty simple. There are only 3 possible mindsets to have here.

1. Kirk is gone after this season or next (if his performance rates tagging him one final time in 2018). We're going to run with him while we can and will work on drafting/grooming is replacement in the meantime. Pros: You get a very good QBs services for 1-2 more years. Cons: You get a very good QBs services for only 1-2 more years and have to start over at the position. You get nothing for him when he departs.

2. We fully intend and still believe we will work out a LTD in 2018 and this is all gamesmanship - ultimately Skins intend to pay the man. Pros: There are none, unless you somehow inexplicably pull it off at a reasonable price. Cousins will never be cheaper than right now and that's been true for 3 years. Cons: this approach ensures you cannot pull off a LTD at a reasonable price. You get nothing for him when he departs.

3. Kirk has no desire or intention to sign a LTD ever (whether due to $$ or other reasons). The only logical solution is to trade him now to the highest bidder. Pro's: Only approach that nets the team something in return for losing Kirk. Skins can start finding Kirk's replacement now. Con: We immediately downgrade at QB (something that seems inevitable anyway).

In my mind, those are the possible ways to approach the issue. I'm of the 3rd mindset. It feels certain that this isn't going to work out. We are going to take the medicine. Why not take it now? This is the only option that results in us getting resources to improve the team post-Cousins.

Tell the Jets, Browns, Bills, Texans, etc to make their best offer. See what pops. Tell the Shanahan's to double that best offer if they want him. :drummer:

I read an interesting take on this saga. The writer actually commended the Redskins for not overpaying and standing up to a player. We often hear about a player wanting top dollar and standing up to a team. This time is was stalemate between a player wanting top dollar and a team with a set limit.

I am also of the opinion if not going to keep KC long term than get something in return. He has value so capitalize on it while we can. Don't let him walk for nothing.

Probably a Dallas fan.

The team chose to use the franchise tag twice, not Cousins. Rather than negotiate a deal, they've given him the leverage and he's using it. Why would any player sign a deal that is the absolute minimum that he'll get anyway if he doesn't sign it?

Unless he gets hurt.
Or benched for continuing to tickle his pants in the big games.
Or cements many peoples beliefs that he's simply a slightly above average QB, when everything around him his working well. And unable to carry a team. Like the really good ones can/do.

What's most frustrating is the team's negotiating tactic.

You actually have to give the player an incentive to sign long term. If you're promising him something he already has?

How stupid is Bruce?
Bruce: Kurt
KC: Ummm, it's Kirk
Bruce : So Ken, I'll give you a million dollars if you give me a million dollars.
KC: Ummm, so I wind up with a million? Why should I do that?

Ax: You greedy bastard!!!

God: My son, you have made more money now, in two years, than any QB in the league. And you ain't won shit.
Greedy Lying Bastard: I need more.

Ax: Greedy Lying Bastard!

Fixed. :)

Are we going to the Super Bowl in the next 2 years? That's the only rationale for renting a QB like Cousins at a huge cost. For me, it's LTD or trade him asap.

Nope, but he'd be on the roster for another year while the "super star of the future" that we draft next year rides the bench. Better than having Colt McCoy for that season, and it gives us another 2 off-seasons to shore up the rest of the roster.

They had five years to judge the talent they had at the QB position and Jay Gruden had to almost literally beat Bruce Snyder over the head while telling them "Kirk is your Qb here".

How do I even begin to trust that they'll get a capable Qb in the draft?

Our Front Office is absolutely wretched.

I'm amazed Ax. The number one thing most players are after in this league is long term security.

Listen to NFL Radio. Players,GMs on there all the time telling the audience: "Yes, players want money but they value stability more."

So look at the Redskins. Since Snyder took over, they don't really scream "stable".

And that offer Bruce put out there? Laughable.

You're gonna offer the guy what you are already required to pay him. What's the incentive to sign?

Tell me. Straighten me out, clue me in.

That's why I put it in quotes, you must not have sensed the sarcasm.
