As soon as Cousins proved he could play at the NFL level, he wanted to get paid immediately.

Nothing wrong with that from his perspective, but the thought of giving him $23M a year going forward to me is a risk.

Kirk is not an overwhelming athlete or passer. He is a good athlete who for whatever reason refuses to use his mobility to best effect during the season at critical times.

He is the classic case of a guy that was able to work and work to finally reach his true plateau.

But the guy we saw against Green Bay in the playoffs last year and against the Panthers and Giants at the close of 2016 is evidence that his 'best' still does not translate into a top 5-7 position.

Right now, it's an argument whether going forward you would want Wentz or even Prescott instead of Cousins.

You might come to the conclusion you want Cousins. But it's not a slam dunk.

And for $23M a year, if it were me I would want to be able to say 100% I want Kirk over any of those other players.

Good Call Bulldog! Best summary write up on the subject I have read anywhere and dead on the money.

I might add, that Kirk also benefited from seeing up close that money notwithstanding, the Redskins decision makers were not shy about canning RGIII and held the short leash tight. Then cut bait quickly. That's got to be in the back of his mind.
 
Is it the non exclusive tag that gets us two 1sts? That would be the absolute minimum we should accept for Kirk. I freely admit that knowledge of the draft calculator is dependent on you guys. Just ready for it to be our turn abusing another team for picks. Like Hershel walker type benefit.

Sorry. Shamahan had control, and a guaranteed contract. If he allowed the FO to dictate his decisions, that's his fault, alone.

Not buying it, he had a lot o control, but I am convinced he did not want Robert...that was pushed on him. However, I do not think for a second he wanted Wade Phillips to over shadow him in any way.
 
Sounding pretty certain Matt Cavanaugh is going to be elevated to OC. Here's a snapshot of his achievements previously in the OC role (over an 8 year stretch with the Bears and Ravens). Quick glance shows he knows how to implement an effective rushing attack. Passing? Mmmm...maybe not so much. Might be a good fit though given where we have struggled.

That's always the question. Experience is great, but what kind of experience? :chestram2:

Is it the kind of experience where a guy has won championships and had a top 5-10 until consistently, or is it a guy who has years in but more often than not his unit falls in the that 15-20 category of 'league average'?
 
I'm less impressed with Cavanaugh than I am Manusky. I guess knowing Gruden plans to do all the playcalling (reportedly) should minimize some of the concern.
 
Cavanaugh is a journeyman coach. He seemingly has been on every every staff in the NFL at one time or another.

I agree that since Gruden is the brains of the operation on that side of the ball the OC is not going to be a visible, high status position so hiring a guy like Matt that fits well in the background is probably a good call.
 
Sounds like Cavanaugh is official now.
 
Setting aside Twitter hysteria - a reasonable take has to be that Manusky is an upgrade at DC over Barry and Cavanaugh is a signficant downgrade from McVay. If Gruden manages playcalling at a high level, could be an overall sum total improvement.
 
Don't necessarily agree on offense.

The Redskins despite better than average talent on offense never were able to scheme to improve in red zone and short yardage offense to yield more TDs, and that is one of the big reasons this team didn't make the playoffs.

That goes on McVay. So, I don't necessarily crown him with a 'genius' label.

To me as a OC, McVay is one step down from Kyle Shanahan.

Shanahan takes over a talented unit but then gets it to OVERACHIEVE.
 
I hear you - although how independent McVay was allowed to be on offense is an open question. I don't know whether to lay that all on McVay, or if some of it was the result of too many damn cooks in the kitchen, especially in the red zone.
 
I'm liking the Cavanaugh and Manusky promotions. That's what we're supposed to be doing right..homegrown talent? Both these guys already know the systems and players so really no transition to happen.

I'll also bet Cav will work with Callahan on an actual running game and redzone plays that work.

If only we could have re-made Aldrick Robinson's hands so that he was a reliable target :)

What makes Jackson valuable is that he has down the field speed but tracks the ball and catches it with skill as well.

That's why he gets paid $10M a year and guys like Robinson don't.
